Player Suggestion Ryan Leonard

We do, like we did with Jack O'Connell.

What you seem to be ignoring is the fact that the player will find out about the interest anyway. If they're going to find out about it then the one thing the club can control is where the information comes from. If the manager tells the player of the interest there can be an immediate discussion. If the player finds out about it from somewhere else the first thing he will think is "Why hasn't my manager told me about this?"

If the player is gong to find out about it anyway there is literally no downside to the info coming from the club itself. There is however a lot of downside to the player finding out from somewhere else.

We could report agents for tapping up, some do get reported. However, what would we then do when we need to use that same agent to tap up a player that we're after?

The downside from the information coming from the club is that the agent and the player think the club is a soft touch. Which is the reputation we had in the market for many years.

A soft touch ??? Wilders fucking ruthless . Sign em, doesn't work out - gone !

This ruthless streak is ( another ) facet of Wilders managerial makeup that I didn't see . Fair play to him for surprising me again .

Why would they think that? I don't think Wilder comes across as being a soft touch at all and i think him being honest with his players is a good thing and one of the reasons why he seems quite respected.

Decent squad player and one that we don’t have a replacement for without shifting basham.

I’d keep him for his versatility on the field. That said he’s not good enough on the ball to be In The middle most games for the way we like to play.

If he’s happy being a sub and coming on in a fair amount of games and a handful of starts we should keep him. If he wants to go it wont be the end of twelve world.

Bash proving he can step up to CM to cover if needed. That might mean Wilder sees the wages we are paying Leonard can go towards the striker we need. Would only be a bad move if we don’t get somebody in.

Yep. Add the fact that Coutts is soon back and the opportunities in centre-mid are looking far less likely. Egan is the default other RCB option too now it seems.

I won’t be overly bothered whether he stays or goes tbh. If his departure is ultimately part of business that will hand us a player more likely to start, it’s probably worthwhile. He has been better of late, but not to the extent I’d be annoyed if we moved him on.

Millwall have immediately turned George Saville from a 500k player to a £5m player.

It would be foolish of us to agree any currently realistic permanent deal in advance for Leonard. We have nothing to gain by doing so.

If anything, he's only going to increase in value between now and January.

If he takes Saville's place, plays like he did against Norwich and scores a few goals, he'll be in the £2.5-3m bracket - at least in Millwall's eyes.

So if he's to go then I hope there's no permanent commitment. It's well worth seeing if he can increase in value.

Also, the Saville deal isn't entirely dependent on him going to Millwall. Their paper is reporting they have 2 other targets.

Leonard to Millwall... Saville to Middlesbrough... Johnson to us

Not sure if I'd rather have Leonard or Johnson, still think Leonard has the potential to be a very good player at this level.

Two threads on the same subject for Lenny, very impressive! Of all the clubs he could have gone on loan to it has to poxy Millwall (no love lost between them and us). Anyway if he goes then I reckon he will play a lot more than he does now, and even though I want him to do well I just wish it wasn't with those gits.

Can't stand Millwall either Roots! Shame he's not played much here. Alongwith Holmes, he can count himself a tad unfortunate to not feature more, but guessing Wilder would say that they haven't done enough to play more. I obviously trust Wilder but I think Leonard could do well if played more.

I'm fairly sure that Sky said it was loan with a permanent to be done in January - like we have done with Norwood.

Ironically at a time when he starting to show what he`s all about.

Did well at Norwich on his debut last season, but struggled after that, including a horror show at Hull live on Sky.

Came on at Qpr earlier this month, and had a great cameo, then an excellent half after replacing Ben Woodburn v Norwich in our last home game, at the break.

Paul Coutts is 3-4 weeks away from being involved again, that is the only reason I can think for letting Leonard go.

I'm guessing he still lives down your way Mr Rooter? That may be part of the attraction.

As Millwall are in for 3 players (Leonard plus 2) to replace Saville why is there any pressure on us to sell? We can't get a replacement in as we're limited to 2 more loans and they look likely to cover LWB and striker. Moving Leonard on with his versatility weakens an already thin squad. Unless Millwall are offering silly money and that has to be at least twice what we paid for him why are we even considering this. If Leonard has said he wants to go then we squeeze Wall for all we can get but it has to be a substantial profit.

C'est la vie. what really pisses me off in all this is the absolute abuse and garbage I will have to put up with on their board should I enquire about Lenny's progress. Things like 'nosey fucker (which I am) go away and die' and other choice stuff has already come my way when attempting to interact on their board. Whereas up here with you chaps the insults are reserved for when I really deserve them.

Agree, this isn’t a situation where a rich club can double his wages, it’s Millwall, it’s a step backwards. Unless he’s desperately unhappy and really can’t settle, I’m sure he’d be prepared to keep fighting for his place. He’s only an injury away from the first team, he’s already in the squad and starting to contribute.

He's actually a Plymouth boy by origin, but his lady is from these parts. Whether he still lives down here I don't rightly know.
Ah yes of course. An ex-Pilgrim no less. I think he lives in Shoeburyness. It's just a guess.

For me, he needs to get away and play some games.

He has the talent - not sure he is convinced himself that he can hack it at this level. He seems a bit scared to commit in case of making a mistake - rabbit in headlights. He needs games - with games, he'll get confidence - with confidence he'll then realise he's good enough, but it's a vicious circle. Initially he needs game time, which as some have said, once Coutts is back he'll be one further down the order.

Perhaps he'll only be loaned out instead of this loan with purchase in the JTW.

It's a shame as I can still remember the game he scored at BDTBL and thinking that evening - "he's a decent footballer".

UTB

Christ, not many would admit to that.
It's years since I was down that way. I lived in Essex once and used to work across the whole of the county plus a bit of Suffolk as well. I vaguely remember Southend and Shoeburyness, but wouldn't know a good area from a bad one tbh. Hopefully Lenny does! I bet he can afford to live anywhere he likes.

As my username on here reveals, I lived in Essex for about 5 years before I moved to Stratford East London about 10 years ago. Shoebury is not the most salubrious part of Essex, hardly Canvey Island, but not really the usual abode of a professional footballer. I know Lennys Dad through my uncle (both ex-Tiverton Town as was Lenny junior), but I haven't heard of any issues of not settling further North. His other half might be pining for Essex though.

If she is homesick why would she get involved with a footballer ? I wonder ?
He could always buy her a 1980 Ford Fiesta XR2 and let her race it around the Manor if she was homesick

Without wishing to offend, I don't know how anyone can pine for Essex. I lived in Chelmsford, Brentwood and Tolleshunt D'Arcy. Tolleshunt D'Arcy and that area around Maldon and the Blackwater estuary was pleasant. But I felt a large part of the county was a mixture of barren scrubland infected with pylons and mile upon mile of endless suburbia. This was a long time ago I stress - 1980's - so a lot may have changed by now. Of course there are unattractive areas everywhere and I think my dislike of Essex was probably magnified by being away from home for the first time in my life, finding it hard to make new friends (at first) and having to drink Greene King beer!

Not quite the same as racing from Westcliff to the Kursaal.
Sadly for some, the Police have put a stop to the seafront racing up and down. We still get convoys of the customised super shiney chrome glistening stuff, but they go very slowly so as not to scratch them.

As with all areas, as you say, there are good and bad bits. If you're born and raised Essex then it's not difficult to pine when you're away, unless of course you're from a scummy bit. Chelmsford is now a city so it's making itself posher by the minute. But back to Lenny, and Lenny's lady, not all Essex girls fit the Essex stereotype that it's so easy to label them with. Sorry, off topic.

If ever you have the incredibly good fortune to re-visit Roots Hall you may like to try this place. It's on the skeleton of a converted public toilet but it's now a thriving micro pub with some incredibly good ales and only five minutes walk from the ground. https://www.westroadtap.com/

Cheers Roots,
but I think you'll find that no-one on this forum is the slightest bit interested in knowing about quality ales to drink before away games

Yeah, I absolutely get that, but sometimes, from what I've previously read on here, a significant minority post stuff on here that is not of the slightest interest to others...........Now IF we reach the Championship this season then you might just be grateful for this piece of insider knowledge on your next trip down. you can thank me later.;)
