Odd to be focusing on Berge today.

Egan, Norwood, Stevens all far, far worse.

And to be honest, Wilder had a stinker today too. He needs to abandon that strike partnership.

Don't think he should've started over Lunny, tbh. We had worse performers today, though. I'd be tempted to drop Norwood and play Berge in a deeper role against Man Utd. Europe looks unlikely atm, so might as well experiment a bit

£22million......................joke.

This might sound OTT but wonder if Norwood is playing poorly because of Berge being in the team.

At least Norwood offers the occasional set piece or threatening long ball.

I see what you are saying though. The same three has played together for over half a season and we’ve been so good. Someone coming in who might not be quite sure of his role is bound to have an effect on the rest of the team.

I don’t think that was the reason Norwood was below par today though. He’s had an absolute stinker and that’s completely down to him.

His control was awful, he continually underhit simple passes straight to the opposition and couldn't tackle to save his life.

It was his mis control when he was played in that had me fuming, regardless of who it was shouldn't happen even in League 2.

To be clear don't want this a scapegoating thing but critical analysis. Wilder, for as much as we love him, has made an error in playing him.

That's another cunt that offered nowt today!

Right, Berge was fine today, although Egan was as well - if it wasn't for the ref doing their usual bottle job of just booking both players in those sorts of handbags spots regardless of what each player has actually done (in Egan's case, nothing), he stays on and cuts out their first

Have to agree to disagree.

Egan was run ragged by Villa's big lad Davis in the week. Today he struggled again. He can be quite slow & the ball over the top often catches him out. He's looked rusty since coming back in my opinion & I wasn't surprised to see him red carded today.

Enda Stevens & Oli Norwood put in their worst ever performances in a Blades shirt though. Deary me.

The fact that it’s become an argument between Berge or Lunny is the problem.
We thought he was coming in as an option/alternative to Norwood, but he’s been shoe-horned into RCM because of his price tag and because Lunny won’t sign a contract.
It should be a discussion between Norwood/Berge and Lundstram/Freeman.
All the while we’ve let Besic go back to Everton who slotted in seamlessly when he played and offered contributions in both attack and defence.
Wilder’s got a blind spot on this one and it’s a concern.

What! Berge was on anther fuckin planet absolute liability.
Should have been replaced after 20 mins

I know its not his natural position but Berge is too immobile and slow, to play wide.

In fact, based on his performances there, I wouldn’t be surprised to find out his middle name is ‘Ice’ 😉

When he joined us Paul Coutts was slated for being, immobile, lazy and slow in both his passing, pressing, and general work rate. He went on to prove us all wrong and showed his real class in a confident team.

Berge has got to do exactly the same next season. He HAS to up every aspect of his game and be the player we hoped that CW had signed.

If not we have a £25millon 'flop' on our hands and can expect little in return.

Come on CW and AK. Do your stuff.

UTB

Berge just looks slow and a bit of a pussy to be honest... Looks OK on the ball but seriously needs to toughen up

Maybe Wilder should play him in his natural position, like he did with Coutts.

He's a big lad who desperately needs to show a bit of aggression and bully people a bit more, for years we've had a midfield of midgets and he's the sort of unit we've been after for ages but isn't repaying his price tag at the moment. That's unless he replaces Norwood and we see what he's capable of in that position

I'd suggest playing him in Norwood's place at Man U but Norwood will have to play for sentimental reasons won't he, like Lunny did at Liverpool.

I'd suggest one thing in particular to Sander - play with aggression.

And Coutts benefited from playing with an extra midfielder to remove the burden of mobility, work rate and pressing. When he was in a two he was guilty of most things he was accused of because he wasn’t as fit as maybe he once was. (to the original post that you replied to)

Ive not seen Berge play in his natural position. Would you say that is an option for us? And would we try and keep Norwood in the team too - ie swap them round?

You’re talking about Norwood.

Berge today actually did OK - he linked up with Baldock better than he has done before, his passing was largely accurate (with some obvious poor ones like the one that went straight out for a throw)
He also won headers and tackles.

Yes he wasn’t amazing but hes playing out of position.

One thing I do think he needs to improve is his urgency/speed of pass - where we are best is when we’re moving the ball through the thirds in those neat triangles at pace, he does take too long to pass.

But today is not one for slating Berge. Those that are choosing to single out Berge after today either i) don’t understand football or ii) have an agenda against Berge for whatever reason.

The lads come over from a league were he was given time and was able to flourish

He is a new country/ more physical league and being asked to play out of postion

Give him time to adapt

Far and away our best player today. Really tidy, kept thing ticking - one and two touch. The biggest issue with him is he doesn't understand the movement patterns, so rarely gets goal side of his marker. Looked really classy today, though, he played with a cigar on. Bash did ok. Apart from Bash and Berge we were dog meat.

Bash was our best player by far - but Berge was decent - we looked ok and were actually well in the game before the sending off and then the absolute capitulation.
Never looked like scoring though, we didn’t get the ball in the box anywhere near enough times.

People slagging of McBurnie - how many times did we give him the ball in a decent position??

Berge:

Settling into the “organised chaos system“ mid way through a season.
Joined from a league in which some teams would struggle to compete with Norwich.
Joined from a team that dominates possession.
Placed in a unfamiliar role.
Not played competitively for months.

He didn’t pay 20 odd million for himself, and being extremely generous, their are 8 or 9 others that don’t share all of the above realisms and were awful today. He just needs time, honestly playing him in the Lundstram role could cause more harm (confusion) than good.

I wouldn't go as far as you, but it was a marked improvement. Far more involved, nice & tidy & tried a bit harder to get involved with our attacks.

I thought Basham was our MOTM. Probably the only player to reach a 7/10. Berge & Baldock 6/10.

The rest were poor.

He was better than Norwood today, so he should start in his preferred role next time out.
