With all this talk about football on Sky I wondered whats happening next year. In January a lot of papers ran the story about Sky going internet. This means you wont need a dish. I did have Sky at one time but had to stop it as half the year I couldn't get a signal due to trees surrounding our house. Since then I've watched the Blades in many ways. IFollow at home and abroad, NowTV and other sources. It makes sense for Sky to go down the internet route as they have to compete with Netflix and Amazon. This is supposed to happen late 18 or early 19. I have heard nowt since January. This might be due to the takeover. Another avertised benefit that I saw a little later was the ability to watch Sky whilst abroad. They said you could only watch abroad for up to a month and then you had to re-activate your box back in the UK or they would suspend the service. This all sounds great to me as I go abroad a lot. My question has anyone heard owt lately?

I was chatting to a Sky Engineer a few weeks back. He told me that if you have the ability to go dishless, i.e Internet of above 30Mbs then you will be encouraged down that route. However, not everybody will have that, so those will be able to keep their dish.

Bare in mind if you go dishless, you might just need to up a data allowance (if you have one) to unlimited, as the constant download of live and recorded programmes will batter your allowance in just a couple of days.

As far as I understand it currently they will keep broadcasting the dish signal for those who have it or you can switch to broadband only coverage if you have high speed broadband but only if you want to.

I don’t know about new installations whether they are going to be broadband only or if they are still offering the dish installation.

At the moment this would cause issues with things like shoutbox on here as the signal through the dish is approximately 1 minute in front of the broadband transmission... Spoilers if you are are watching via internet as those watching via dish would know about goals in advance of those watching via broadband.

I would guess as time goes on all broadcasters are likely to move to internet only broadcast but that may be a decade or more away.

They're heading partly in that direction with Sky Q. All the Mini Boxes aren't connected to the dish anymore. They're on the Sky Hub network and talk to the main box (which is connected to the dish) via Wi-Fi.

Can't see them getting rid of dishes anytime soon. As you say it would case major issues for existing customers.

Apart from the price you pay for Sky Broadband, the product itself is fantastic. In Chesterfield, where we're probably more advanced in technology (probably to make up for the intelligence deficit in the area) the Sky broadband has been brilliant

To answer the question of sky going online, its happening gradually, although I'm surprised Sky Q has to go through a Dish, something which has been a problem for me as the management company for my apartments didn't want to upgrade the LNB on the dish so i couldn't have Sky Q. The Sky Go App is now very powerful as you say, Sky now provides live football online through this app, both in the UK and in the EU.

SKY seems to be behind the curve a bit. In Cyprus i have a full TV package which is provided through a broadband connection, despite the speed being fairly poor compared to the UK. The two metre dishes are a thing of the past and i am able to watch Premier League, Championship and FA Cup football there for much less than I pay for Sky.

I have Sky via BT TV. It"s delivered over broadband (BT). I only get Main Event though. Seems to work fine.
I use my old Sky dish for Freesat.

That as maybe, but if you have a lengthy copper or even ali D side (FTTC only) it"s going to have a detrimental effect compared to FTTP.

The way forward is defo watching tv via fibre broadband, but this wont happen until BT Openreach upgrade all the lines so they go direct into houses rather than via the exchange box.

When I lived in Finland I discovered virtually no one has a sattelite dish anymore, pretty much all tv goes through the internet and is watched via apps on smart tv's. This all works perfectly but only because the infrastructure is already in place for it to happen.

In Cornwall, were supposed to be ahead of the game on broadband and much noise is made about how we’re the fastest connection region in the UK. I have fibre direct to my house with a 200mbs download according to BT and their testing app. All I can say is that my BT tv service freezes, as does amazon prime via usb. We’re now in peak holiday season so packed with tourists presumably all streaming, gaming etc and the contention issue is chronic. Call me a cynical old blade but how the hell are you supposed to really know what speed you’re getting cos at the mo’ my investment in ftp is yielding no discernible difference over copper grrrrr

With internet broadcasting even legally there is a delay behind sky or cable. Until that's sorted it won't catch on. Not to mention if your internet goes down ( rare these days) everything goes down.

I’ve taken out practical insurance against that very thing happening just in case. Got myself a piece of backup kit called a ‘TV Arial’. Just connect it to the telly with coax cable and stick it on the roof and away you go. If the internet goes down or the LNB on the satellite dish shorts out, no problem. It’s the future I tell thi!

Been meaning to phone Sky up for absolutely ages to try and get a better deal on my package. Currently paying £33 for what I think is now called their Variety Bundle (is that all the channels except sports & movies? I have no idea).

Anyway, I wondered if I could add Sky Football on and get some sort of offer so that I wasn't paying too much more, and I've managed to get the full Sports package, in HD, remove the kids channels (which I don't need) and I'm only paying £4 a month extra!

I can also reduce by bill even further by a few quid by upgrading to fibre broadband (although I don't know what that's like in my area so need to investigate).
