Something we've overlooked - rebranding the stadium

I cringed when we renamed the Bramall Lane Stand as the Jessica Ennis Stand, even more so as her support for us was thin at best. Bramall Lane should always remain as Bramall Lane.

Whatever someone else agrees to call it in order to get a few quid in the coffers, it will always, always be Bramall Lane to us.

Derby renamed Pride Park for a bit then went back to it. All Hull fans still call theirs the KC, even though KC became KCOM, then they changed sponsor. Cov fans will always call the Ricoh that because it was it's first name even though it was a sponsor, similar with the McAlpine at Huddersfield.

Valley Parade seems to get a new name every season or two, but nobody calls it that. The Vitality Stadium seems to be one of the only sponsored names on an old ground that people use but that's mostly because nobody cares enough about Bournemouth to call it Dean Court.
I still call Coventry’s the ‘Bruce Rioch Arena’ one of my mates had a Freudian slip years ago and called it ‘The Rioch’ and it’s never left my head.

I think there is a good chance they might not rename it.

Americans are also big on history and tradition, and I’m hopeful they’ll have respect for the 150+ years of rich history at Bramall Lane and treat it as sacrosanct

The US is weird. Places like Soldier Field and Madison Square Garden have covenants over them restricting naming rights, yet I live in Houston and we have the NRG Stadium, Toyota Centre and Minute Maid Park (soon to be Daikin Park).

I feel like the old school venues are protected but anything new is fair game.

Let's just hope they aren't Trump supporters though. The Trump Stadium, or America First Stadium, might be a bit much. Although trumps are very common on matchday 😷

I'm prepared for a stadium rename as long as it generates £100m in revenue 👍

I think that most of the grounds that have been rebranded are 'new' grounds, whereas we still play at the same ground that been called the same name for about 150 years.
I don't mind if it pumps more money into the club as long as it's not terrible like Bolton's or the former name of Dumbarton's, The Cheaper Insurance Direct Stadium.

I thought the Racecourse ground was pretty old too, hence in part the OP.

A reminder that of the many American owners in the football pyramid, very few have changed the name of a stadium. You’re far more likely to see it happen under a British owner, in fact.

What ever they rename it I'll still think of it as Bramall lane or BDTBL, but if it pays the bills then it's OK with me

The stadium is already named after the Bramhall family

Noticed tonight whilst looking at details about Irish nationalist footballer James McLean, that Wrexham have renamed their stadium Stok Racecourse.

Now we have new US owners I trust we will not be subjected to the same, but fear we might be. Has/was any commitment been given on this?

Views.
I'd say it's inevitable at some point in time for it to be sponsored. If it brings in significant sponsorship money that helps to grow the club, I don't see a problem. We'll still call at Bramall Lane.

Most of the time stuff would state "Bramall Lane, known as 'X' for sponsorship reasons".

Twickenham is now known as the Allianz Stadium for 10years at £10m per year.
Atletico Madrid's stadium is also getting £10m per year in sponsorship and is known as the Riyadh Air Metropolitano until 2033.

Whilst we'll never get the amounts of top top clubs, it's still an extra revenue stream.
If someone paid us £3m a season to name our stadium, what's the issue?

They can rename it when they rotate it: Everyone in football will still call in Bramall Lane, at least until were all in the ground and long gone.

*Ignore the McCabe bits.....

That everyone calls Man City's ground the Etihad now and it would only take a few years of a new name being repeated whilst in the Prem for it to start to stick.

So what would people think if it was rebranded say Marvel Stadium at Bramall Lane? Birminghams US owners have done something similar. Marvel sponsor a stadium in Melbourne. Like people have said it’ll be referred to as Bramall Lane or Lane but fans anyway.

The Etihad is probably a bad example as Etihad are linked to the Man City owners.

The Emirates and the AMEX are probably poor examples too as they were named upon opening.

If you look at older stadiums that became sponsored, who calls them by their sponsored names?
Nobody called St James' Park the Sports Direct.
Swansea is still the Liberty, even though it's apparently the Swansea.com Stadium (as i learnt on Tuesday).
Loftus Road is the MATRADE Stadium these days.
Stoke is the Bet365 Stadium, not the Britannia.

Apologies, they would have been better examples.

They can call it what they want, as long as it's where it is it will always be known as Bramall Lane. They've 'renamed' various stands in the ground many times but I really don't know what they are called. Kop, South Stand, Bramall Lane End and John Street Stand are all I will ever call them.
In our house the south stand is called the ‘old new stand’.
