So how were we today?

Ah the olde academy chestnut resurfaces.

You'll not see many academy youngsters coming into the main squad while Blackwell is in charge in my opinion. There is currently a bit of a power struggle going on between Blackie, Reid and Foggy where Blackwell wants total control over the academy.
I would point to the fact that none of the kids were even put on the 7 man bench for games this season even though we couldn't fill it as possibly a hint.

Lenners - for what it's worth I am totally with you on this one. I realise that will mean alot to those involved in this string!

Seeing those 2 in tandem for just a few games last term will live long in the memory. I think Walker has cost us a goal at Coventry (from CB) and sloppy against Newcastle followed by very bad luck. He's created the goal on Saturday with a great ball and won a penalty at Barnsley. Maybe there are others in both categories but he is some player for a 19 year old right back.
No one has said the lad isn't talented however he is making mistakes that are costing us goals. I would also add the "perfect" goal of Cardiff's where he dives in on the halfway line when he had no need to.

P.S. I think saying he created the goal on Saturday is a bit of a stretch.

If you would care to read the post most people like Walker.Check out what we have all said then come back.
Thanks for adding to the list of people who can also see he does make some mistakes.

Boo,
You aren't going to get Len to say he is wrong, everyone can read the posts and see how it has gone.

If you want to keep going all power to your elbow but you may as well try to plat fog he'll just keep moving the goalposts and wriggling about changing this and that.
It's not worth totally killing the thread for, even if it is keeping your entertained on a miserable afternoon. :)

You may be right I haven't had lunch yet, How does platted frog taste?

It was a fabulous ball over the top to Wardy but yes Wardy did brilliantly.

I think what gets me is you seem to suggest that you expect more of a 19 year old kid with such limited experience. That's how I read it - apologies if I have missed something because it has got a bit bogged down to say the least. Of course you haven't said he has no talent - that would be pure madness and obvioulsy you aren't mad.

I'm well aware he makes mistakes but to get any creativity out of a 19 year old right back is a fantastic bonus, and I aint just talking about long diaganol bals pumped into the box which may lead to somat.

I think you're both quite sweet in a tweedle dee, tweedle dum kind of way.
I'm happy to let the facts and the evidence speak for themselves on both Walker and Evans.

I tell you what Boo - you should think about becoming a QC or something like that in the law. The clarity and precision of your arguments are incredible. I mean getting people to agree with you that a 19 year old kid will make the odd mistake on a football field is brilliant, simply brilliant stuff.

:D

Micalijo, all this about Walker came about from another poster slating Ched and comparing him with Walker. The point was made that Walker has been making quite a few errors which are forgotten whereas Ched's every mistake is highlighted. It kind of got blown out of all proportion from there but I would stick by my opinion that if Walker keeps making these mistakes of giving the ball away in our final third by trying to beat his man then Del quite rightly should be brought in to see what he can do. In our current formation and with our current tactics Walker's primary job is to defend, not to skin his winger if he isn't doing the basics and is costing us goal he should be dropped. No one should be undroppable.

>keeps making these mistakes of giving the ball away in our final third by trying to beat his man
as yoda himself would have said.. 'this is where you fail'..

Not following you, he does keep making these mistakes and he needs to cut it out of his game.

Quinnys amazing ability to do the same (only better and more often) isn't really part of the debate we were having.

So tell me then is he ready for 1st team football or not and if the answer is yes which we all believe, then he should also be able to take the pressure and not get sympathy votes. Please explain when does it become unacceptable for him to make mistakes, 20, 21?
Do not assume from this line of questioning that I am against him.
Please don't be like Len and dodge the questions.

Every player makes mistakes Boo. I've seen Messi give the ball away plenty of times, it happens.
But neither Lionel or Walker needs sympathy because their overall contribution to the team is excellent.
There is, however, one player who apparently has all manner of sympathy issues attached to his game. He's a bit older than Walker and has played more games but I can't remember his name.

So his overall contribution is 1 for Coventry that your mate identified
2 for Cardiff and 1 for Newcastle. Hmmm just let me know the scores in those games if he had not made those mistakes?
and please do remind me of the saves he has made and clearances off the line?

You really want to make that the basis of your argument for Walker's contribution to the team?
Have a word with yourself son.

So as well as F Bob being your love child, I am also. I know what i want for
Christmas dad.
Hey Bob turns out you and me are half brothers.

Look forward to your long winded dodge and coaching assessment about his movement with and without the ball, positional sence, communication with and from others, all the positives(which we all agree on) and the negatives too please.

Whatever his minor failings Walker is already a class act and 10 times the player your parochial favourite Geary will ever be.

For avoidance of doubt I'm a Geary fan but, like 'Stretch' before him he hasn't become a world-beater by overcoming a serious injury [well done to both for doing so, however]

I think you're doing Geary a bit of a disservice their Pinchy. He wasn't excellent before his injury, but I thought he was the season before, in the Premiership. Probably our best player over the season.

He was indeed. It would be great if he could get fit again but the length of time out is huge for a professional footballer and he'll have all on to get back to somewhere near his best.

You're obsessed with hardworking players who are crowd favourites being praised!

Character, personality, commitment and a 'chantable' name or popular nickname are no substitutes for real quality I'm afraid.

I did exaggerate a little for effect. Walker is already twice the player Geary will ever be.
N.B. I DO like Geary. He is an excellent squad player and a great lad.

You're right Houso. Too many of you are obsessed with praising hard-working players who aren't good enough!

I can back you up in regards to the bold type. Having spoken to a certain person at the academy it's clear the managers of the 1st team and those at the academy do not see eye to eye. It's also *alleged* that Blackwell has tried to influence the move of some of the development staff out of the club who are very highly thought of (and indeed coveted by premiership academies), only for McCabe to pull the rug.

Does that mean Walker should always play even if he is costing us goals?

I would argue not, as I have posted upteen times, if he doesn't cut this out I think he should be given a spell on the bench and let Del have a run. I've never said Geary is a world beater but no one should be undroppable if they deserve it.
After all isn't that the point of having a squad?

I would assume that we might of been talking to the same person.
I also had similar things confirm by someone on the medical staff down there.
We have some decent young kids down there but Blackie is being a child and won't use any of them because the academy isn't being run how he wants.
We need to remember he only played Naughton because he had no other option and fell lucky.
It doesn't help that he also seems to like having everyone scared to death of him at the academy. The staff down there generally seem to have quite a poor opinion of him.

Without defending his policy on youth players in the slightest....

He'd already started mixing Naughts with the first team squad some time before he had to play him?

My apologies it was Walker not Naughts. Too many Kyles.

So you think Geary has a narrow view and outlook do you?
Who has said that Geary was their favorite?

Was at a football match at Aston yesterday and something like the above view was discussed by a few Blades who knowpeople at the academy.
