Well judging by CW''s most recent comments, something had to give soon re Leonard / Holmes. It was coming to the stage where a compromise had to be found or it was time to move on.

Don't know how true the latest rumour is re 'a breakthrough in negotiations' but it wouldn't surprise me. Realistically, taking away all the bluff and counter bluff and the talking to the local press, Southend know the lad wants to move on, they want some money in now cos they don't want to keep an unhappy player who only has 1 season left under contract, and there hasn't really been any other competition to Utd bar Millwall. The anticipated auction hasn't happened for Southend. I suspect a fee of between 400k to 500k will get the lad. If so, well done Blades for holding your nerve and not just paying what was initially being demanded. Let's see how this one unfolds.

is that a credible site?

CW in yesterdays interviews intimated things with both RL and RH sre still going back and forth and that there was no breakthrough to date
No crazy posts on there suggesting it's anything other than a blade passing on a couple of bits of info. It's not a transfer page with crazy transfer rumours or anything like that, nearly 600 followers.

Doesn't mean the content is accurate obviously but no reason to suggest otherwise

I'm intrigued. How do you know what was originally being demanded? Nobody else on this site or on the Southend one knows what the club's valuation is, not even Lenny.

But how do you know that people don't get snippets of information from other sources (not Southend fc) ? Just possibly someone at the Sheffield end might just know what the initial asking price is...after all they are currently negotiating a sale price. I'm not sure how you can be so sure that no one knows what the Southend valuation of a player was / is.

For the record, I'd say Southend's initial asking price was around the £700k figure which Utd won't pay. So if Utd get him cheaper than that (which is a strong possibility) then they will have done well - hence my earlier comment. As for whether my figure is correct or not....well you might have to stay 'intrigued' until any deal is sorted and any further details become known. Tbh, whether this goes through or not it's not really a concern to me. There are other fishes in the sea if it doesn't.

As you say, we will all have to wait and see.

We'll never know because the fee will be "undisclosed"! It's only at the bigger deals that the fees are known - not because they announce them, but because the media swarms all over the deal and finds out what the real fee is. There is little interest, other than locally and Southend, as to what the actual price is. Its still small fry in today's transfer market. It's about time that fees for players should be announced, even if it is not required at the time, every deal should have to be announced to the public, not just a total of players sold and brought.

It looks as though the Holmes deal is 'dead in the water' and Brooks will get his chance, great news.I suspect that this will enable us to free the funds to meet Southends valuation of Leonard and that he will sign for us next week,i think this is the best decision all round.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm now imagining the bidding process for Leonard to have gone like this.

Can't beat a bit of Partridge! It seems that we've had our pants down in the past and under Wilder those days are gone thankfully. It does however mean we probably miss out on players that would undoubtedly improve us but want too high a wage, or the club wants a higher fee than we'e willing to go. Under Clough it seemed to be we'd pay whatever it takes to get John Brayford, and sadly it didn't work out. James Beattie was another that stands out as a huge buy with big wages but he did produce, but then we sold him presumably because McCabe didn't want to continue paying the wages and miss out on a reasonable offer from Stoke, even though it was less than we paid for him.

200

My favourite bit is when he asks if the egg tree is included...."it's not a deal breaker but I would like to know" :D

He is mine and my brother's favourite. Part of our Christmas ritual.

Surely it's simply how good the player turns out to be?

If we sign a player for £250k and pay him £3k a week and he is worse than Hussey then we've had our pants down? But if we pay £5m for a striker and pay him £20k a week, but he scores 40 goals then he's an absolute bargain!

I don't think the policy has changed since Wilder came in, the manager works to a budget and we pay what we think that player is worth.

That's a ridiculous metafore, I mean what if you were to pay, say, £10m for a striker, and he only scored say, 1 goal all season, would he be a brilliant acquisition!?
No, and nobody would ever be stupid enough to do that would they!!!!!........................................oh, hang on.

I get the Jordan Rhodes dig, but what is wrong with the metafore? If Rhodes had scored 20 goals last season and they get promoted he would have been worth every penny.

It's got to a point where our fans don't want us to spend decent money because it will be a waste of money.

You need to spend wisely whether that's signing 10 players at £250k each or 1 player at £2.5m. The size of the fees and the wages aren't the issue, it's all about signing the right players.

I believe this may have gone way way above your turnip dude.
Never fear, not everything in this world is quite as serious as it is in ur mind;), relax, it will come.

I understood the Jordan Rhodes reference as I said before, what else went above my head? Please enlighten me?!?

I shouldn't, but I can't resist it. What bluster have I offered up on here that makes you feel the need to refer to it in the same breath as you repeating your bluster about Ron Martin? I'll try not to insult your intelligence by offering you up a definition of the word. If you're struggling to find a correct meaning, let me know and I'll post a link.

Forgive me but as you've raised it I can't resist either. The bluster is presenting RugRon as some hard as nails; doesn't give an inch; ace wheeler-dealer. He's not. You will sell Leonard and you'll sell him for less than your original asking price. All that will happen before the end of August. Bookmark it.

As to offering me definitions, forgive me but you're on my territory there. It won't be necessary.

Just so that we can do this fairly, how much is Southend's original asking price?
