The scene: United are away at Spurs in November. The right back bursts into the corner of the area and whips in a cross. The ball goes through a group of players and nestles in at the far post. After some confusion, the goal is awarded to the right back, George Baldock.

They would have been mostly made up of Brian Deane (home versus Bury and Bristol Rovers, 1988) and Brian Gayle (both away versus Manchester City, 1992).

Any others?

Glyn Hodges's lob over Schmeichel, FA Cup 5th round 1993.

Paul Beesley's lob over Averøykameratene's goalkeeper, pre season friendly 1995.

Michael O'Halloran's penalty in the 2012 play off final shootout was fairly similar to Lyle Taylor's penalty in the JPT shootout at Scunthorpe in 2013.

I tell you what, Paul Beesley will be over the moon that you've brought that up and compared those moments. Could you tell me which one was better?

Jag's goals against Leeds and Middlesbrough were similar from memory albeit opposite ends of the ground

Michael Brown's spectacular volley into the top corner

Which goal am I talking about. Our 2nd vs Wednesday in the 3-1 win? Or the third goal (his 2nd of the game) vs Ipswich in a 4-3 FA cup win a week or so earlier?

I think he scored one against Birmingham the previous year that was pretty similar. As I recall we won 4-0, Pesch getting two against the team his wife worked for.

GOAL - v Arsenal (h) 4.9.73. In the ninth minute Currie insolently beat Storey but was brought down on the edge of the penalty area. Looking up, United's superstar slipped his free kick back for Woodward to whip his right foot shot along the ground, through the packed defence and into the corner of the net.

GOAL - v West Ham (a) 10.11.73. Woodward's second was a terrific volley from some twenty yards that might have gone anywhere. It was hardly seen until it flashed into the net. He met a Currie corner a foot above ground and crashed it home.

GOAL - v Southampton (h) 22.12.73. Badger pestered Mills into conceding a corner and from the kick came one of the most remarkable goals seen at the Lane this season. Currie took it pulled it right back to Woodward, five yards outside the penalty area, and the winger hit another scorching shot which appeared to brush someone on the way in, but it was clearly Woodward's goal and the completion of a splendid hat-trick.

Quite hard to be honest, I only saw Beesley's lob as it happened, while I must have seen Hodges' lob more than a hundred times.

The way I remember the friendly we were leading 1-0 and looked quite comfortable, probably didn't want to do more than we had to. Averøykameratene then equalised late in the second half which immediately made us really go for the win, throwing everything forward. It was like the players realised they were about to miss out on a huge win bonus. Just at the end the ball dropped to Beesley in the box and he lobbed the goalkeeper which made me think of Hodges' lob straight away.

Couple of other random memeries from that match..

* Dave Bassett looked to have a decent touch as he exchanged some passes with Dane Whitehouse at half time.

* The home side had a right winger called Erik Sivertsen who was absolutely lightening. The home crowd laughed as he outpaced Roger Nilsen in a chase for the ball. I got the feeling it was something they saw him do to anyone. A few weeks later I read that he was invited to Sheffield for a trial.

* After the game the hosts were preparing barbecue food for United's players and staff, which certainly interested Jostein Flo, walking straight from the pitch towards the lovely smell and wanted his team mates to come along.

JF: "Beez, come, they have grill food up here!"
PB: "Josh, have a shower first!"
JF: "Okay. I need food!"

* Lots of kids wanted the United players' autographs after the game. Some of the youngest thought I was also a Blades player as I was wearing a United shirt and stood outside the dressing rooms. As they handed me their notebooks/papers I tried to explain that I wasn't a player, but then they looked really, really disappointed, so in the end I just signed a couple of them, then drifted away from that area.

* Before the game I was handing out some leaflets from the Scandinavian Supporters Club, as a german kid (surely a tourist) approached me, struggling to ask me something in English. As I had learned some german at school I suggested he tried asking his question in german:

BB: Bitte, versuchen sie deutsch zu sprechen!
German kid: (very relieved) Ach, sie sprechen deutsch!!!
BB: Ja, ein bischen!
GK: aøklsjdø fljas dølkfj aølsdkjf ølkasjd øflkj asødkljf øbklasdjfølkj asdølkj føklj sadøklf jøklas jdølkfj ølksød iouewpoiruj poewijuriopew uiopujrpoiaweu iorjskdjføjxcm,.vm czxn xn akdjsøla jdølj øalsdjoiejwpoiruj ejd flkjd sfj lsdj kfjsdlfji
BB: Err, I think we need to try this in English after all...

After some more awkwardness I think what he wanted to know was which position in the table Sheffield United were. I told him the season hadn't started yet, and he seemed to understand that.

That Currie goal was the first goal I ever saw United score - not a bad one to start on.

The Jags goal; sometimes I think it might just be my favourite goal ever. As clean strikes go, you're not going to see many as pin-sharp as that one, although Michael Brown certainly had a decent go at it later the same season.
