sander Berge

A lot of his issues were down to mentality. He'd have games where he was bullied and ineffectual, but when he was confident he realised he was bigger, stronger, faster and simply better than the opposition and would boss it. It's a shame it didn't happen enough.

He always looked a little awkward on the right in a midfield 3 but when he was in a 2 with MGW he was sublime.

It's crazy that a couple of years ago we had Berge, Ndiaye and MGW in the same team and still couldn't win promotion. Most premier league teams would be happy with one of them, we had all three at once!

It’s been pointed out on here many times on many threads that Sander is very quick. His lethargic gangly running style doesn’t make him look quick but if you really pay attention you can see how quick he is. But no matter how many times it’s pointed out or links like you have provided proving he’s very quick someone will always be along on these threads to post that he is slow.
He is very tall with a broad physique and it can take him longer to unwind and get into his stride, but over distance he was really rapid. Particularly for someone carrying the ball he still outpaces defenders. I remember the same with Brian Deane, you never realised how genuinely quick he was until he had space to chase down a ball over distance. Even when Berge was not playing that well, he would still make 3 or 4 lung busting sprints with the ball, while holding off defenders, often gaining us 30-40 yards on the pitch. I think it is really underestimated how much this can take out of player and yet he would still be making these runs late into the game. The stats always showed the amount of ground he covered each game. My disappointment with Berge, was that his cross or final ball rarely led to an assist in these situations , but it was never to do with his workrate or athleticism.

When berge played for us he stood out as a man mountain, for fulham he just looked normal size, this shows the difference in physicality between the leagues. Unless we get some real physical specimins who can play abit we will struggle if we go up

If we go up, then unless we start the season with a full squad of 25 broadly equivalent to Everton, West Ham, Man United or Spurs, (see current league table), we will struggle. I think it’s safe to say whoever goes up is going to struggle next season.

Really interesting read in the interview. Berge always comes across as a real hardworking professional. Good explanation of his own admission of gaps in his game - aggression, not winning duels etc. Also notable how there’s a mention of his discipline and attention to coaches’ detail in there: I still think some of the criticism he came in for from fans was actually down to him following exactly the instructions he was given on his role through the game.

Most of the criticism Berge received was from imbeciles who fundamentally don’t understand football.

Baller.
