So this is what happened

But he stopped working miracles. In fact this season has been a complete disaster, even before injuries made it impossible to compete.

There were obvious deficiencies in how the team attacked and absolutely nothing changed. We are attempting to attack exactly the same way as previously despite different personnel and the opposition adapting to it. To not do anything other than sign an unproven forward to address that and then shrug and say "the system is fine, the players just need to be better" isn't good enough. Add that to the schoolboy defending from set pieces and what value exactly has been added to on pitch performances this season?

I'm annoyed that this is all being blamed on money not being spent. Surely Wilder holds responsibility for getting the best out of the squad, even in trying circumstances. He's been a bystander this season.

You know I think him going was the wrong thing to do. But his performance hasn't been good for a fair while

One issue that has not been highlighted enough in the last few days (well, not that I've seen) is the widespread deep regression of the form of a number of players since last years lockdown.

Stevens, Lundstram, Norwood, McBurnie and Mousset have all basically collapsed form wise.

Fleck was in the same boat but has rebounded some.

Basham (recently) and Baldock have also dropped off, particularly offensively. Sharp possibly also fits here.

From the players who played a lot last season, that leaves Didzy (similar form but much better end product) and Egan as players who have maintained their form.

Not one player who was a regular last year has improved.

To a certain extent - perhaps to a large extent - that is on the manager and coaching staff.

It's not fair to attribute the success of those same players to Wilder but then say their regression is totally on them. It doesn't work like that.

The players needed to be better but the main job of the manager is to out them in the best position to succeed. I don't believe that was the case with the last 14 months

Reasons to be cheerful, parts 1,2,3

we have had bad luck with injuries and fixture schedules

we have bought badly

we have an unbalanced squad

players form has dropped off a cliff

we have no flexibility of tactics

Rely on ageing players in key positions

the owner does not have deep pockets

the owner despite giving the manager money decides for the sake of the business to withhold funds for further team strengthening until such time as he has more control as he has not been impressed with previous purchases and squad balance

our unique system which relied on high intensity not only got found out but no longer had the players or the fitness to perform

I also think that Wilder was burnt out and could no longer motivate the players

This story was widely circulating in early December:

I don't believe that either Lingard or Davies was "ready to sign".
As soon as he says we got £14m for Brooks it was obvious he's being a bit loose with the facts.

It's stated in the court documents that Brooks fee was £11.5m. I'm sure that Wilder wanted Lingard and Davies - and likely had conversations. No chance Lingard would have chosen us over West Ham in the circumstances.

Really interesting from Sheffield United fans live. This guy is obviously ITK.

Fast forward to 41:09 for a real insight. Apparently Lingard and Ben Davies were ready to sign and had already agreed to come only for the board to pull the plug.

If that's true then im furious.

Surely nobody believes this. Davies went to Liverpool and Lingarrd is on £100,000 a week that's being paid in full by West Ham. There's going to be so much shit flying around in the next few weeks from both sides of the argument. Conspiracy's and half truths from everyone.
Wilder wanted both signings in at the start of January. That was wholly unrealistic given we were the last choice of any player wanting to move. Lingard was prepared to use our interest to see if anyone else wanted him and that worked out with the West Ham move; Davies was never going to accept 6 months on a PL salary before dropping back to where he was before. At least he gets to play against Mané, Firmino and Salah in training now (has he made any appearances for Liverpool?) before he moves to a mid-table PL side in January next year.

£11.5m guaranteed plus rumoured 20% sell on clause.

When footy restarted we got 11 points from 9 games. This season, that same indifferent form would have yielded 44-ish points and probably survival.

Maybe there is some truth in it maybe we had messed him about.
Lingard certainly played like he was showing us what we had missed when we played West Ham.

Didn’t Davies come out as not interested long before Liverpool became a thing?

Questions were asked about Davies, however, we couldn't afford him/out of our budget (delete as you see fit) and ultimately only Loans were going to get sanctioned.

Ive not watched/listened to the OP video but from what's being said I guess you could construe it as "board pulled the plug" or could say that such decisions are discussed prior to making inquiries otherwise what a colossal waste of everyone's time so why even make contact.

Seems pretty much that we've been going downhill since then.

Sticking my neck out, I think losing JOC and Hendo contributed mostly to the collapse. Both crucial to us.
Without a doubt those two had a lot to do with it.
I have read that many who thought our fitness was very poor after football re-started. Although we had a couple of good results after restart other than that we have been generally woeful since then.

Ben Davies said he didn't want a move to Bramall Lane, even before Liverpool went in for him.
Has he played for them yet?

All to do with the drop in salary if Utd were relegated which would have put him on only a bit more than he was on at Preston.

I would imagine that Liverpool are paying him considerably more.

I'll listen later but the fact that these players instead went to WH and Liverpool indicates that the idea that they were done deals to a team rock bottom with no wins at the time is probably not the whole story

Isn’t hindsight a wonderful thing?!
Probably some slight truth in there but also some creative story telling. As others have pointed out. Davies wasn’t interested in coming to us and it was widely circulated that Lingard wasn’t up for a relegation scrap.
Take that video with a big pinch of salt

Honestly the players looked drained from the "restart". It was almost like the amount of fitness work they'd gone through had burned them out, and then they didn't really get any proper time off in the summer - Wonder if some of our long injury list this season is down to fatigue?
