Some time in the 80’s I went to Ewood Park on Shred’s coach. There were only around a thousand Blades (maybe less) there and Blackburn stuffed us 6-1.

In the second half somebody started a chant of “we’re so shit it’s unbelievable” that was quickly taken up by more than a few others.

Somebody called Jowitt (he seemed old to me at the time – but wasn’t) quickly walked around the terrace telling everybody to shut up or he’d try and make them.

We needed Jowitt at Scunthorpe.

The first chant was maybe justified, just to let Blackwell know what we thought. By the sixth I was embarrassed to sit there.

Yesterday, the majority of our fans sang the GCB and then sat in silence, particularly after Scunny scored their first goal (against the run of play). For the last 30 minutes all the chanting was negative and aiming at laughing at our own team.

How exactly is that supposed to lift a team playing so poorly and without confidence (for whichever of the hundreds of reasons posted on here)?

The idea of away games (for me) used to be a good day out with like minded folk to tell the home fans just how proud we are to be Blades - whatever was served up on pitches like Ewood Park. That was sorely missing yesterday, just spoilt men whining that the young boys on the pitch weren’t giving them a perfect day out.

Please, stay at home and let Jowitt have your ticket.

Its sad to read your tale. I can understand people being upset and feeling down, but to apparently sing against your own team is inexusable.

Undoubtedly there is a core of supporters who have expectations well beyond those of the capacity of a mid table, established championship teams ability to deliver. There is an urgent need for a sense of realism to invade some sections of the Blades faithfull. We dont have the money to pay the same wages as premiership sides and those recently relegated. We aren't really the most attractive team in the whole world that every player should be desperate to play for. We are just an average side with 'mostly' a group of average players. We have no god given right to beat anyone, especially those some might consider 'inferior' to ourselves.

Of coure we all want to win every game, the team and management included, but so do the opposition. Yesterday is gone, lets move on to Tuesday and hopefully a Blades victory on the sunshine coast of costa del Blackpool.

I agree with many of your sentiments but sometimes the fans have got to let the players know what their feelings are...however I thought yesterday was OTT at times.

It was apparant in the 2nd half yesterday that,as soon as the score went to 2-1, the players appeared shell shocked and unable to work out what to do next. In fairness,up to that point,I didn't think the fans were too bad(you always get the 'know nowts' slagging off Hendo for wearing a red and white shirt but there is always a scapegoat for some fans)

Did the team deserve lifting yesterday? Whilst not agreeing with some of the personal abuse the players got shouldn't the team sometimes lift the fans ?

Something doesn't appear right at the moment and the uncohesiveness of the team seems to highlight this. Some fans appear to sense this also and react abusively(especially after a drink) as they believe that, due to their experience of MOTD and park football, they know best.

What did surprised me yesterday was that,on the way home listening to the KB interview,he stated that Walker turned over an ankle in training on Friday so couldn't risk him at right back ? But we played him right wing where surely a clumsy tackle from the full back could make it worse and put him out for Blackpool and beyond. On top of that,KB is going on about injuries but plays the players he claims are injured. Are they injured or not or is he making excuses for certain players or himself?

Not a striker on the bench ? not one player from the academy or reserves who could go on the bench in case one or both of strikers get injured?(as apparantly they were fully fit yesterday)

Our reserves aren't winning games, the 1st team are struggling to win games, our manager offers to resign at the end of the play off final(no confidence in himself ?)fans are fighting between themselves and the main outlet is to take it out on the players. Reminds me of the end of the Bassett era .If we lose at Blackpool I believe the atmosphere next Saturday will be worse than the Scunny match under Robson.I cant honestly see us going up.The abuse Walker,Taylor,Stewart,Hendo,Evans and Quinn took yesterday will spread to the rest of the players and if they end up being more nervy,we could be dragged into a relegation battle if we aren't careful.

I'm uneasy about the club as a whole at the moment and it it will need some strong leadership from McCabe to see us through. It may need a change in the management team(e.g. when Kendall came in) to give the club new impetus but something needs to happen quickly.

We can blindly support the team, but sometimes frustrations will boil over and McCabe must surely be concerned

Where were the 'Blades Ultras' when they were needed???

I thought they promote themselves as backers of the team....

Probably the 'hard boys'(prob 16 years old max) slagging the staff outside McDonalds, singing about Scunny being a sh*thole every time a fan walked past and accusing every woman they saw of having chlamydia.

Made you so proud to be a Blade(and this was BEFORE the match)

i went yesterday and i definatly dont agree with the chants that were coming from our fans espiecially aimed at players individually, but i must admit i couldnt muster the effort to sing yesterday because as there second went in i just stood there thinking whats gone wrong and was gutted and in total disbelief as i watched killa look like he couldnt give a shit and the other ten players clueless about what to do next then there was blackwell stood leaning against dugout with an expression of well i no i should have signed more players instead of trying to do everything on the cheap but in my pocket i have my paper with the excuses on it. I will be there on tuesday but im sorry im find it hard to try and lift the team when they give nothing back to the fans, which may or may not be there fault seeing as most of our team arte carrying injuries.

I'm with you spadge, I find it hard to sing for the team now, I just can't be bothered at all, if they're going to give me nothing to sing about then why should I?

I haven't been to any away games yet this season and whilst they're playing like this, I won't be wasting my money on going to any in the near future.

you do have to wonder where this expectation has come from. I'd say partly because we've become a very well supported club, partly because of the premiership season, but mainly because of the PR that comes from BDTBL.

As a fan of McCabe, I'd say it's his second biggest mistake (Robson being number 1, clearly). Expectations are raised with talk of Europe in 5 years, quality over quantity, world cup bids. Even cost cutting is called re profiling. We should tell it like it is. We paid out massively for distinct averageness latterly under Warnock and disastrously under Robson. It's time to pay the piper and we're left with signings like Ryan France.

Finally, we should stop talk of ground redevelopment, ditch the silly world cup bid, and concentrate on stadium development AFTER we've delivered on the pitch. BDTBL is more than adequate for where we're at.

Where were the 'Blades Ultras' when they were needed???

That just shows how ignorant you really are.

1. There are no "ultras" at united as YOU call them.

2. I don't know where on the stand you were but the two far left blocks behind the goal who were all standing for the team - where a group of regular away fans who like to stand together and vocally back the team were singing for 75mins and the final 15mins were having a laugh.

At no point did anyone of the younger fans supporting the team shout blackwell out or criticise the team in this area of the stand and the ones shouting abuse at the players were old enough to know better.

I agree with you Alco and I don't understand this excuse of who is injured only to see them in the starting 11.I suppose it is a way to throw of the opposing manager but is Blackwell really that afraid of the opposition. On the other hand is the flu not that bad and players can continue to play through it when it should weaken the for days.
The injury list is extensive but the fans seem to have turned it will be a big ask to pull off a win at Blackpool as they have won their last five at home.
Blackwell needs to lift the team ,it looks like there are leaders in that dressing room Morgan,Little ,Speed that can encourage if Blackwell can't . Harper is another, saluting the travelling fans that took guts if all you have received all match is negative abuse.

1. Not sure where you've been GC88, but there IS a group of "Blades Ultras" Its been debated on here over the last couple of months. I didn't label them Ultras, they did this themselves. I believe they even have their own Facebook page. Maybe it shows how ignorant you are :D

2. I'm responding to a post, I wasn't at the game, but people supporting them previously said what their purpose was. If people are saying we're not getting behind the team, then I thought I better ask a reasonable question to know where they were at Scunny

Thanks anyway

You're ignorant swissblade

I was part of the group and never called ourselves ultras - and the facebook page never mentions ultras and all we want to do is support united and sing at matches which we did yesterday. It was other idiots who used it to take the ****.

The most of the people singing and supporting yesterday were part of this group who are determined to improve uniteds support of the players rather than shouting abuse at Henderson in the warm up.

Also none of the people went to mcdonalds and all were in the harvester or whatever it was called near the ground - the chavs at the mcdonalds were clearly an embarassment to our support.

You're ignorant swissblade

Ha ha well i've been called worse, but i'm glad you've clarified it. Perhaps it was clarified after I stopped reading that post titled Blades Ultra's.

I'll make sure I don't make the same mistake again and you're not claiming to be Ultras.

Oh and just to point out, my original post asked where these fans were at Scunny, but again you clarified this.

Keep up the support, the club needs support at the moment and i'm glad to hear that there were at least a few backing the players!

Isnt it amazing how people see things differently.

Blades are blades are blades......... nothing has changed over the 40 years ive been watching them. I also was at that Blackburn match - went in the car - one of the few times i didnt go on Shreds coach in those days.

Blades fans have always had a giggle, taken the piss out of ourselves and the team \ club. Its called terrace humour.

I was standing towards the left hand side of the goal yesterday and all i heard\sang was songs in support of the blades, then in the 2nd half when we were getting embarrassingly hammered the 'terrace humour' kicked in with "lets pretend we've scored a goal"..... followed by manic cheering.

Nothing has changed over the years.....apart from our expectations, which it has to be said, have been built up by the club hierarchy. I'm a massive McCabe fan, but he really must take a step back and evaluate where we are ON THE PITCH because there is only one way we are going......BACKWARDS!

Spot on! McCabe has been a real gem for us so I hope he doesn't get too much stick but I do feel there's far too much focus on what the ground will be suitable for in 34 years time, or how many non-productive foreign D league clubs we might have an interest in come the turn of the century.

How many times have we been told that the core focus should remain on the pitch at BDTBL? Doesn't really seem like that at the moment.

Respect to you Swissblade.

If anyone tries criticising the players during the game we make sure we try to sing over them as the people shouting abuse at Henderson during the warmup and having a go at ched and Blackwell were out of order yesterday on the side stand.

We were all to the left behind the goal and tried our best to support the team for 90mins but had a laugh chanting eagles, we are super league, let's pretend we scored a goal/try for the last part.

Uniteds support is split now and is leading to disagreements in the ground and could end up in fights - it feels like when robson was on his way out in the fanbase being so disunited.

This is the exact problem I have with United at the minute....too much focus off the pitch and not enough on it.

This summers big "talk" was "Quality not Quantity" and I dont think we've made 1 quality permanent signing.

To be honest, we were sat deep into Scunny territory on the East Stand and we hardly heard a peep from the United fans... booing, singing or anything.
