It wasn’t a defensive issue

TBF, it wasn't just a defensive issue though, but that was a key part of it.
  • Defensive issues
  • a lack of protection for the defence due to the absence of a proper CDM, did he get asked why Soumare didn't play?
  • not taking chances combined with not having a bit of luck in front of goal, mainly not taking chances
  • a mad 6 minutes at the start of the second half where the game was taken away from us and our heads dropped as a result

I know what he said but to say at all it wasn’t a defensive issue at all is laughable
So let me play devils advocate for a moment, given we aren't bringing anyone in imminently in that department it seems. Do you think it's the best strategy for the manager to publicly say yeah the defence were and are shit?

I don't think he's wrong at all in what he said about us simply not defending at all and just essentially losing our heads completely when they countered.

He literally said it wasn't a defensive issue because we weren't defending much, but instead it was an issue with how we reacted when he lost possession and how we were too naïve on the ball and left ourselves exposed. More about the transition from having the ball to reacting to a counter attack. Hardly difficult to grasp the difference.

I'd have to partly agree. The defence got left out to dry by a poor midfield in front of them, two of whom weren't dropping back quickly into position to protect the back four. Burrows was more culpable then the centre backs. A player he left unmarked scored. Two other players had to try to block a cross of a player he was supposed to be marking.

Peck, Hamer and Burrows had more reasons to have the fingers pointed at them than Bindon and RND. All three were defensively woeful against Bristol who ran through us with ease due to them being so high up the pitch. Arguably that could also be a tactical fault that Bristol exploited to great effect.

I mean, the first was a wonder free kick.

The second was a break and a great strike following 25 mins camped in their half.

3rd and 4th were both RND with ridiculously poor passes that were nowhere near their intended targets.

I’ve not seen us walked through like that for a long time. Even those big hammerings in the premier league the season before last didn’t all come from sides running us like Bristol City did. It felt like we were in danger every time we lost the ball

First was a freekick came from some poor defending

There was a theme that when we lost the ball anywhere on the pitch we seemed to be in danger

I can't pretend to understand football beyond hoofing it into the channels, but at the start of the second half it seemed pretty clear that they had spotted something tactically in our set up which they thought they could exploit: they seemed to have more players much further forwards, it just looked dangerous.

Whatever it was, it really wasn't a surprise that they scored so quickly, and that they followed it up not long after.

As far as I could tell the only reason they didn't go and score several more was that 4-1 was clearly enough for them. After that they parked the bus or set up a "low block" (whatever that is), and would try to score on the break if the chance arose - it did.

The fact that at 4-1 we didn't come close to breaking them down, and that arguably their best chance came when they were already 4-1 up only adds to a pretty large collection of things that need to be put right.

I've not completely given up hope of avoiding relegation, but as it is we've got our work cut out in several areas including recruitment, tactics, and motivation.

I think the last time was the 3 nil battering from Hull last season, wonder who their manager was 🤔.

If we'd gone up and the club were still set on replacing Wilder, we'd be looking at Selles' team at home to West Ham, who are no great shakes at Premier League level, tearing us a new one and the doom-mongery would also be in full force, in anticipation of a very long hard season, again.

Attack-wise, though, especially in the first half after going behind, we looked decent and tested the keeper on numerous occasions and Campbell scored a very well worked goal.

Facing our own goal, we were utterly clueless and was akin to some of the worst performances in the Prem under Hecky and Wilder. It was like Newcastle where they just gave up.

I’m not having that. Newcastle, Arsenal, Brighton twice and many many more tore through us left right and centre.

Personally I don't think we have the right players for the system he wants to play.
If he isn't backed significantly then he will probably have to rethink the formation.
If he isn't backed properly he'll probably lose his job and we'll end up bringing in Hecky, Wilder or maybe Monty this time for the rescue job.
Scarcely believable what's happening (or not happening) off the pitch at the moment.

Absolutely nobody seems to understand his point. The defence wasnt the only issue he meant, it was mainly the turnovers.
How I took that he meant when we lost possession, as a team, we didn't recover, track, move or defend in time or well.

I'm not worried whether I understand his point.

When these oracles speak I just sit there and wonder whether this "in transition" business is something to do with Nicola Sturgeon.

I am worried whether the players understand his point. Not all of them are intellectuals.

Worrying thing is I don’t think he understood
