Christ. John Hope was even fucking worse than I remember.

Shittest goalkeeper we ever had until Baxter.

One of the goals against us at Selhurst Park is scored by the "ball winning" midfielder, Gerry Queen.

I'm reminded that he appeared in one of the greatest ever newspaper headlines, as featured in "The Private Eye Book of Boobs":

"QUEEN IN BRAWL AT PALACE"

Palace's scorers were Tony Taylor, John Hughes (2), Len Badger (o.g.) and John McCormick. Gerry Queen was a forward

Like that headline!

My dad said he once excused some blunder by saying he'd been dazzled by the floodlights.
Yes, Hope did say that!

First time since December 1971 I have seen the goals in the 5-1 defeat at Palace apart from John "Yogi" Hughes 2nd goal that won the Goal of the month

The first half goals were in colour and the second half were in black and white!

Indeed you are right - the Floodlights were good enough for colour TV in the first half but as the natural light dimmed they weren't bright enough to transmit the 2nd half in colour...........how times have changed so quickly - kids go bonkers if there isn't enough bandwidth to play a bloody computer game !

Knew Palace was on MOTD and have been unable to find on YouTube. Interesting watch.

Were the yellow shirts a one off, or did we wear them again?
I was at the match but dont remember being surprised that we were wearing gold shirts. About 30 years later I saw a photo of Billy Dearden challenging John Jackson from that match and I was surprised we wore gold. Looks like the ref wasnt happy with our away shirts (white) so we must have borrowed the gold shirts from somewhere

Played well for us in 1971 apart from West Ham League Cup game

Trust me we have had far worse. Hope wasn't a bad keeper at all until he had one of those indescribable blips that all keepers have (even the best). Crisis of confidence, call it what you will, most get through it over time, some never do. From my distant memory of him, he just "lost it". I reproduce a wikipedia entry for him which may or may not be true but is more my memory of him until those "floodlight moments".

He kept his place as Sheffield United went on to clinch promotion to the First Division at the end of the season, with a run of results that included seven consecutive clean sheets, a club record that stood until beaten by Mark Howard more than 40 years later.[9] According to team-mate Tony Currie, Hope "was a top line player who, like everyone else made a couple of mistakes, but because of his position they were highlighted more than the rest of us. John, though, had the heart of a lion. He was one of the bravest I've ever seen."[9]

Celtic fans used to shout "Feed The Bear"...
hence "Yogi" ...

A "Lisbon Lion" .... but didn't play in vs Inter Milan.

Had injury problems at Celtic. Palace offered a lot of money for him and Celtic accepted their offer. He played only 20 games for Palace

One of the players Jock Stein cleared out of Parkhead, although he didn't want to leave!
Stein at the time was recreating a side and he was one of those players who wasn't in his plans.
Caused enough resentment for him not to attend Stein's funeral.

He scored the winning goal against L**ds in the 2nd leg of the 1970 European Cup semi final

I'd forgotten about some of those bad defeats....Great start with the unbeaten run though..Top of the League, then Old Trafford, locked outside and that defeat seemed to knock us back..Those clips bring back some memories, especially the Spurs and Man City games where I was in the Kop..Derby were a big of a bogey side back then..can't remember us beating them around that time...Cheers Walthy, keep them coming, great job.

TV highlights weren't very kind to us that season. Those first few months of that season were incredible. Looking back I don't think I've ever experienced such an elated feeling that those games gave us. Generally speaking being 16 years old is a great age but to be a Blade at that time was something else. Great post Walthy.
