Wasn't much of a United team in fairness
What could we really expect (and I include Wilder in that ) many inexperienced young lads thrown together with mainly players searching for fitness(minutes).
Having said that we should have beat a 1st division team playing there strongest team (I think) some of the lads who did well against Wrexham didn't have a good game .
S Peck had a great game against Wrexham ! Just wernt his night tonight 19 year old it does happen, if anything he was trying too hard to impress which led him to make wrong decisions and running into trouble in a congested midfield. Kept at it though and never hid this kid is going to be a reit player for us.
Big learning curve for the kids and they will learn from it.
Wilder reacted the way you would expect but! Putting out a side like that he would know we could get beat and we did.
Bring on Watford!.

I never thought I would say this, but this competition needs either a massive overhaul or binning completely.

It used to be a good opportunity for supporters of lower league teams to get a bigger club at home just like the FA Cup was. Both teams would be at full strength and attendances high.

Ever since Alex Ferguson decided to play his reserves in cup competitions, and like sheep everyone followed along, it has become a travesty. The timing of the competition does not help. Even a first team is not up to speed at this stage, the fans don’t even know if the players they are watching will be with the club on Sunday, so how can anyone expect coherent football from a random XI with the season still new?

I feel sorry for all the fans who went to Oakwell, or indeed wasted 2 hours of their evening watching that pile of s*** on TV. In the old days, you would get a match up like this in the Central League, ‘Minutes in Players Legs’? - Central League

The competition has been ruined by the clubs attitudes to it, what was witnessed last night was a Central League level match at best. 5000 would not have travelled to watch Central League/reserves, so this match was misleadingly marketed and the supporters taken for a ride. I would be wanting my money back.

Since we chucked that FA Cup game against Barnet under Wilder I'll not bother with any cup matches whilst he's manager. Don't know why fans get so worked up about it, he's never given two fucks about the cups so I refuse to get irate when we inevitably go out to a team that does. I'd get the outrage if it were a league game but 🤷🏼‍♀️

Wilder's honest aim is always to lose these games, so it's not worth reading into at all

Tonight was yet another example how you never really regret not going to a league cup match

If Wilder had any interest in winning he wouldn't have played Hampson and Marsh in the same team. Let alone fucking Coulibaly
It’s not an intention to go into a cup match and lose. The preparation that goes into a game (detailed analysis and training) is phenomenal. We’ve played at the weekend rest sunday and Monday start taking in feedback from weekend game and then Barnsley analysis and training to replicate came plan while at the same time preparing for Sunday. Any plans that are laid out and executed for a mid week win is a bonus. I would have thought feedback from last night is going to be minimal seeing as though incomings and outgoings etc before Friday might determine some players leaving

Surely as a fan he knows we've had some great cup runs and it gives the place a buzz.

I was surprised that he didn't start Cooper last night, I thought it might have been an ideal chance to get the keeper and 2 centre backs accustomed to each other, and if the plan was to play out from the back especially from goal kicks, don't start Davies who can't kick it and takes an age to distribute the ball.

Every single one of the travelling 5k knew what type of team would be put out.
Got to be honest but yeah. We have plenty of previous for this so anyone going with an expectation of a full side was always going to be disappointed.

Having said that they are still professional footballers and you’d expect to see a certain standard from them, not getting dicked by Barnsley who apparently made some changes too?

I honestly don't understand why we are persevering with Brewster, he's completely lost it as a striker.

He should have gone on loan to a div 1 or 2 team in the remote hope he might get some form back. It's completely pointless having in the squad as it stands.

It was a nice gesture to give him the captaincy. I just wish he had rewarded the faith shown in him with a brace of goals.

It’s hardly worth worrying about, it was a fitness exercise for most players.

If the manager doesn’t put a coherent team out then you can’t expect them to function coherently.

Just shows that our reserves aren’t good enough with Peck as the exception. Peck wanted to get on the ball, everyone else looked either rusty or not good enough.

Meh

The thing I don't get is why these young professional athletes on salaries most people can only dream about never seem to be fit.

After watching the match on my tablet last night, I'm looking for an Italian launderette to wash my bed sheets. Woke up absolutely drenched this morning.

Supporter scammed tonight
How were they scammed?

We’ve put out weakened teams in the cup for as long as I remember.

It’s like going to an Elvis tribute and kicking off because it’s not the real Elvis

I see no comparison whatsoever uh uh

Some crazy takes on this thread.
I fully expected us to play a weakened team consisting of mainly kids and squad players.
I watched a similar line-up perform well in the last round and get a positive result against Wrexham.
I bought a ticket for last night's game in the hope of seeing our promising youngsters perform well again.
Unfortunately, the team did not perform to the same standard they set in the last round. Young players can be inconsistent, it's the risk you take when you play them.
Wilder has every right to be disappointed that the players he picked didn't perform to the standard he knows they are capable of. It would be negligent of him not to demand high standards from squad players.
I'd have found it more strange if he had put out the first team just because a lot of Blades showed up for a game against a local team, rather than stick with the team that got a positive result and put on a good show in the last round.
It's the League Cup, get over it. We're in the Saturday-Tuesday grind of the Championship now and we can't afford to be picking up injuries in competitions that are of secondary importance to us.

The league is our priority and in trying to find a settled side Wilder's going to end up with a few players lacking match practice. Which makes the cup games quite handy. I always look forward to them, hoping that there is one or two who impresses enough to put them into the reckoning for the first team. Like Souttar and Peck vs Wrexham.

But it's won't always be successful. These players haven't played a lot and certainly not played a lot together. Some players were just back from injury/illness, some are new signings, some may be on their way out and some may not be in their favoured role. The result is a team where player relations have not been developed, the playing style not perfected. Runs not being made, runs not spotted; going "safe" and backwards too often. Barnsley looked quite compact all night and we struggled to find space. The starting line up lacked pace and someone to be a threats in behind.

Against a quite experienced and physical Barnsley side, away, I don't think we should be too surprised about how it turned out. On a different night, maybe getting the first goal would have been enough to settle a few nerves and we may have seen better player performances.

The bed wetting 'supporters' of this club will never be pleased. Moan moan moan no matter what the situation

Funny how we never hear from them when we are doing well.

Will be interesting when the new owners are announced. I'm sure there will be something to whinge about lads 👍

Telling me that was actually acceptable on any
Level? Gior man. Was shite

After a good sleep, a hearty breakfast and some fresh air, I have had the chance to reflect on a disappointing evening last night. I don't feel as pee'd off as I did on the train home last night.

The big factor for me is I don't think we will achieve a decent following in the early stages of a cup game like that under Wilder ever again. If the games are going to be treated as development squad games, then the attendences will reflect this. I think Wilder lost a lot of good-will regarding cup games last night. It was a great chance to send the 5,000 traveling fans home with a huge buzz, full of optimism ready for Watford at home - which will be tough!!

I used to love a cup game under the lights. Such a pity. Ah well - we move on.

I see no comparison whatsoever uh uh
Well you can’t have been watching us long if you weren’t expecting changes to the team in a cup game. It’s always been the case. Not saying I agree with it but it’s nothing new 🤷

Fuck result we took 5k Great away following that’s all that counts. It’s what pigs say anyway init 👍

HE WASN'T REAL?!?! Refund please! 😡

Wilder probably already on thin ice and a few cracks starting to show under foot after that following on from very average league performances.
He'll get some time but not that much if new owners come in.
Agreed, like some I'd like to see CW given a chance (I wasn't bothered about him coming back but at least he's tried to settle the ship ) but I fear the new owners will have already been looking at possible replacements
4 at the back will only work with centre halves that have played regularly as a 2 , as I know personally it can take up to 6 months to build a relationship with someone learn their movements and adapt accordingly and a big part is having a regular goalkeeper behind you as they can see everything on the pitch
The very best keepers are absolutely crackers and vocal
CW should have used this game for cooper and his "first choice 2" to start the understanding each other process
