Big article in The Athletic today about Arsenal's midfield. Oestergaad is not signing and there's a chance Xahava leaves so talking about targets. Berge doesn't even get mentioned.

I'm wondering whether he may still be here next season, at least until Xmas, so potential buyers can assess his recovery from injury. If we stick to our guns re price it's a he'll of a lot for someone who had a very serious injury.

Don't disagree with anything you've said FB although I suspect Berge may well move on over summer - I wouldn't be surprised if Liverpool made a move. Isn't his injury simular to the one Kane suffered - it doesn't seem to have affected his value too much?

Correct, nobody will want to touch him till he proves his fitness, could be here till the end of next season unless somebodys willing to gamble.

Not sure MoS but detaching your hamstring tendon from the pelvis is a serious injury. We don't know Kanes value yet as he's not been transferred but clubs will always take a.chance on a goalscorer.

I'd love usnto get 35m but I can't see that happeneing until he's proved he's over the injury. The fact he came back for us and then was injured again won't have helped

if we dont get an offer that suits us keep him till january at least we could be in a position in the league that gives us a great chance of going back up and he might want to stay here

Sheffield United could be forced to accept Arsenal's proposed deal for Norwegian midfielder Sander Berge. The 23-year-old has said he hopes to play Champions League football next season. (Sheffield Star)

The Sheffield Star there, claiming we'll be forced to accept Arsenal's bid as Berge wants Champions League football.

What are Arsenal going to do about that? Loan him to Wolfsburg?

That right there is a piece of quality journalism.

Think I might apply for a job at The Star. I have no journalistic experience whatsoever, but I can 'make unqualified shit up' just like anyone else.
It literally is 'money for old rope'. I might even get lucky and become the new Wednesday Correspondent!
I'll just start every article with "Trouble is brewing at S6 as..."

If James Shield typifies the calibre of staff desired by The Star, you'll undoubtedly be vastly overqualified FZ, assuming you can count to 10 and tie your own shoe laces.

The demise of what was once a decent publication, as well as that of the once, must-read, Green-Un is a truly sorry tale. From a sport perspective it adds absolutely nothing to what else is out there in terms of media offerings - I no longer even think of looking at it due to its rehashed articles, low quality employees and atrocious website which is littered with ads. In fact, IMHO the sooner it is put out of its misery and James Shield is released to do something he's better at (suggestions welcome!), the better.

I'd love to know how many subscribers they have to their £50/annum service. Most will be the gullible sort that respond to emails emanating from Nigeria regarding lottery win and lost fortunes.

If Arsenal are interested then Chambers should be in the deal. They’re looking at spunking £50m on White (great buy btw), which means Chambers appearances are going to be even more limited and he’d be one of the best centre halves in the Championship and has proven he can perform at PL level.
He’s 26, and his current deal expires at the end of the season so as long as they don’t try as over value him he would be an excellent addition for us. He also fits SJ vision of how he likes his centre backs to be able to play and he was the manager when Fulham took him on loan.

oh yeah forgot about slav having him at fulham perfect in either a 433 or 343 set up plus he can also fill in as the defensive midfielder like the idea with this one 👍

The Star rejected me when I applied for a reporter’s job there in 1974.
I ended up 10 years at the Independent and 20 years at the Guardian, which helped to soften the blow.

We're not forced to do anything. He's our player, under contact at our club. If the release clause is met then so be it but we dont need to be forced in accepting Arsenal's transfer offer which will more than likely be sh*t as the top 6 think football revolves around them

Some might say that’s cheap for white as it’s what Brighton quoted Leeds and Chelsea last summer off the back of a decent loan season in the champ. He’s since had a year in the prem and made an England squad so there’s a reasonable argument to be made he’s more valuable. This is why I think some of our fans are very conservative in their valuations the market has truly run wild even compared to as little as 5 years ago.

He’s 23 so if a top club get him you could have one of England’s top centre backs for the next 10 years for a fee of £5m per season. Compare that to what Man United had to pay for Mcguire and Harry was 3 years older and nowhere near as good technically.

still think egans valuation should be 20m minimum

Well said I said same bloody Arsenal didn't even qualify for Europe did they? mind you that's the Stir the paper that's full of printed diarrhoea.

Yeah I’m not saying he’s not worth that in the current market just that the market has jumped significantly. I would say since the neymar transfer but also the fees villa were paying for championship players last year pushed it up domestically as well.

I think that could be classed as a sliding doors moment (and a lucky escape!!) NB

Just think, instead of a career at at two of the Fleet Street majors and living in one of the more picturesque parts of the country (I'm only about 20 mins away) you could instead be spending your days rehashing old news in order to fill column inches, whilst being paid twopence hapenny (anymore than that and James Shield is being vastly overpaid!).

The star still thinks McSues in charge.

On what basis does he want Champions League Football?

Same basis as me still hoping that Jennifer Aniston gives me a bell on the off chance?

We can talk about potential until the cows come home but his win / loss ratio with us is pretty unspectacular.

He had a couple of decent games but he hasn't a strong enough body of work to suggest he's a shoo in for a top 4 team. Yes he could get Champions League football but, quite frankly, to do so it would be a lesser team in France, Belgium, Greece, Italy that would take him and for nowhere near what we want for him.

We paid 22m for potential. He's shown potential but not yet consistency. He's now a player who is settled in England who has potential and some PL experience. That creates a case to push for in excess of what we paid.

So we don't let him go on the cheap. But it can hardly be the player calling the shots that he'd like to play for xy team, and I'm not saying he is, but he's got to have achieved a lot more to be in that position.

You bid for him, you're paying for a player who has now acclimatised, who has shown flashes of actual ability but there is still a lot based on potential.

Yes it's shit for him that we got relegated but he was part of the team that got relegated and part of the first choice midfield that didn't manage a single goal from open play between them. (I'm counting Fleck, Norwood, Berge and Lundstram as the first picks btw). Part of me thinks of those who may glance at the exit door "you got us in this shit, you get us out of it!"

Question is when does the bubble pop, surely we must be close or are we eventually going to see players being bought for 1 billion in the future..

I don’t think we’re anywhere near the bubble popping transfer fees at the top will continue to climb imo as billionaires and states continue to artificially inflate the market and clubs have signalled their desire to increase earnings rather than curb outgoings with plans like the super league which hasn’t gone anywhere. It would probably be more accurate to say that the foundations of the game are on the verge of collapse straining under the weight of the big sides. I think we’re fairly close to breaking point in that regard but that won’t be of any concern to those spending mega money at the top.

Allegedly SSC Napoli are interested in a “Loan-to-Buy”.
Would make zero sense for United. If he’s to leave we need cash as much upfront as possible to rebuild. If he’s to be loaned it need to be with a view to him returning if we were to be promoted like Fulham did with some of their players. Loan to buy is a worst case we don’t get the money we need to rebuild in the short term but still lose our asset. I’d hope that was a very short conversation with Napoli.

No loans. His value will plummet if he continues to play as he has for us thus far.
