This image of two footballers has been reused countless times across different publications and football programmes printed either black and white or the players coloured in numerous kits.
Tony Candland has a possible lead that the original artwork is based on a photograph of David Munks and George Ley from a match between The Blades and Pompey that featured in Charles Buchan's Football Monthly.
I've done some research and found that:
Munks played for SUFC '65 - '69, then PFC '69 - '73. Ley never played for SUFC, but played for PFC '67 - '69. If the image is Munks and Ley, SUFC v PFC, there are only 2 matches the image could have come from, either 02/11/68 (at Fratton Park) or 11/01/69 (at Bramall Lane).
So does anyone have a copy of Charles Buchan's Football Monthly featuring said photo, or any other info about the origins of the image.
