Yup - problem is that “frees” sound appealing when you’re on a budget. But reality is that most good players who find themselves on the free transfer list have engineered this deliberately in order to get a big old chunk o’ cash (see what Ndiaye and Berge are likely doing with us)… so they still end up going to the highest “bidder”, which is rarely us.

His predecessor Enda only came from League 2's Portsmouth. He was named in the EFL team of the season that year and if I remember right he was their fans player of the season as well.

Have you not seen Manning play? He's been one of the best LWB/LBs in Championship for at least two years, also would suit our play nicely.

He's chosen to leave Swansea to find a better club, he's not been cast aside by Swansea.

I disagree with that. He can play anywhere down the left, but he also plays LCB when Swansea play 3 at the back.
As you say, he has been known to operate in midfield, but I don't think that's the position we're signing him for, it's LWB and LCB.

That would give 3 players available for LWB: Lowe, Manning, RND
3 players available for LCB: Robinson, Manning, RND

Can't say I'd given even a moments thought to him playing LCM for us.

But then you'd rather keep Osborn over Fleck

We're going to be top heavy with unconvincing left sided players. There's nowhere near the strength of the right side. Think we need at least one convincing player at LCB or LWB. Is Manning that at Prem level? I doubt it - but that doesn't mean he wouldn't be an excellent signing

Do we know RND will be fit though, equally have we any idea how the injury may impact on him when he does come back? To pin our plans for LWB on a player who’s been out this long and whose prognosis we have no idea about is a risk. Presumably Hecky and the staff will know better so if they think we need a player like Manning I wouldn’t double guess them.

My comment was tongue in cheek about our previous acquisitions from Swansea, rather than any comment about this free agent.
