think its just part of his contract, like Coutts and Freeman, might not be over just yet, but means we will have to pay out for him.

If we can't get Irvine then I'd like us to really try for this guy.

I'd be happy with him but Millwall may just nick him now they're up!

Looks like he's just exercised the one year extension option, so this doesn't change anything. We knew we weren't getting him on a free transfer.

Southend confirmed that they were going to exercise the option to extend at the end of April. The option was in their favour and allowed them to extend for a further 1 year period (bit like we have done with Coutts and Freeman). They are simply protecting their asset and nothings really changed on the potential transfer to Utd front. Can see this one happening.

Chief sports reporter at the Southend Echo has said we've made a bid for Leonard, which has been rejected by Southend.

Evening Blades fans. Seems the bidding process is about to begin in earnest. How much do you think you're going to have to part with to get Lenny? We picked up a fair amount of money when Bentley went to Brentford (£800k) and Jackie Payne went to Huddersfield (£400k) and Lenny is worth far more than either of those two.

How much do you reckon realistically ?

I wouldn't have a clue been quoted 4m for Ollie Watkins half up front which seems unrealistic to me

Depends if you play hard ball I think...

Wilder hasn't really tended to muck about negotiating if we've been miles apart on fees. I can only really think of Leon Clarke where the signing seemed to drag on where we were negotiating over the price. The rest seemed to be concluded fairly quickly or at least privately and reasonably. Apparently we didn't pay over 250k for anyone last year.

What sort of player would we be getting?

I would expect the cost to be around the £1m mark with sell ons. Whether your club would pay that, I don't know. The chances are that none of us will get to know the actual amount if a deal is done. I would much rather that he stayed with us, he is that good, but if he goes then Sheffield would be a very good move for him and you.

You would be getting a footballer who is also an athlete. He has a very good engine which lasts 90 minutes, he's deceptively quick and is strong in the air. Also has a good shot when allowed forward. Having typed that lot I've decided he's too good to let go so he's not for sale. Seriously, you have to watch the bloke week in week out to appreciate his qualities. I'm just surprised someone hasn't snapped him up before.

He's worth what the market dictates, though I understand you are speaking in comparative terms. One things for sure; Tufty won't pay a penny more than he thinks the lad is worth. He won't be an automatic starter at the Lane. We have real quality in central midfield.

A 24 year old with 12 months left on a conract, unproven above L1 is not going to command anything like the figures mentioned above.

If Utd are willing to go above £300k I'd be very surprised. Whether the move happens will primarily depend on the player. Another season playing Bury and P'boro or double your money on a longer contract playing Villa, Leeds, Sunderland, Middlesbrough and not forgetting The Massive. Toughie!

Again the right kind of player we should be looking to sign. Unlikely that we are the only club after him so could be expensive....but then again cheaper than the overpaid, last big contract types that we've signed in the past !

He's in the last year of his contract. 400k max for him.

If he had a 3 year deal you would get £1 Million.

Excellent signing If we can pull it off. Right age, no stupid transfer fee or wages. Will probably go with a midfield of Leonard, Fleck and Coutts for the difficult away games and sacrifice Duffy/Carruthers/Holmes just behind the 2 forwards.

What if someone else is willing to pay £500k or £600k unfortunately Contract length is not the only deciding factor in deciding fees

Murphy, Adams, Maguire, Blackman etc. all commanded much bigger fees and weren’t proven above league 1. I expect he would cost more than £300k but I would also expect any fee to be heavily incentivised so something like £500k up front with potential add ons that could see us pay in excess of a million if he plays regularly and we get to the Prem.

Hopefully we can get this lad on the cheap although I wouldn't worry too much if we had to push the boat out for this one.

Seems a perfect fit for us and has won player of the season 3 times at Southend. Good workrate, good attitude, good age, adds to squad options. This lad seems destined for bigger stuff and he's only going to increase in value in my opinion.

I seem to recall he's played right back a few times in the past so he could even be good cover for Freeman to boot! (if my half-arsed research is true)

He also has 87 pace on Fifa, so seems quite mobile.
