The ‘what went wrong’ debate is understandable as is the conclusion that the turning point was Coutts’ injury.
But I suggest that it’s wrong to attribute the change in form from good to indifferent to any single factor.
Coutts’ absence changed the balance and dynamic of the team and, for several weeks, Wilder did not know what his best side was.
Confidence drained as marginal defeats replaced victories and tinkering with last week’s problem made the instability worse.
Factor in other minor injuries, suspensions, dips in the form of individuals as others regained form plus the disturbance of new faces acquired in the JTW and it is clear that the general climate was turbulent over a period of 10 - 12 weeks.
If it was possible to attribute loss of form to one factor most mangers would compensate for it. So the fact that form is lost quickly but regained only slowly suggests that there is more than one factor in play. Coutts injury may have been the most significant single event but I doubt it is the entire cause.
I look forward to Coutts return but I don’t think we’ll necessarily recapture the chemistry so easily.
Never the less it’s been an exceptional season.
