Blackburn either have the best strikers in the history of world football or been incredibly lucky.

In 4 games they've only had 11 shots on target with over half of them going in.

Their Xg is 0.67 per game but actual goals is double that at 1.5 per game

Meanwhile we've had almost double the amount of shots on target (20) and scored the same amount 6.

Our Xg is over double theirs at 1.47 per game and we're about on par scoring 1.5 per game.

Blackburn are riding a lucky wave, expect it to plateau out sooner rather than later.

No love lost between this two sides in the world famous A628-Then-Merge-Into-The-M60/M66-Then-Turn-Left-Onto-The-B6232-Then-Continue-Onto-The-A666 Derby
True story, but when I was 17 I went on holiday to somewhere near Blackpool. Anyhow, as a good looking chap I was a bit of a hit with the ladies on the caravan site and in the club. Well, I was 17, these 2 were best mates and were 16 so hardly ladies. They lived across from Ewood Park and I could have fucked em both but didn't.

Very much that's as close I've ever got to Ewood Park. 👍

Can anyone else beat THAT for a tedious link? 😂😂

What the fuck is xG and why does it exist?

The 'Ainsley Harriot Once Bottled A Viable Threesome' Derby has a better ring to it, I admit 😁

Complete bollocks malarkey. Expected goals? Based on quality of chance? Does the goalkeeper get taken into account?

I've had the same argument several times. I find analytics to be, for the most part, a crock of bullshit. It takes none of the human factors into account, but yet it's very popular these days. Major League Baseball teams in America employ people on very high salaries solely for this purpose.

So what's a penalty then in xG terms?

There are 2 outcomes. Score or miss. So is it a 0.5? Or 3 outcomes. Score miss or saved. 0.33?

Analytics on their own are only useful to a point. But as part of a set of tools it's very useful.

Knowing how often someone does something in a certain situation is good knowledge to have. Knowing players tendencies (99.8% of the time Baldock does a pointless Cryuff turn and passes backwards etc) means you can help your players prepare for the opposition.

Well that's fair enough, perhaps I'm being a bit harsh in my criticism.

There seems to have been a strong trend in recent years, however towards analytics being given a bit too much primacy.
The problem with analytics is that it is by its nature, an entirely quantitative form of measurement, and doesn't - indeed cannot- take into account qualitative aspects such as player's confidence, team morale, team cohesion and understanding of changing tactical roles etc.

100% agree. It's a lot more useful when used by teams who've got the time and inclination to add context than fans using it without the ability to see the bigger picture.

XG is obviously the big one that's used by and for fans. It's something I'd find useful to see how a game went if I didn't see it. Wednesday night I think it was about 2 - 0.25 in Uniteds favour. I'd see that as the better team won but not take any real detailsfrom it. The problems come when it's used as a definitive tool instead of actually watching the games.

Another one to look forward to. Watford was a chore but the other games have been really enjoyable, and I reckon this will be the same.

Blackburn have some quality of course but are coming off a bad defeat and I don’t think their start has been as hard as ours.

On Wednesday I predicted 4 points from 2 home games. Based on what I’ve seen I’m now going for 6. Think we will win and do it comfortably. This is on the assumption that nobody got injured we don’t know about….

I see XG as the analytical equivalent of walking out of the ground saying “can’t believe we’ve lost/won that”. It puts a figure to that feeling of whether or not the game ended up going how you felt it should, watching in real time.

I've noticed Sky bigging-up fixtures as 'derbies' that have never been a derby. Bristol City v Cardiff is now the 'Severnside Derby'. Watford v Chelsea last season was a London Derby apparantly.
