IF this is true someone from the Lane needs to explain what is going on

'The club wanted me out' - James Beattie

By Jamie Furniss Wednesday, 14th January 2009

Ex Sheffield United striker James Beattie has admitted that he left the Blades because the club wanted him to leave because of financial reasons...

The highly paid frontman joined Stoke for £2.5m but the fee will rise another million shortly. The prolific goalscorer netted 22 goals for the red and white wizards last season and was on a streak of form this season where he bagged 12 so far. But he has expressed his desire that he didn't want to leave Bramall Lane.

He said: "Kevin Blackwell and Sam Ellis at Sheffield United were desperate to keep me, but the club wanted me out for financial reasons and nailed their colours to the mast on that one.

"I was down here last Thursday, but it didn't happen last week because there were just a couple of minor things we needed to sort out. I thought I would test the waters and it was clear they wanted me out for financial reasons."

The thing that's interesting is that Beattie himself infers he went to Stoke and then wanted to "test the waters" at the lane?

What does that mean?
Does it mean he wanted improved terms?
Does it mean he said to the club "Stoke want me, do you want me to stay or go?"

Its all conjecture. He's gone, for whatever the reason the Chirman was 'economical with the truth' in his Saturday interview.

What has reall disappointed me is that the chairman thought he could 'be economical with the truth' and that the full picture wouldn't emerge. He has done a tremendous diservice to us as fans and treated us with contempt.
He has done a 'Ratner' on us.

Of course Beattie could also have decided to stir things up a bit, it hardley seems a good tatic to me to bang on about how he was forced out of the Blades, it implies he didnt really want to join Stoke.

I get the impression, as it was Stoke, Beattie would have rather stayed than go there, but as the clubs board thought our financial figures were more important asked him if he'd consider leaving for this reason.

I have drawn the same conclusions but if Beattie wanted to stay so much then he could have offerred to take a pay cut.

I wouldn't expect him to do so and i'm very disappointed to see that he has gone but there is no sense in painting him as the victim here.

Just highlights how incompetent transfers are handled at BDTBL.

Where is this DOF thingy mi jig ?

Unless we pull a rabbit out of the hat then come the end of transfer window McCabe looks like he may have alot of explaining to do.

Bad financial planning in my opinion but as I've explained my opinion elsewhere I won't repeat it here.
