i were working and had no chance of getting to a TV or radio. Phone rang at work and a cricket mate , Trevor Lee was his name, not a great football follower but he rang about summat he wanted from work and then as a parting comment just said "i see your lot beat wednesday 3-1 tonight"... how can you repay wonderful happy news like that. I went to his funeral a few year ago i owed him so much!

Thanks Trevor, thanks United..... and thanks Lord Bassett for some of the best Blades supporting years of my life.

Anyway, let's have a chat about John Harris' football team.

No? Thought not....

Kick it Long; Kick it Hard; Kick it High.

So start a fucking thread about him silly bollocks. It's a message board for a bit of lively banter, not really the place for some senile old stoat pouring out the same old shit because he's got fuck all new to add to any conversation. Gets boring pretty quickly to be honest.

Time and place , wouldn't like to watch it now as teams have worked it out , and how to play it .
Didn't stop us getting promoted twice , and staying at the top table for a few years ,
Also didn't stop Ireland qualifying for a couple of world cups , and euros , under whar Jack Charlton .
Or Norway for USA 94 , one of worst game of ball ever played , Ireland v Norway , our own Flo played in the World Cup that year ,
Hasn't stopped Stoke staying up for the years under Pullis , or why Big Sam is always in demand for eager clubs
to stay in the money league .
Would I watch it , and enjoy it now No ,
did I watch it and enjoy it then , yes , only for the novelty of the success it brought back then
Time and a place Pinchy , time and a place .
Arise Sir Dave .

On the north stand near their kop, with hundereds of other blades. Actually went with a piggy pal and 2 other blades.

Great away performance that night. The defence were magnificent, Gayle marshalling the line, fast pacy counter attacking.

Wednesday had a fantastic team that year, it was a proper upset, but they totally bottled it, ultimately costing them the title.

Those years Sir Dave Bassett was manager were the best years following the Blades since 1975 but hopefully CW will emulate him

I rang my old man from the phone box on Penistone Road just so he could hear it. The atmosphere outside the ground was nearly as good as the one in it.

What a night. Got back to the Sidings in Dronfield for last orders and there were loads of lads in there who hadn't had tickets who'd watched it on Sky. Bill the landlord got back, rewound the video, pulled the curtains and locked the doors and we all watched it again.

Am sure I ought to have had a hangover the next morning but I couldn't wait to get into school for some reason :)
It wasn't live on Sky was it? I couldn't get a ticket and I'm sure I just listened on the radio at home and we had Sky Sports. I'm now worried that for some reason I just thought it wasn't on Sky and never bothered checking! I seem to remember highlights on ITV later that night. John Helm commentating.

Used to drink in the Sidings myself back then. Remember Bill. Good memories!

Could well be wrong about Sky - certainly not the video, highlights and lock-in though. Great night!

The video is YTV coverage.

We also sang "We beat the scum 5-1" quoting the aggregate score over both games that season. It sounded better.

Yes that rang out loud and proud to a very quickly emptying Sty! "What a waste of money" directed at Chris Woods is also a lovely memory as he delivered another wonderfully inept and nervous display!

Remember seeing a young lad, shitfaced walking away from the ground singing "Thank you very much for six points Wednesday, thank you very much, thank you very very very much......." bumping into cars, arms swinging away, off he went into the rain swept night! How I laughed; 14 I was then and I'll never ever forget my first visit to that place!!

Went to that game it was fantastic.
We were pretty late getting to the sty so we dumped car on Penistone Road near the ground and ran in just before kick off.
Chris Woods was terrible that night and 2 good goals from Sir Bobby Davison.1 of best away games I have been to.Hoping for the same tomorrow.
