Outgoing? SANDER BERGE ON WAY OUT ?

God there's some weird views on this thread!

I completely agree Berge didn't live up to his reputation or transfer fee with us however there's some blatantly obvious reasons why.

Firstly he was basically a JVW signing just like Verrips. The difference being that Verrips was signed for a small fee and had Dean Henderson in front of him so CW not playing him didn't really make much difference.

The same can't be said of Berge. We had chased him since the previous transfer window and finally got him for a club record fee. There was absolutely no way CW could get away with not playing him so had to try and shoehorn him into our formation, which so obviously didn't suit him it's unreal.

IMHO if you stuck Berge in his best position, ie as part of a 2 in a 4231 formation with ball winner next to him, then he would fit into the vast majority of the teams in the PL quite easily.

I think the injury might have scuppered Berge's big plans for himself. I just don't see anybody coughing up that sort of money. Having said that, I don't think it'll take £35m to get him out of the club. If we can get £27m(ish) I think we'd sell. The club have said we need to balance the books and he's our most obvious asset to flog.

Assuming this is partly (at least) aimed at me, you’ll be surprised to find I agree with your assessment for the reasons why it hasn’t yet worked out for him.

I haven’t written Berge off. The only notion I’m challanging is that we should expect to make a profit on him, based on what’s been on show.

Given the wheeling and dealing I think we’ll be forced to do, the valuation of our prized asset is an important talking point, hence the thread. Sadly, I think his performances for us will detract from what we paid, not add to it.

Cause or effect?
your answers too cryptic for me, my comment relates to not keeping possession because the entire team were so poor & not even top top player can have much effect on that. Therefore its unfair to just blurt out "Berge is crap".

Cause or effect - how much did Berge contribute to the fact that our midfield couldn’t hold the ball - given that he was a third of it, and the star man at that? It seems very convenient to forgive him and blame the others.

“Therefore its unfair to just blurt out "Berge is crap". - I suggest you address that to anyone making that point. ;)

Kante helped make Danny Drinkwater an England player and a very rich lad.

Leicester nearly got relegated the year before they signed him. Oh to have found a duplicate of him
Yeah true he did help though it wasn't his feet inside Drinkwater's boots providing those long passes for Vardy. All about the team innit

entire team couldn't keep possession not just midfield. Berge would look solid in a decent team £35 million doesn't buy you the best. I don't think we'll get that either but there's also an awful lot of players who cost more and do not stand out for their teams. Love to see him in a successful Blades side & then be able to judge his potential.

no very doubtful we will get 35m now however i wouldnt sell for anything less than 25m and if nobody comes up with that figure he stays and we build the team round him and in a formation that suits his best qualities 532 wasnt it

KMC is no longer our chairman and the days of Beattie flu and Maguire sunburn have hopefully gone for good.

If SJ decides it's worth cashing in on Berge then it should at least be a break even figure given that we are already short in midfield to begin with and can rebuild with the fee.

The best bet might be some sort of player swap deal + cash with one of the bigger clubs.

i think thats the most likely outcome possibly something like 20m plus a player and that could be a good deal for us if its a player slav wants

A sale and pick of loans may be even more attractive for next season especially if he heads to Liverpool or Arsenal.

It wasn't aimed at anyone in particular mate.

I personally think the relegation clause figure is cloud cuckoo land territory but players are worth whatever the buying club are prepared to pay and we've seen time and time again PL teams overpaying especially if there's more than one team in the mix.

IMO if we get a bid of £25m plus, and Slav's happy, then we'll sell and reinvest and if we don't then he stays and we build a team round him.

If the highest offer for Berge was £15m, and we needed to raise £15m, who else do you think we should sell to raise that money?

At 81.9% Berge has the best pass completion rate of any of our midfielders. He was behind only Egan (84.6%) in the entire squad and just outside the top 100 in the division (source: fbref.com). He's therefore arguably less to blame than anyone else.

Depends who else there's offers for. If I'm honest I'd take £15m for pretty much anyone else in the squad but I would imagine that the most likely would be Egan (I'd sell Egan over Berge), Baldock (I'd sell Baldock over Berge), Bogle (50/50) and Ramsdale (that's a tricky one).

If the highest offer was £15 million then I would want a player in part ex or a loan of a fringe player from the buyer. Subject to SJ approval.

Either that or I would sell Egan for £15 million and get a new CB either on loan or perm.

We wont get near £15m for Egan, IMO.

We need numbers and quality coming into the midfield even without selling Berge. A decent starting midfielder in their prime is going to cost us £15 - 20m. I can't see the logic of selling Berge unless we get a lot more than that. I wouldn't budge for under £30m. He can always prove himself between now and Christmas if we can't get that sort of money now because of concern about his injury. If it looks like we could bounce straight back up we could always then just keep him.

although i think berge will be sold i would like us to build a team round him we could well be in a great position come january if not let him go then

If we're walking the league in Jan and he's enjoying Slavs style he may choose to stay

Arsenal are selling Xhaka for 17 mill who is absolutely garbage so they can bollocks if they think they can have Sander for that
And he's 29 I'm November so no resale value when his next contract finishes.

They need a couple of midfielders, Arsenal. If they needed Buendia before and are selling Chaka I'd say it's 2 in they want.

If Arsenal are after Ben White, Bissouma and Neves as is being reported this morning that would completely clear out their transfer kitty you’d imagine so a move for Berge would be unlikely if they pull those off. Although it could be a case of Ben White plus one of Berge/Bissouma/Neves.

I'd be very surprised if Brighton let both White and Bissouma go. Possibly one, if they agitate for a move but selling both would rip out their spine and make them very vulnerable for relegation next season.

You’d think so but stranger things have happened in football. There’s been a lot of noise around Neves this last week so I’d assume he’s their too target.

Big article in The Athletic today about Arsenal's midfield. Oestergaad is not signing and there's a chance Xahava leaves so talking about targets. Berge doesn't even get mentioned.

I'm wondering whether he may still be here next season, at least until Xmas, so potential buyers can assess his recovery from injury. If we stick to our guns re price it's a he'll of a lot for someone who had a very serious injury.

Blimey, they're selling Xhaka, Chaka and Xahava
