I've been watching past derby games on youtube to get my fix - even the boxing day '79, I was there in the Lepper's Lane.
Back in 2001 derby game at Hillsboro I got a call from a Wendy mate who had a spare ticket in the south stand as his Mrs couldn't make it. There's a small block of about 12 seats right at the end of the stand where we sat, opposite me were many Blades in the north stand
After 70 minutes Asaba scored with a deft header that seemed to go in slow motion past Pressman's finger tips, a Blade in the next block jumped up and was dragged out by stewards, he got a couple of kicks and punches on the way - there were also a couple of boxes full of Blades at the back which drove the Wendy fans mad.
As for me the urge to go mad was hard to deal with but have to say that I bottled it - a sit on your hands moment ;)
We won 2-1 BTW

Lucky you, I was on the kop on Boxing Day, utterly dreadful having to stand up every time they scored & having to try to look happy!

MTLBWY on this Easter Day!

After the strict segregation in 1980s

L**ds away in April 1990. Lost 4-0
Luton (a) in Dec 1990. Won 1-0 (my dad and I cheered Deane's goal anyway)
L**ds away in Oct 1991. Lost 4-3, wanted to leave after we were 4 down but I didnt want to make it too obvious. My heart was beating like mad in the last 10 minutes.
West Ham away in Dec 1991 (my dad and I sat next to Brian Moore and his family). 1-1
Man City away in October 2000

Norwich several times in the 1990s and 2000s

Sat with Liverpool fans for the 2nd leg of the league cup semi and had to clap the Owen (I think) goal as we were knocked out of the competition. Never again.

In recent years;
Grimsby pre-season
Bradford
Sunderland
This season would have been Newcastle,
Burnley and ManUre ☹️

Wolves away in 96 ish. Katchouro scored the winner in the last minute. I'd met a family on holiday, 2 brothers, 1 WBA 1 Wolves. Went with them. 2 fat Wolves fans had a fight on whether Mike Stowell (name? He was the keeper) was shit or not. Great day, but kept quiet. Was sat about 30 seats away from our fans as well

I was on the sty kop too. I did not pretend to be happy.
Anyways, it was a terrace then.
All the best.

Bournemouth away this season - although it seems a LOT longer ago than that!

I was called William Hopper for 90 or so minutes that day......the name on the ticket that I was lucky enough to ‘acquire’.

My seat was near the front of the stand behind the goal, adjacent to the brilliantly loud Blades fans.

It wasn’t difficult staying quiet, as hardly anybody spoke in my stand the entire afternoon, apart from a polite round of applause when the home team scored. Pathetic support.

However, I’ll never know how I managed to stay seated when Billy scored his late equaliser a matter of feet in front of me. Watching the absolute pandemonium on the away end was a joy to behold😊.

As you rightly say it was standing, no less painful though!

Its the memory, it was given blow that day!

We were on the pigs South Stand (at the side of the Blades fans) in 79 when segregation wasn’t what it is nowadays but on the 11th March 1992 two of us were in the pigs North Stand (again at the side of Blades fans) trying to look calm but shitting ourselves that we might get sussed out. We needn’t have bothered. Whitehouse scored early on and 1000+ Unitedites erupted around us. The Wendy fans (in a minority in the 2 end blocks) didn’t like it but were totally outnumbered.
The one time I knew we had to be quiet was on their kop for the Zenith Data game. The elation we felt inside meant we dared not look at each other as even a smile would have given the game away.
Absolute torture

Few years back now, Blue Minx one Friday night, she was rubbing em in my face, never sat on my hands so heavily!!
Exciting times!

Great post and you've got me a bit moist, but I'm not sure you've quite got the hang of this thread.

Me and my lad got a ticket for the Northampton game when we clinched promotion. Was sat in their stand with about 5 blades in front of us(they were on the front row) that we didnt know. For our first goal I stayed seated but when the winner went in I jumped up along with the 5 in front. When I realised it was a bad idea I sat back down but the blokes in front turned around and gave the full stand the rods and everything else, , I swear one bloke offered the entire stand out. I could feel all around turn hostile and then quickly the stewards or coppers took them out.

To be honest I would have rather hve sat on the hill as we could have celebrated at least as all goals were at the end you could see.

01 Feb 1998. Pompey v Sheffield United, FA Cup R4. Cancelled from the previous Saturday because of a waterlogged Fratton Park pitch. Looking like a fixture pile up so it is quickly rescheduled for the Monday night but as ever, it's still pissing down. I arrange to meet my matelot, Blades loving mate Mick Archer on Goldsmith Avenue to go together and stand on the Milton End with the ten or so Unitedites who'd either hardcore driven down or were from the surrounding area. It was also Dave Bassett's first match as United boss, having sacked Billy McKewan in mid January.

So I am stood on Goldsmith, waiting for Mick and it's getting late. I wanted a pint first and an easy saunter into the ground but obviously Mick aint showing. There's a lot of Pompey fans rolling past and I am dressed in my military waterproof combat trousers and bright yellow Sheffield Works Department overtop anorak, donated from my dad. Just then, a Royal Marine mate of mine, Scraggy, comes past. I played regular pub-league football with Scraggy for Eastney Lions, and just last Saturday, because the game was off, we'd played inside Pompey's very own Kingston nick, their own pitch itself waterlogged because it was encased underneath in reinforced concrete to prevent tunnelling. As it was twenty five to eight and kickoff was at quarter to, he stopped, asked me what I was doing and kindly suggested I come into the ground with him, and stand on the Fratton End. This I did, as I expected us to get battered anyway and I was piss wet through now.

So, in the Fratton End and the teams trudge out onto the sodden turf under the sparkly floodlights. As ever, the Fratton End is noisy and full of 'faaaarken-faaaaarken' comments from the mushers as the rain cascaded down still. I was stood at the front to the right of the net and looked down the pitch. here could have been thirty - if that - Unitedites stood on the open end. The only other time I have seen this level of shitness regarding weather was away at Oxford in the nineties.

One minute in and United immediately go on the attack and out of nothing, Tony Philliskirk slides the ball under Alan Knight, off the upright and in, right in front of the bemused Pompey cunts around me. I jump about berating Scraggy and then very quickly realise I am being watched by about five thousand mushers. My reaction is clearly seen on the BBC South Today highlights the next day - some daft fucker in a yellow anorak jumping about in the front of the Fratton End. I stop (because Scraggy tells me to) and start praying we get beaten or my dad's anorak will be full of stab holes. This we do. Later that half Mick Quinn beats Trace to a clearance, helped by the ball visibly getting stuck and gliding on the surface of a pond in the middle of the pitch and some or other shithousery goal dumped us out of the cup and saved my skin. Bassett was dealt with "You'll get the sack again ... Bass-ett ... Bass-ett!" to the tune of the old British Airways theme as he came on with the trainer to see one of our playes who was semi submerged and injured and I trudged home part relieved and part disappointed, this after watching us successfully beat them in the famous last game of the previous season penned in and eventually running for our lives. The video for that game is one YT somewhere.

Read the title wrong, was gonna share my first vindaloo encounter.

It was terracing in 79 not seats

The only time I've been in among the opposition fans was away at Manchester City, in the dreadfully dull game last time we were in the Premier League. It finished 0-0, so no need to fake any reactions.

Never felt the need to 'sit on my hands' watching us. Had a few close ones away at Wolves, Huddersfield, the Sty, Old Trafford, Maine Road etc but to be honest I'd rather get a dig than crawl out feeling like a coward. If I'm going to support my team, then that's what I'm going to do and if not? Might as well stay at home and listen on the fucking wireless 😷😷😷

Done it quite a few times

worst probably Blackburn in 2000 I think it was when we lost 5-0
Best probably beating Liverpool 2-1 while stood on their Kop although in another way that might have been the worst as I couldn’t celebrate and live

My Geordie mate got me a ticket behind the goal at Newcastle during our previous Premier League season. He said 'dont stand up if Sheffield score'. I thought it unlikely as we hadn't scored away all season! Anyway, Sods Law, following a fine diagonal cross and diving header from Danny Webber right in front of me, we score and go 1 nil up.
I immediately jump up in celebration, waving my arms about in ecstacy, just as I get assaulted from behind. I look back and there appears to be 50,000 6ft black and white striped Geordies baying for my blood. Police and St Johns come running over and ask if I am alright and do I want to, surprisingly, join up with the away fans.( surprised I wasn't kicked out). I told them I would stay and received abuse and clips for the remainder of the game. Fortunately, they partially forgot me for a while whilst abusing their Board. I got out alive after a fine 3 points.

Unfortunately I was on their kop also in '79, stood with a Pig mate (no seating back then) & it was my worse ever experience watching United (well the Givens penalty v Walsall was pretty bad as well). I remember wearing a white zip up jacket with red & blue stripes down the sleeves & insisted on wearing my red & white scarf underneath, albeit covered under the zip, & I was getting so wound up by what I was seeing on the pitch & as the third goal went in I heard one of their lot say "I can't see any of their lot on the kop, wankers" nearby, & in a moment of madness unzipped my top to show my scarf & said "go fuck yourself" or something like that. Now let me qualify that I was no hard man with no fear, but I was just so pissed off I didn't care. Anyway, other than a brief struggle no blows were landed by anyone & I stayed to the end. Funny thing was that walking out of the ground & up Parkside Rd the Wendies were getting loads of stick from the Blades held on the other side of the road by the police, including me as they presumed I was one, I unzipped my top & waved my scarf to a huge cheer. It was the first time I had smiled since kick off!

That huge stand at Crewe when Ben Doane scores that screamer it wasn’t really sitting on hands moment because I jumped up in pure shock it couldn’t be helped nothing happened the Crewe fans were quite hospitable actually

2 more standing up ones
  • on the Gallowgate, Newcastle boxing day 1971, like the Geordies we were wearing crombie overcoats, doc Martens etc. David Ford scored and it all kicked off - any one who remembers Newcastle fans then will know what I mean
  • Birmingham City 1975 a night game when we were trying to get into Europe
