For those with long memories, the last time we were in a promotion scrap with Leeds was 1989/90.
And to be honest with you, the run in that season has remarkable similarities...
21.03.1990 West Ham United away L0-5
24.03.1990 Barnsley home L1-2
28.03.1990 Oldham Athletic away W2-0
31.03.1990 Stoke City away W1-0
03.04.1990 Sunderland home L1-3
07.04.1990 Portsmouth away L2-3
10.04.1990 Watford home W4-1
14.04.1990 Oxford United home W2-1
16.04.1990 Leeds United away L0-4
21.04.1990 Port Vale home W2-1
28.04.1990 Bournemouth home W4-2
01.05.1990 Blackburn Rovers away D0-0
05.05.1990 Leicester City away W5-2
If you look at March and April, we drop 15 points, and get our arses whipped at Upton Park, and of course,at Elland Road (exaclty 30yrs ago tomorrow), where after being in the top 2 almost all season, we drop down to 3rd. If this site had been about at that time, we would have been slitting our wrists and chucking ourselves off Norfolk Park flats based on that form.
But we still believed we could do it, and as it was, we did. The only reason the Dirties won the championship was because they scored 1 poxy goal more than we did.
So - summon the spirit of 1990 - and in the words of Yazz (the tune that resonated around the Lane in that season), the only way is up....
PS In that team that season - a certain Mr Christopher John Wilder esquire.
