If he'd been playing for Brazil he'd have got a penalty for that

I really hope Argentina win for our Alex's sake.

There is something that I can't quite weigh up about him on the touchline, falling over apart, though. He doesn't look authoritative or decisive, more bewildered and wondering quite where he is and why he's there..He isn't universally popular in Argentina. I heard on the radio the other day that there's a view amongst Argentinian pundits that his strategy is to ask Messi what to do.

I can't understand why people aren't getting more excited about this ... when was the last time a Sheffield United player went on to manage World Cup finalists? (Answer: never.) In fact how many managers of World Cup finalists played for any English club? Er, Alf Ramsey. I'm very proud of our link with Alex Sabella and I am surprised more has not been made of it in the media generally.

Jack Charlton unfortunatly :(

*edit just reread it, you asked for managers of world cup finalist so we can leave the piggy out

It's a shame he got the job just before he was due to come back in that pre season game. Suspect if there was a more recent connection it would be a bigger deal but the media think football started sometime in the 90's!

On the coverage last night as the Argentinians were celebrating, the camera foucused on Sabella and the commentator said "and there is Alex Sabella, once of Sheffield United..." and then went and spoiled it by saying "..and Leeds United".

We have Martin Peters anyway :)

If Argentina win I reckon that will make us the only English club to have both a world cup winning manager and a world cup final scorer who played for them.

Ron Greenwood played for Brentford, Fulham and Chelsea.

I meant finalists as in reaching the final (and I think they will win it as well).
Had forgotten Martin Peters, who of course was "Peters and me" with Haslam who brought Sabella to the Lane so there is a link.
Sadly, Peters was "20 years ahead of his time" when England won the World Cup, and 20 years after his time when he played for us.

George Raynor was on our books in the 1930-31 season (he can be seen in the 1930-31 squad photo in "The First 100 Years" book by Denis Clareborough, played one County Cup game for us. He managed Sweden in the 1958 World Cup and they lost in the final to Brazil

Ron Greenwood was the manager of West Ham in 1966 when they won the World Cup.

Now THAT is a stunning piece of detective work!

Raynor was the Roy Hodgson of his time (well, at least before Roy started to get PL gigs) - a great foreign track record but almost unknown in the UK and certainly unrecognised. He was from Hoyland Common and his last managing job at senior level was at Doncaster.

Surely that's the sort of training gear that they should sell in the club shop.
Cravats, snazzy cardi's, polo necks - very swish ;)
