Because they’re two completely different players? If Wilder was confident Whiteman was ready to slot into the team, he wouldn’t have categorically said he was staying the full season, same as Reed. He’s shown re: Brooks that he isn’t afraid of recalling players if he thinks they’re ready – the fact that his view hasn’t shifted despite what looks like from afar to be a decent loan spell suggests that he isn’t what we need right now.
They're both defensive midfielders at mid table league one clubs

Wilder only kept Brooks because he came on as sub v chesterfield and scored a goal that no one else in the team could

I thought it was due to an impressive summer including the Toulon tournament? Given it’s no secret that we have a small budget, do you really think Wilder is willing to invest so much time, effort, and importantly money, on one player if we could simply recall a player as good? I haven’t seen Leonard or Whiteman this season, though have previously. I suspect Wilder and/or Knill will have seen both, and are well-placed to make a judgment on their respective abilities and suitability for our system.

He was still going out on loan after the toulon tournament
We were trying to sign leonard then but opted for lundstram later on
We've done ok without him and Brooks has done well so unless you're suggesting that wilder thinks Whiteman is shit I don't get your point

Reed played for chesterfield that night, that was who we gave them instead of Brooks.

Wilder had already decided that we would keep Brooks before the friendly at Chesterfield

No, definitely took Reed instead of Brooks. I went to the game and remember saying to my lad how gutted the Chezzy fans must be seeing what they could have had instead of Reed. (Even though I thought Reed played quite well against us)
Fair enough
I've just had a really hot bath and feel like I'm gonna collapse
So memory a bit hazy

That’s absolutely not what I’m saying. What I have said is that Wilder doesn’t think he’s ready to add to the first team, which is why we’re looking at other targets (like Leonard) rather than recalling him.

I think you’ve got your timeline mixed a little with the Brooks loan. It was agreed before the Toulon Tournament, which ended June 10. We told Chesterfield around the 24th that we instead wanted to assess him over pre-season before deciding where he’d go, cancelling the loan in the process. It wasn’t till about 3 weeks after that he scored against Chesterfield, well after we’d decided he was staying, and after we’d loaned them Reed instead.

My point in raising the Brooks situation is to point out that Wilder isn’t afraid of changing his opinion on a young player if they do something to make him reconsider their immediate worth (Wilder explicitly said the Toulon Tournament did that when interviewed by Radio Sheffield over the summer). That doesn’t appear to have happened with Whiteman, which in my view suggests in spite of his loan Wilder still doesn’t think he would be as useful to the squad as Leonard at this present time.

Fair enough but my only point was that Whiteman appears to be having a better season than leonard and I suppose it had only just occurred to me so I posted it on here for others opinions
Apologies regards the Brooks thing I have got my wires crossed

GET FUCKING SIGNED LEONARD OR JUST FUCK THE FUCK OFF. (And you Chris. Don't fucking beg. move on).

Was half expecting Roots on here tonight confirming fee agreed, but alas it looks like Cole will be the first one through the door

i think cole was always going to be the first one through the door after what happened in the summer

As far as Southend are concerned the price for leonard won't change til last minute on the last day when they cannot turn down 750k which I think was the last offer. They are probably praying for a bidding war between us and Millwall

Having had a look Southend are struggling 4 points outside the drop zone and 10 off the play offs with key games this month so if they dare risk him getting injured they will use him til they play scunny on the 27th. Then he goes to the highest bidder

We probably need him as soon as possible to be honest. We are threadbare in midfield.

Same here. Hope we tap him up and sign him no matter what.

cant players in the last 6 months of their existing deal sign a Pre-Contract, if so just do this it will be the biggest F-You to the Southend owner playing games.
