So, the ref prepared Shelvey that he was going to allow play to carry on, before the incident occurred? Interesting! I'm assuming he made that instruction clear to all the players at the time?

Wasn't referee Stuart Atwell, also involved in the VAR decisions at Spurs a few weeks ago?

If one wasn't fair-minded about this, one could start to believe that Mr Atwell has it in for us!

I thought that sounded ridiculous to be honest. Why were none of our team told of this? More to the point, surely by definition, if you are offside you are clean through on goal. Unless atwell has discovered a new branch of geometry then you cannot be past the last defender yet not have a clear sight of goal.

Atwell was the VAR ref on Sunday at Wolves. Looked twice for penalties when firstly nobody appealed and secondly the ref had long since blown the whistle. He also checked on a possible red card for John Fleck for a great tackle right in front of us

Hey lads, the referee briefed each captain as a matter of routine.

VAR guidance changes regularly and it's hard for everybody to keep apace with it.

Bit surprised Shelvey was listening to be honest.

Depressing isn't it, that wankers like this are refs.

This, this is exactly what is wrong with it. They’ve made a total, complete mess of it at the start of the season and then continued to fuck about with it to the point that now no one knows what the fuck to do.

Even the officials don’t know what to do so what chance has anyone else got?

What I dont get is, why are we playing a different/lesser version of VAR to the rest of the world? Surely the differences we be a detriment for PL teams once we get a final set of rules, which will still be lesser.

So the ref tells Shelvey he can play on, he scores yet doesn't celebrate, knowing he's scored a perfectly good goal.

You can take the boy out of Liverpool...…...
He’s from Harold Hill, Romford and he did celebrate. He just didn’t make a big thing of it as he knew it was a bit fortunate rather than a bit of great skill. And I guess in the back of his mind he wasn’t 100% he was on and didn’t want to look a tit if it was subsequently ruled out

From where I was sat, he looked sheepish as if he was expecting a booking, BB...….

Like pretty much the rest of us in the ground were I guess.

Watch the replay when he’s pointing to his alien head.

But he didn't actually give Wolves a penalty or send off Fleck? 🤔

But why even check for the penalty? It sets a precedent that the refs whistle means nothing.

Because that's what they do with VAR, I don't get how there is an issue just checking something.

So the VAR checks it and decides it's a penalty. A penalty awarded 10 seconds after the whistle went and the ball was dead because a striker didn't play to the whistle and continued on regardless.

So now I'm confused. Are we playing to the whistle or not?

If a penalty can be awarded after the whistle for another infringement you're going to get a lot of strikers ignoring that whistle and chancing their arm.

Does the keeper challenge this striker and risk giving away a penalty or stand aside and hope VAR doesn't award the goal because the infringement was whistled for incorrectly?

Do you not see the issues that looking to award a penalty after a whistle has gone opens up?

The point being that it was totally unnecessary to check either penalty or Fleck challenge. Firstly it was a great tackle for which nobody appealed and everyone was happy with the award of a Wolves throw in. It was routine stuff yet he felt the need to check when nobody else in the ground did. The first ‘penalty’ check he did was again baffling. Neither the ref or his assistants saw anything or any Wolves players appeal for a foul. As for the second one, the referee had blown his whistle at least 3-4 seconds before the ‘incident’ so again a non event. If it happened once then fair enough but you can understand people questioning his ability or worse still, his integrity. It was utterly bizarre at the time

I bet Shelvey talks like Chewbacca

All players were told that offside which look to be developing into a goal scoring opportunity won't stop play and to play on.
Not playing to the whistle is the stuff has no excuse.
I get the linesman raised his flag, but that's twice Hendo's been seemingly unaware of the rules which is really worrying and thankfully it's only cost us once.

We need to stop moaning about being hard done to, it's what we heard from Warnock every week and it gets old very quickly.

It was Moss on VAR at Spurs CB, but I agree, listening to Wilder it sounds like Atwell only briefed the Newcastle captain to continue playing after an offside flag unless he blows. So for decades, players have played on after the flag to waste time and even got booked for doing what Shelby did, but here we have a situation where every player on the pitch stops but Shelby and he strolls through and scores unchallenged. I don’t think even he thought it was a goal, he was just using the ref‘s advice to waste time.

That said, I think Bash cost us that game. He made 2 poor mistakes in the build up to the first goal and then was weak as crap defending the cross against a winger who’d never scored in the Premier League and supposedly has never scored a top level header in his career...I’m a big fan of Bash but his sloppyness gave them something to hang onto and set the scene for the game..but we move on, nobody’s died. 😉⚔️

Sorry mate as it’s all about opinion and all that but no way on this earth did Shelvey celebrate. You might want to watch that again

Yeah, looking at the Sky highlights rather than the ones I watched on here earlier (foreign commentary) he does look more sheepish.
