Sounds like we're sacking Wilder to appoint Rubén Sellés. Whats your verdict on that?

Bonus question:
In your time watching United which managerial appointment got the worst reaction from you on the day it was announced?
If your answer is "Danny Wilson because he's a pig", then try and provide a 2nd answer too.

1. Danny Wilson
2. Bryan Robson
3. Micky Adams
Interestingly all 3 of those managers had achieved promotion the Premier League as a feature on their CV. I'll be honest I was OK with the Robson appointment at the time, but he really was terrible for us. I didn't want Wilson either and went to the car park, but we certainly have had worse than him too. Micky Adams did feel like a tinpot managerial appointment I agree.

Wasn't my first choice, but I think it puts us on a better course

Bonus: Heckingbottom. Felt like we'd just given up as a club (but he ended up being great)

I wasn't thrilled with Heckingbottom but that was partly due to the insanely long FIVE YEAR contract we'd given him, and the way the board addressed the fans quite disrespectfully.

Unsure, but let's just get on with it.

I will miss Wilder, but I also liked the look of Selles' Hull team.

Hopefully we get an attacking brand of football and the results to go with it.

I was genuinely over the moon for Wilder. Id seen the YouTube videos of him calling out the Northampton owner that season, knew he was a Blade and thought that's exactly what we needed. Was delighted we got him.

But I was buzzing for Adkins as well, so I’m 50/50 at best 🥴

Bryan Robson for me.

The incredulity at Wilson was pathetic, some of the most cringeworthy behaviour I’ve seen exhibited by our fans.

Bizarrely I was pissed off when we sacked Adkins because I was convinced we’d appoint another shit manager and thought it was a waste of money paying another one off.

I knew Bryan Robson was going to be bad.
I was hopeful about David Weir - big disappointment.
Was hopeful about Micky Adam’s. WTF.
Still can’t understand why Nigel Clough could sometimes be really good (like in cup matches), and at other times be very disappointing.
Wilder, come on everyone, we had some good times with him, but…

Always though Robson was shocker of an appointment and was proved right. Like many others thought Nigel Adkins was an excellent choice. We know the rest

Jimmy Sirrell - oh dear
Billy Mac - oh dear

Thought we’d got back on the right pathway with Harry H , but - oh dear

Danny was unlucky , Hecky was immense , Robson was - oh dear
Hecky was unlucky. It was the sheer magnitude of some of the defeats and the lack of cash that left the Prince feeling it was his only option, but then again we took plenty of pastings when Wilder took over.

That Newcastle game was still very frustrating. Never should have gone ahead but I won’t repeat myself about all their first half goals. But conceding eight at home was beyond the pale.

The Spurs one was the real killer. From the sublime to the ridiculous at times with the added time mantra.

I do wonder how we’d be doing if we had just ridden it out with Hecky.

Ironically he was always more interested in the coaching aspect. He’d have probably welcomed this new approach with open arms.

Sellés has plenty of experience in different countries so I wouldn’t say it’s a given the likes of Gus or Souza will be off. They may warm to him more than a more traditional Wilder.

No point looking back now. I’m sure there will be a thread on best Wilder memories or funny moments but can’t undo what’s done. Need to get behind the new guy. He has inherited a good squad with minimal additions required. Let’s let him get on with it.

My reaction

December 1973 Ken Furphy - Found it hard to imagine John Harris was no longer the manager but my dad spoke highly of Furphy

October 1975 Jimmy Sirrel - Was surprised at the appointment as he was "Mr Notts County" and I was baffled that he insisted on working at Notts County on a month's notice which lasted just a week as the directors told him that he can go. My dad thought "good appointment"

January 1978 Harry Haslam - Was surprised because he did turn down the chance of becoming our manager some weeks earlier but then decided to join us after the 0-5, 1-5 and 1-5 successive defeats. Again, my dad thought "good appointment".

January 1981 Martin Peters - I was excited and thought he was the manager to bring us success despite that I wasnt a regular for home games due to playing football on Saturday afternoons! How wrong was I!

Summer 1981 Ian Porterfield - Impressed that we got a manager who led his team to win the 3rd division persuading him to leave a 2nd division club to join a 4th division club but thought the 10 year contract was excessive.

March 1986 Billy McEwan - I hardly knew him but my dad heard from one or two of the staff at the club that Billy is enthusiastic, strong on discipline and full of ideas.

January 1988 Dave Bassett - Didnt want him because of his long ball reputation but then I started to love him in 1988-89 and I returned to become a regular at the Lane and started going to away matches again.

December 1995 Howard Kendall - I wanted Neil Warnock and I wasnt convinced that Kendall would change the style of our football with success but he did despite ending in a big disappointment at Wembley.

Summer 1998 Steve Bruce - I was excited and thought he was going to bring in quality players.

Summer 1999 Adrian Heath - I remember watching BBC Look North of him being unveiled as our new manager in front of a virtually empty BDTBL with just Lisa Clarke and her mum giving him a welcome and holding their scarves above their heads. It felt all low key!

December 1999 Neil Warnock - I did want him a few years earlier but wasnt sure this time because his managerial rating for me had dropped down as he was Bury's manager at the time.

Summer 2007 Bryan Robson - I was very horrified but an Academy coach at SUFC who worked with me also a well known figure at the SUFC office staff spoke highly of Robson and both were saying that they are confident of us going up! They were wrong and I was right

February 2008 Kevin Blackwell - I thought "sensible appointment"

August 2010 Gary Speed - Wasnt sure

December 2010 Micky Adams - I thought "Good appointment"

Summer 2011 Danny Wilson - I agreed with the appointment as he did well at Barnsley and Wendy but was let down by Di Canio and Carbone's "player power". I was annoyed with the stupid car park protest just because of Danny's Wendy's connections.

Summer 2013 David Weir - I didnt agree with the appointment as he had no managerial experience.

October 2013 Nigel Clough - I wasnt sure

Summer 2015 Nigel Adkins - I thought "Good appointment!"

Summer 2016 Chris Wilder - I took interest in what he was doing as a football manager and I thought "One day he will manage us!" and I told my son that. I was delighted at the appointment.

Summer 2021 Slaviša Jokanović - I thought it was a brave decision that we appointed a foreign manager for the first time.

November 2021 Paul Heckingbottom - I thought "cheap option"

December 2023 Chris Wilder - I am a strong believer of "Never go back"

A mixture of "I was right" and "I was wrong"

Changes since I took a real interest

I'm very unsure. It may work but time will tell. The board can't afford to fuck it up.
