You are correct that it was Roger Hunt. Don't know if Gordon Taylor played. Yes he is now high up in the PFA

strange aint it
all that Pinchy goes on about hoof , I watch this video and the first game v blackpool , our 2 goals are long hoofs knocked forward
would you credit it

seems it wasnt just a Bassett preserve

was there at the baseball ground for that game in 71 and the cup game after the everton win bit funny really somehow united managed to sell us tickets for wrong side of pop side terrace and coppers let about 20 of us climb over wall and in to section of pop side where our fans were got pelted by oranges apples and other unmentionables from derby fans lol remember some derby fans trying to get in our bit and lasting about 2 minutes got battered

Long ball from the back straight to head for a flick on = hoof
Long ball from the back straight to feet = wonderful pass

Both long passes against Blackpool were straight to feet. Under Harris, there is no evidence of long balls from the back straight to the head for a flick on.

Next question please?

so why did we lose as many if we had such skilled individuals
all long ball s that fall to feet are inch perfect passes
bassetts team managed plenty
perhaps too often to call them hoof well no more than the earlier version

its being petty saying otherwise

the way the team fell away 69 70 suggests the radar was off the last 10 games

It was the 4 successive defeats in March that did the damage. After Woody's rocket winner at home to Carlisle on 13th march we were looking good in 2nd place with 7 games left but we lost the next 4 (Boro (a), Leicester (a), Bolton (h) and Blackpool (a)) and allowed Blackpool to take the 2nd promotion spot. Was at the Leicester and Bolton games. I was too young to remember why we lost these games but I recall we had a good goal disallowed at Leicester and in the 1st minute against Bolton

I remeber in the 90 promotion we we on tv one week , hit a 50 yard ball to feet for Deane to score in a game on YTV and the commentator saying the long hit and hope worked for the blades , Exactly a week later Leeds were on , scored an inch by inch exactly identical goal by Chapman , but the commentator waxed lyrical about Strachan hitting a long pass to feet

since that day any shit regarding long ball I think , bloody Leeds fans full of shit

Loved that, many thanks. Still my favourite kit. How tame are the goal celebrations, none of this modern sliding nonesense. Probably just as well looking at the state of some the pitches. Slide on those pitches and you'd probably not stop for 50 yards. Not so much Desso as Messo, particularly Derby's.

Other televised appearances this season were...

An away win against Portsmouth in August (BBC - Footage no longer exists)
An away draw against Norwich in December (Anglia)
An away defeat to Cardiff in January (HTV)

Just seen this post - need to get on here more often..... 69/70 was my second season watching the Blades and funny how time (and beer....) has not dulled the brain enough that I still remember some of those goals like it was yesterday. Hadn't forgotten the sheer class of Woody and (early days choir boy haircut....) TC but had forgotten how good Addison was in the #9 role. And so funny that the first game in 1970 was (almost) in color as color TV technology was obviously still in its infancy....

It was funny when QPR sub Clive Clark tried to take on Eddie after being tripped. He was lucky that the others intervened as he was no match for our captain!

Difficult to believe now but until the 1977-78 season the Blades had never finished below 11th in the old Second Division (Championship). A feat only bettered by Arsenal and equalled by Chelsea and Liverpool. Better than Man U, Spurs, Newcastle, Wednesday.

To think that this club's decline has all happened since then and of that time since the 1976-77 season, 39 seasons, 18 have delivered a below 11th spot finish in the second tier of English Football.

You learn something every day!

That ought to be carved in stone and set in the centre of the boardrrom table. Our custodians and the (mainly) shite managers they have appointed since John Harris, should bear this burden.

Thanks for the memories Walthamstow. That was my first full season as a Blade, I had a season ticket in the front row of the Bramall Lane stand right above the goal.

There's a longer version which I'll post properly at some point soon.

I was sat in the BLUT from 1970 and had a season ticket between 1971 and 1977 (front row too-seat A85)

Walthy I am going to dispute the Portsmouth televised game. IIRC the match was actually in September, it was midweek, we won 5-1 ......and I was there as it was my first ever away game (although a home game for me as I lived on the Isle of Wight).

Don't think it was televised..... sorry.

The 5-1 win at Portsmouth in the 1969-70 season was on Saturday 16th August 1969 and it was televised for MOTD regional highlights
The 5-1 win at Portsmouth in the 1970-71 season (the one you went to) was on Wednesday 30th September 1970 (Woody hat-trick, Graeme Crawford played in goal for us and John Tudor played at centre back) and it wasnt televised. We scored 5 goals in three games in succession against Pompey (won 5-0 at the Lane in October 1969 being the second one)
