Sheffield United boss Danny Wilson has admitted defeat in the race for automatic promotion from League One.

The Blades are one point behind second-placed Sheffield Wednesday but with both teams facing already-relegated opposition on the final day, Wilson does not see the Owls slipping up.

"I expect us to be in the play-offs," he told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"We've prepared for it and from my perspective if we have to go up that way, then so be it."

He added: "We've been ready for the play-offs for three months. We've had hotels booked and training facilities put on hold, just in case.

"We've kept it quiet because that's what you have to do. You don't want anything to take you by surprise."

United had looked set to clinch second place behind Charlton but one point from their last two matches has seen them overhauled by their fierce local rivals.

Wilson is confident that his side have the mental capacity to bounce back from the disappointment of having to go up through the play-offs, should that be the case.

"I'm not worried about it, we've got a great chance in front of us yet," he continued.

"There'll be no psychological dip. I know our record in the play-offs in the past hasn't been the best, but that counts for nothing.

"If you let it get to you then you may as well not bother at all."

The Blades travel to Exeter on Saturday and can only go up automatically if they better the result of Wednesday, who host Wycombe and are on a 13-match unbeaten run.

Cool we threw the towel in months ago.

Mind games but I guess Wednesday fans were booking a hotel for Wembley the other week.

You have to cater for all eventualities (unless it's losing you're star striker with 6 games to go).
A bit like England booking a flight after the group games.....
Be prepared!!

"I know our record in the play-offs in the past hasn't been the best...."

Slight understatement - could it actually be the worst given the number of times we've been in the play offs including Bristol City?

PNE have been in the PO 8 times unsucessfully.

We have 4 failures (+ BC), including 3 final defeats. We tie with a few other clubs on the most lost finals...

So we could clinch the records of the most points for finishing 3rd and the most play off final defeats, it has a Blades feel to it.

I hope he's wrong, I fear he isn`t, but i hope he is....

Worst play off final records:

Torquay united Played 5 won 2 lost 3 scored 8 (+5penshootoutgoals) conceded 9 (+4penshootoutgoals)
Bolton played 4 won 2 lost 2 scored 7 conceded 6
Reading played 3 won 0 lost 3 scored 7 conceded 11
Bristol City Played 3 won 0 lost 3 scored 3 conceded 9
Preston North End played 3 won 0 lost 0 scored 2 conceded 8
Leeds played 3 won 0 lost 3 scored 1 conceded 6
Sheffield United played 3 won 0 lost 3 scored 0 conceded 5

Torquay Fans must have nerves of steel!

Oh and Danny Wilson's record?

Play off finals 2 defeats 2

Play off semis 3 wins 2 defeats 1

Fair enough, thats the position that we're in right now... The team looked beaten on Sat at the final whistle.

But what we have to do now is win. If we get the win and Wednesday don't get a win, its Party time. Otherwise its 2/ 3 friendly games and then another season in L1.

Preston North End played 3 won 0 lost 0 scored 2 conceded 8
Hmm not won OR lost yet conceded 8 and only scored 2, i would have loved to be at the press conferences after those 3 games.
BUT my main question is who DID win or Lose those 3 finals?
Maybe West Ham, because it wouldnt be fair on the fans not to let them win or Wendy because they are SO MASSIVE, they dont even have to play to get a win, or even liverpool, well they would have won those games back in the 80's under paisley :)

Teams with worse playoff records than us:

Preston: 8 attempts, reached 3 finals, no wins
Bury: 6 attempts, reached 1 final, no wins
Brentford: 6 attempts, reached 2 finals, no wins

Every other team who has had 6 or more goes has won at least one final, although Ipswich's record (knocked out in the semis 6 times out of 7, won the final the other time) is pretty poor too.

United's record is identical to Bristol City's (5 attempts, 3 finals, no wins).

Forest have appeared most without even reaching a final (4 appearances). MK Dons, Oldham and Barnet have been in 3 semis each without victory.

Nobody has lost 4 finals, though United and Torquay could both still do that this season...Torquay have at least won one.

On the credit side, Peterborough (promoted 3 times out of 3) and Cheltenham (2 times out of 2) are the only teams who have featured more than once and have a 100% record.

Blackpool have won 4 finals, which is a record. Swindon and Palace have won 3 times (both in 6 attempts) as well as Peterborough.

Never in a league one playoff though have we?

Never in a league one playoff though have we?

1987-8 was a playoff with 3 league one sides (or division 3 as it was then), so this season is similar.

The team bottled it as soon as Ched was convicted. We can forget about winning the play offs. Half the team here now wont be next season if we dont go up this season. Maybe thats a good thing? hmmmm.

It's highly probable that we will end up having the highest total to come third then beat the record for the most times a team has lost in a POF.
We might score one this time though - so let's be thankful for small mercies eh?

Already said most of that and torquay have won 2 finals.

No they haven't. They've won 1, in 1991.

They've also won a Conference playoff, but that isn't a league playoff.

It's a Play off Final, same format and the result is the same.

They have won 2.

I have the worst playoff record ever. Not only do I have every Blades defeat but I can add one defeat in the semis whilst supporting Rochdale and two days before United v Burnley I was at the Shewsbury v Gillingham for my brothers stag do. We had adopted Shewsbury for the day and they lost 1-0 to a goal that came in the last 10 mins. Add to this other Wembley visits:- supporting Spurs in 87 against Cov (Cov won), supporting Liverpool v Dons (Dons won), and being dragged by the Mrs Eggman to see Muse play live there (everyone lost that day) I think the place should be knocked down again.

I have seen one team I was supporting win there but it really didn't count (Wendy v Man U) went for my Dad, please don't ask any more, I'll only add that at least I was getting food when they scored!
