Simon Moore - Time to move on?

Moore was what we needed at the time, George Long had started to stand between the penalty spot and the edge of the 18 yard box when we playing towards Bramall Lane if I remember correctly, he must have been getting 'Dogs' from the first few rows on the Kop..

As far as the thread goes, I'm in the camp that thinks you need a real third choice keeper in the Prem. Whether it's cup rotations or injuries and suspensions, games are so vital that you can't get by in a pinch the way you can at lower levels. Moore is as good a third choice keeper as we're going to get right now given Verrips is still an unknown quantity. If the coaching staff reckon Verrips is up to it then, sure, let one of them go.

Training for work they never do : like a firefighter at a UK airport ?
Still wouldn’t be without them though !

My opinion was that Moore was an excellent shot stopper with good reflexes but not the greatest at dealing with crosses or coming off his line. We often seemed vulnerable defending corners or crosses punted into the area.

Where Blackman was unit, it seemed like he didn’t even need to jump when catching a cross. As long as the defence did their job defending outside the box then he gave us a different dimension. Blackman seemed slow and laid back but at the time his calmness suited us.

Good analogy, pilots also train for situations which only come into practice when emergencies occur.
Blades have a history of 'keepers who hovered in the background playing a hand full of games, 'Daz' Thompson and Widdowson come to mind,

Spend their days frying bacon and jogging round the carpark. Don't even get to save cats from trees. Good lads though.
 
Simon Moore and his Mrs have no desire to leave Sheffield, they love it here. 15 minutes drive, in one direction, and you are in the middle of a big city, 15 minutes drive the other way and you are in the Peak District National Park (as we all know) they love that. Simon was part of our journey with CW and AK, and seems to be a really popular member of the squad with the other lads, him and his Mrs were often out with Mr and Mrs Fleck and Mr and Mrs Coutts and now he is close mates with Billy.

Teams need back up players, and sometimes you have to swallow your pride and realise that this is your role in the team. If you were lucky enough to play football for a living, and ended up at a team/club that you love, playing for arguably the best manager in the country, great coaching staff and backroom staff, with a brilliant bunch of lads that all got along like a gang of mates, you drove to work everyday with a smile on your face and you came home every night to a happy Mrs who liked the city so much that she was happy to support your decision to stay. Some people would count their blessings and not rock the boat.

Only two people will be deciding Simon Moore's future; Simon Moore and Chris Wilder.
 
I can imagine such as Sharp & Moore who have been on the journey from League 1 would also be a benefit behind the scenes in helping newcomers to acclimatise. They know the club inside out & can instil the ethos into the next generation. I think this could be important to help keep in check the larger egos that tend to come with the higher quality players that we will require to continue our progress.
 
Maybe he will join the goal keeping coaching staff while studying for a his coaching badges ? seems a really good lad and popular at the club, My view is CW sees him as an asset, same as Billy and is happy to keep him, nobody really knows what happens and gets discussed behind the scenes.

Only problem with Blackman was that anything below waist height that wasn’t straight at him was in serious danger of going in the back of the net. He just didn’t get down quick enough.
 
Rotherham would be a perfect place for Moore next season to be fair.

Agree...his shot stopping wasn’t as good as Moore...he was that big his actions looked slow but our defense was so good not many teams had that many shots.

Moore was more light weight and didn’t seem to like busy penalty boxes when defending corners
where as with Blackman in goal I’ve never felt as calm defending corners and opposition crosses into our box become ineffective.

Every keeper has strengths and weaknesses....but Blackman calmness, height/ size was good for us....at the time,
It often made me laugh when defending corners or crosses he seemed so tall he often didn’t need to jump.

Good post...when you put it like that...it’s a no brainer for Moore to stay.
Also as you’ve mentioned Wilder seems to be really keen on having good personalities/ good trusted role models/ leaders in and around the club.
Having the right culture within a club might well be one of the secrets to Wilders success.
 
Whilst we have too many keepers, and need to sell/loan at least two of them, I'm fed up with seeing all the negative comments about Simon Moore. His arrival in League One was one of the most important signings we made and helped galvanise our season. George Long wasn't vocal enough IMO. He has been overlooked since that promotion, but epitomises what being a squad player is all about. There's lots of mentions about the goal we conceded at OT and having seen this numerous times, I can't say it's definitely his fault. I'll always remember that save against Wednesday when he'd hurt his back then sprung up from his haunches and fingertipped one over. If he leaves us, so be it, but I'll always remember his importance and contribution and he can leave with our blessing. Enough of the negativity about him, he doesn't deserve that.

Negativity comments? I think the vast majority of the comments have been just an objective assessment of him as a goalkeeper. He is in the last year of his contract and is our 3rd or even, arguably, 4th choice keeper now. He is clearly not PL standard so my point is should we look to move him on and recoup a bit of money, or at least save a wage, while he is still under contract. FWIW I loved Couttsy, but he was clearly not at the level required for the PL so was moved on before last season.

Any player who leaves and has made a contribution - and, as you say, Moore did make a contribution, particularly in the L1 season - will go with my blessing.

Moore did a good job for us where we were at the time. I also recall his brilliant last minute save at BL to prevent a last minute winner for the pigs.

Speaking as some have of Blackman, I remember the incident when he caught a ball when under challenge and then just held it high over the forward's head who thought the piss was being taken out of him, which it was, but it led to an incident where both got booked.

Was that away at Brentford when they both got sent off ?
 



There's a balance to strike between how badly you want to play vs lifestyle and having money in the bank. If he's in the last year of his contract he might as well take the money and get a gig in the Championship/League One next year. He's potentially got another 10 years left in him and a move to Donny/Rotherham/Barnsley/Huddersfield is probably about his level, doesn't have to move either and still earns a decent wage.

Lets face it, unless we have some sort of goalkeeping catastrophe, he's highly unlikely to get a game. Maybe even a loan move now could work with a view to him joining whoever it might be permanently at the end of the season because we'd be unlikely to get any sort of significant fee for him now.
