Sheff Utd Trivia Question... (90s)

Oh I'm coming back alright mate!! :)
And with zero negative responses about my choice of football club I may even stick around!

I didn't expect this message to be met with so many responses, a very knowledgable group.

Matthew Foreman is indeed the answer I was after (appreciate my clues may have been applicable to other players of the time).

Nicely done!
Foreman's birthdate is 15.02.75. On the 9th of August 1994 he came on as a sub for United in a pre season friendly at Hillsborough, replacing Kevin Gage 5 minutes before full time. He was on the pitch as Bobby Davison got the 3-2 winner just before full time. The crowd was almost 14,000.

Foreman had a good summer in 1994, also playing for our U19s in a tournament in Chateauroux. In the first game he got the only goal in a 1-0 win over the hosts St Christophe. He then scored a hat trick against Cannes in a 4-0 win. A 0-1 defeat against a Czeck side meant nothing, as United qualified to the knock out stages. In the semi final Foreman got another as United beat Metz 2-0. In the final United played the same Czeck team that beat them in the group stages. It ended 1-1, with United winning the penalty shootout, with Foreman among United's scorers.

In the anglo-italian cup he played 22 minutes, replacing Ross Davison, against Udinese, and the full game in the away win at Piacenza.

The above info is from one 1994 issue of the "Scandinavian Blade".

Thanks a lot Bergen! Didn't know any of that, great info!! 👏

Looks like he knew where the net was going by the U19 tournament he had.

I went to Piacenza, the Club took a double decker coach.

A good time was had by all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's awesome! Sounds like you've got some fond memories of the trip 👍

And that's what it's all about at the end of the day, right?

The great revelation from this thread for me is that we've had two players called Zivkovic. Who'd have thought that was possible? I have absolutely no memory of the first and the second is fading very fast - now plying his trade in Singapore.

There you go! Ain't you glad I showed up here then Jim?!

Do you live in Lewisham, are you a pork based product named Lewis or are you a West Ham fan named Lewis?

Can we start abusing you yet, we’ve already used up the quota of ‘West Ham fans we pretend we like’ on the forum haven’t we HammerInPeace ?

Not from Lewisham.
My full name is not "Lewis Ham".
Not a fan of / pretending to be Lewis Hamilton.
Not a pork based product.
However my name IS Lewis and I am indeed a fan of West Ham United. Let's be honest, we're the 2nd favourite team for all you guys ;)

Yup I've heard there's already a Hammer lurking among yourselves! So I'll stick around and give him some company.

I'll cut you a deal Houston?
If I behave myself on the forums and play nice (promise not to mention 3rd party ownership or everyone's favourite Argentinian) we can talk football?

Finally, I've been to Bramall Lane only twice in the WHU away following...
W0 D0 L2 😫

So when I turn up, so do Sheff Utd!!

There's no pretence, HammerInPeace is a well liked and welcome member on the forum. Top man in my book.

Both very welcome 👍🏼

Unfortunately we operate in different footballing stratospheres nowadays!

Look on the bright side mate...

12 months of no VAR.
Steel City Derby.
Winning matches frequently.
Possible Wembley trip...

Could be a good season ahead!

The top one is good, the 2nd one scares me, the 3rd one is very dependent on recruitment this summer (something that also scares me), the 4th one is an expensive place to lose a game of football (for us).

My hope for next season is that we get some investment and shake ourselves out of this current downwards momentum. It might be a season of consolidation though.

I'm confused now, so your name is Lewis and you support West Ham ?

I always believed you was a Geordie and supported the Barcodes but I suppose spending all that time in and around Oxford with Mr Morse might have had something to do with it 🤔

Auf Wiedersehen

You’re welcome to stay - one of the soundest people on this forum is a Hammer.

I will stay on the forum Gimli - seem like a decent group you've got on here and we're all football fans at the end of the day.
As you probably guessed by this point, I'm a grown man with zero interest in being a dickhead to people I don't know on the Internet 👍

Just catching up with some of the replies here... Brian Deane I had to google that reference but it makes sense now!

The Wally Downes name that keeps coming up on these team sheets... (we had him as assistant for a while).
Confused with that as I know you had Bassett at the time. Can only guess he was sent out to Italy with the reserves whilst Dave Bassett stayed home?
But other places say Downes was employed by Palace during that season so I couldn't piece the puzzle together there...

Either way that's a great find with that team sheet there Ball_Sup (Phil)

The Carrier Bag Firm have an online picture library of every Sheffield United Programme or Teamsheet that we've been able to find. The Cesena (& Piacenza) Teamsheet are on that.

Here's the Programme shot from the first time we ever played West Ham United.

Lee Zivkovic was the steward of the Catholic club in Doncaster for a while. He now lives in Sheffield. I used to work with his dad, Pete.

I've been telling my pig "mate" (don't judge me) for years about this match but for the life of me couldn't remember which year it was other than Bobby Davidsons winner. I was sure it was called the Steel City Challenge Cup.

Just seen your post from 5th May HarryHaslam - Thanks for sharing those photos!

The amount of information gathered here from members of this forum is impressive 👏
When you consider I was looking for info on something that happened 30 years ago.
