Selles interviews

This recent interview prodded me into saying something. Summer with no major International comp is dull. Thank fuck for Bazball. Re Selles. I'm feeling cautiously optimistic - He's clear in his principles and he's openly talking about a style of football. Not 'three ways to beat a team.....' but an actual, identifiable system and plan. It sounds like he's proactive - we'll plan for the opposition, be coached on a per game basis. Last year it felt like we were in the 'this is us, try to break us' mould, and, when teams figured out how (2nd PL Season anyone?) we had no answer. Ironically, Selles' Hull was one of the teams that sussed us last season. This is music to my ears. So many times last season I sat watching thinking 'what's the plan?' It turned out the plan was get it to Hamer, pass it around the final third and hope something happens, then shut up shop when we're one up. Ultimately, that didn't work so here we are, Selles Blades.

I think, from the owners' perspective, they've done what comes naturally to them. They've identified a candidate for a role that brings a loooong CV. A CV littered with diverse achievements, skills, and experiences. A candidate that, off the field, raises the bar of what a United manager looks like. On the field, we need a revolution. Again. BUT, this time it's about the physical side of the game, not technicians – I think the short-term challenge Selles brings is going to be getting the whole squad fit enough for them to go full tilt for 90 mins. After hearing him say things like 'maybe your statistics are the best in the world, but I need my team to have the best statistics in the world, not you yourself' I wonder who’s going to be left standing 😂 That’s exciting, in a way. I like the idea that we’re moving away from sentiment and jobs for the boys and towards players being selected on merit.

But it’s going to be a hard reset, because let’s be real - how many in this current squad can actually do what he’s going to ask of them?

There’s a lot being said about how demanding Selles is. Intensity, high press, transitions at speed, mentally switched-on from minute one to ninety. That’s not just coaching - it’s a full-body lifestyle change.

Hamer and Campbell? 70 mins, done.
Souza (God love him) starts stretching the hammies around 60 like clockwork.
Hamer and Anel both off in the Playoff Final.
Davies - proper player - but built like a Victorian lampshade.
Burrows for McCallum became a default.
Robinson gives everything but usually looks dead on his feet by the end.

Honestly, the only ones who might be able to hack it are Callum O’Hare and Sydie Peck (if West Ham fuck off). And the forwards? Moore barely got a sniff of 90 mins, Cannon was in and out, and Brewster’s hamstrings are made of actual cheese - I think his fitness record is going to be the nail in the contract coffin. No way does a high intensity pressing, Selles team feature Rhian Brewster.

None of this is a dig BTW. It's just where we're at - we need Athletes who are also great at football.

If this is the plan - and for once it feels like we have one - then the squad needs proper reinforcements. Legs. Engines. Players who can run for 90, twice a week, for 9 months. Not just flair, but function.

I'm hopeful that given the right regime, the majority of the lads we have will rise to the physical challenge, but we need new bodies and, it'll take time, maybe more than one window. Again. But if the club really are moving into a new era then I think the Owners and their experience of 'Speculate to Accumulate' will see us right - He won't succeed unless he’s backed but I genuinely think he will be.

Having said all that, I can see a certain alignment with my opening - Bazball. As England Cricket fans, are we happier that we we're entertained but sometimes fall short as opposed to 2.5 days of forward defensive straight batting to sometimes get success?

Ruball anyone?

I did say it was me being impatient

Thats the problem with the majority of football fans these days
Do you just want to go out and sign players just because they are available or do you wait and sign the players that will fit the system. The players that fit the system may not be available at this point in time

Yes I appreciate they cant sign until 1 July generally but I was looking at the likes of Hull who have signed 4 players and Norwich who have signed at least 3 with a modicum of envy.
I know its me being impatient I get excited at the prospect of us signing new players but I do think the last few pre seasons have been a last minute cobble together with little time to prepare the team tactically, I was just hoping Selles would have a little bit more time to work with his new squad but I understand especially with loan signings it can be tricky to get them done early.
With respect, who are you expecting us to have signed already. I've just had a look through the championship signings so far, there's not a single one I would want playing for us - Harry Darling at a push but even he I think has been over-hyped by our fans because of previous links.

In addition, the clubs you'd hope we'd be competing with (Leicester, Southampton, Ipswich, Boro etc) have signed 3 players between them - again none of which I think we'd be excited by.

I agree its important we get signings in early - but its also important they are the right players, which often take longer to get anyway.

Window's not officially open yet. All the 'deals' we're hearing about so far are prearrangements. I don't think players can't 'play' for their new clubs until they register with can't happen until after June 1st so signing early wouldn't nett anything, on the pitch. It'd just mean that others can't sign them I guess.
Transfer window is open. Per this article from the EFL which states:

The EFL has today confirmed the opening and closing dates for the 2025 summer transfer window.

Open: Sunday 1 June to Tuesday 10 June (19:00)
Close: Tuesday 10 June (19:00:01) to Monday 16 June (00:01)
Re-open: Monday 16 June to Monday 1 September (19:00)

I think you're mistaking the transfer window, for the typical contract expiry date. Barring exceptions, contracts for players (and usually staff as well) expire on June 30th, meaning that players who allow their contracts to run out, and move elsewhere on a free transfer, do not officially change club until July 1st. This is perfectly demonstrated by Trent Alexander-Arnold. His move from Liverpool to Real Madrid on a free was not going to go ahead until July 1st, until the clubs agreed a financial package to allow him to move early.

If we were to complete a transfer for a player this week (i.e we "buy" someone from another club), he would be our player at the point the deal is officially ratified by the EFL. If we were to sign a player on a free this week, he would not become a United player until next week, Tuesday July 1st.

It does give you that image but I think it means more direct in terms of breaking the lines quicker either through or over. If I have that image in my head I think Liverpool.as opposed to Man City. They play the ball quickly through the lines to get it to the likes of Salah or Diaz or sometimes over the top from Alexander Arnold to create a quick counter attack. Obviously we are going to be a poor mans version of but still ...
Bloody Hell, not "think Liverpool" again.

I suppose what goes around, comes around.

So my take is he wants to keep Hamer and play him centrally and have 2 dynamic wingers. Can that be Brooks and one other or 2 new wingers? Great if he can get the quality and change the style so key to see the recruitment.
Big season for Brooks, hes going to get an opportunity to prove himself, let's hope he takes it as he could save us millions

He's not been far off already on his day, just needs a bit more consistency to him. I reckon he can be a regular first choice with the right coaching.

At least two of our AI signings are wingers, whether they are ready or not I do not know but seems that there has been some joined up thinking, which is good to see.

Needs to stop cutting inside instead of taking his man on and crossing it. Not sure whether it was confidence or Wilder telling him to stop doing it but when he is on it he can take anyone on down the winger and put a cross in.

Agreed he has the ability and athletisism and doesn't mind a tackle. His football IQ isn't quite there yet. Needs to learn when to go, when to stay, when to put an early ball in etc as hes sometimes a bit of a headless chicken. That will develop witj time though.

Cracking read mate,eloquently phrased.
I'm more excited than I have been in years.
Feels like we're going to build our own road instead of following some other has beens map🙏

Our country could do with such pioneering spirit😊

Has he said this?

Or is this what you want him to do?

Good interviews. He confirms he decides the transfers (but the options he has are enhanced by AI) which is essentially no real difference to how it worked before but his lists will be much more varied.
