Not signing another right footed centre half was a shit decision at the time and it’s a worse one now

Why is your solution to just keep signing more players? You know we can only declare 25 right?

We’ve got 3 long term injured fucking players in the 25 for a start 😂😂

Also not ‘more’ players. Just a few good ones will do.

Which apparently we had to declare as part of the 25.

You only have to do that if you don’t have enough players to fill out the 25. If you have more than that, they don’t all need to be included. See Harry Arter off the very top of my head.

And most goals conceded from unmarked players scoring.

Hecky needs to drop Anel or Egan going forward. They're a calamitous duo and have been at fault for the majority of goals we've conceded this season. We can't keep playing them.

Drop the three at the back and go with two.
What? You can’t be serious.

You wanna go 4 at the back, you didn’t see the time we had 4 at the back today before we had Basham on?

Sorry but unless you were very drunk I don’t respect your knowledge or opinion of football if you came away from that match thinking we should go 4 at the back.

Bizarre.

Until the opposition get an attacking set piece and casually nod it into the back of our net like they did for goal number 2 and 3.

None of that had anything to do with our press.. just garbage defending.

Basically ur saying sit back and wait for them to score....

Set pieces are a problem, and already we're having to make compromises (taking Bogle off, rather than a centre half when we went to a back four) to help deal with set pieces.

But we have to evaluate how our general approach to the game works. It was like a 5-2-2-1 today, as Hecky confirmed we wanted an open game. Hamer and McAtee tried to help Archer. But that front three struggled to apply a strong enough pressure on their defence. They comfortably found someone in midfield, where Norwood and Souza then tried to close down. But they're not quick/mobile enough to do that and Newcastle regularly found space behind them. Then we chased back in panic. This is so exhausting! It takes too much energy out of us, we never get comfortable and also affects our attacking play. Time and time again this happened and the pressure lead to the situations from which they scored.

If we can't make it work with high pressing, regularly getting ourselves in trouble, we need to change it, even when 1-0 down. Today's line up lacked the attributes to carry out those tactics.

More tempting to go to 6 at the back, based on today...

Have you noticed anything different with the 3 CBs, especially with the distance between them? They look completely disconnected and Ahmedhodzic seems to be wandering off constantly

When the entire midfield goes awol they are asked to break out of their defensive line and close down opposition players who have found space behind our midfield. Today they often struggled to get a challenge in, and looked, and were, all over the place as a result.

Certainly seemed naieve to make it such an open game

What do you make of Egan so far? He’s looked off the pace in every game I’ve seen. And it goes without saying that today he was horrific. Wilson was in 5 yards of space all game.

I hope it’s just form, but I’m worried another of our stalwarts has just gone over a cliff edge.

Agree he's struggling and think it's a shame we didn't prioritise bringing in a strong right footed centre half this summer.

Egan's early season form isn't untypical from what I can recall. Apart from the first PL season he has generally been a bit all over the place for the first few games, and then sorts himself out and becomes pretty solid.

Whether this can be attributed to the same remains to be seen, but he really does seem completely out of sorts, as does Anel.

No panic just yet, but I think most of us felt that the defence was probably the most sold area of the team before the season started. As Hecky said post match, we have had to do a lot of defending so far, so it isn't all bad, but something ain't working with that back 3 at the moment.

Back 3 still works, Egan looks void of confidence, bench him for a bit to get him out the spotlight. I'd go Trusty Anel Robbo.

Not sure on a back 2, unless it was with Robbo at left back? Then maybe Bash sitting CDM next to Souza.

But, today was dreadful, no player can hold their head high. Looked like we just called quits the minute the second goal went in, heads dropped...
Trusty is L-footed.

Hecky hasn't helped matters by appointing Egan as full time captain. A captain should lead by example and Egan goes AWOL. A captain in name only.
I feel this is harsh and very recency biased, however I’m going to put it out there:

When your Captain goes off to play for his Country knowing he is injured and then subsequently misses the next game, what message does that send?

Does it tell you the club is top priority and that “you’ve got to die to get three points?”

Or does it send a signal that the club that pays your wages is not top priority?

Egan wasn’t in good form. He owed it to his manager to get as fit as possible so he could play at 100%. He went to Ireland, either picked up a new injury or aggravated the current one. It meant we were short reinforcements at Spurs and it meant he was coming in cold for Newcastle.

I like Egan as a person and I like him as a player and he’s contributed to our success.

But, if you are Club Captain you need to be making better decisions. I’m not for one minute suggesting he turns his back on Ireland, but if he wouldn’t have been deemed fit to play for SUFC by our Medical Staff, he should not have gone to Ireland and then played.

I’ve never been that sold on Egan. Defensively he’s fine but the rest of his game is poor. This season he’s been awful which isn’t great. Anel has also been garbage this season.

Defensive coach has taken a fairly solid defence and made it worse in my opinion.
Egan wasn’t great last or the previous season
We looked more solid central without him

It may be that it was considered fine for Ireland but then unexpectedly aggregated it?

Norwood took the decision to retire from int games though not suggesting he does that.

Can't remember many times Egan hasn't played last few seasons.

They are finding PL forwards tough to deal with.

An example of our high pressure achieving nothing, meaning Newcastle's centre half passes up to Wilson. Egan breaks out of defence, but can't win the ball. It falls to a Newcastle player and Ahmedhodzic has to defend on his own against Gordon and ends up getting his yellow card. So two situations where two of our centre halves are being forced to defend individually against very good opponents and struggle.

To be fair to Hudson I don't think this is his way of setting us up. The game plan of today was to press high and it meant our centre halves had to do a lot of individual defending like above. They are not excellent at it.
