I think the glory days were probably a few decades before, like those British Pathe newsreels.

The new footage on the video above is our away win at Hull in February 1988 (9:30 onwards). Watching that it is hard to see the pre-Sky glory days people talk about.

One of my early away days with my Dad. I remember we went to Notts County, Huddersfield and Bradford in the seasons before. Hull was the further field trip!

I was only 9 but loved it. I sat in the side stand not far from the angle from the camera (just to the left hand side) and remember seeing all the Blades stood on that terrace behind (near the supermarket).

Remember Beagrie's goal well. He scored a lot like this for us. Tremendous ball player with great long range shots. Sadly he often overplayed and tried to beat his man 15 times! You see this on the video. No surprise he went onto play top flight football with Everton and had a long and pretty distinguished career.

Weird game and line up. Mixture of McEwan's lot on way out such as Beagrie, Morris, Barnsley, Leaning, Cadette etc with new boys like Agana, Downes, Hetherston (although he went as quick as he came).

Some of the football is dreadful when you watch these old clips with smatterings of quality but a lot of kick and rush. However, the pitches were often a lot worse then - many including the Lane seem to be quagmires.

Great video. Keep em coming!

Surprised to see Leaning making very good saves
Not surprised to see another shot by Hetherston hitting the woodwork
An error by Garry Parker (later to play for Clough's Forest) gifted Cadette the equaliser
Lovely winner by Beagrie but it was a pity the camera missed half of his somersault celebrations

Ten out of the twenty-one teams in the top division are no longer there, with potentially a further three to follow at the end of this season. Shows how much things can change. Who knows where we'll all be in another thirty years.

Oh the league ladders. Something so simple gave me so much enjoyment.

It was always my second job on a Saturday evening, after reading the green un, to update them.

The coloured tabs representing the team colours were magical and I got such a buzz from moving teams up and down the ladder each week.

Those of a younger age group are probably saying “get a life” but in those days it gave me immense pleasure

Yep - loved ‘em along with my poster map of all the clubs with nicknames and ground names.

The Garner, "Garner, good tackle by Booker" Garner in the Blackpool 4-1 win is Andy Garner our future number 2 under Clough. He scored their goal that day. I followed his career a bit because he went to our school.

Is that our pike for notts county (and Barnes in the same game)?
Jamie Hoyland for Bury, Nigel Clough for Forest, Billy Whitehurst for Oxford, Imre Varadi for Man City, Ray McHale for Scarborough. Possibly Paul Garner for Blackburn?

David Barnes Aldershot, Billy Whitehurst Oxford,Bobby Campbell Wigan, Jamie Hoyland Bury, Ray McHale Scarborough,Imre Varadi Man City, Wayne Allison Halifax, Mark Patterson Blackburn,Stuart McCall Bradford &. Clough

A question to which I don’t know the answer: which of them played for us first and when, and which played for us last and when? I reckon 1976 (Varadi) and 2004 (Allison).
