The problem we may well have next season is even if Coutts and Fleck are fit other teams will have worked out they don't track back or do it lazily when we lose the ball high up the park so teams will draw us on to them then attack our unprotected defensive line with more skill and pace than in L1. Think of a many of the goals we conceded last season especially at away games. This is probably why we are fishing for a midfielder who can both defend and attack.

yes, I like the theory, but CM is what runs any team and they are not readily available. If we knew Coutts and Fleck wouldn't get injured then it would be ok, but no one can guarantee that. We are presently light in CM and CD

I would prefer 1 or 2 CH's that can actually play further up and defend properly when needed.

No problem with Leonard coming in for either Fleck or Coutts if injured but again that's my point, Wilder could be only bringing him in for this reason hence only willing to bid for Leonard as a squad player and not a first teamer.

True but ideally you want your squad players to be almost as good as your first teamers and with the potential to improve. We'll be lucky to have another season with as few injuries so we need strength in depth, not squad fillers.

There is no debate to be had. I repeat. Anyone who doesn't know what proper football means won't understand the explanation. There is no case for Hoof. Hoof lost the debate decades ago. This is not a contentious proposition anywhere but S2. You like hoof? Have it. It's all yours, just don't pretend it's got anything to do with the beautiful game.

And again I agree but on the flipside, if we don't have any injuries in midfield then Leonard might not play much at all.

Leonard will certainly add strength to the squad, infact he could add to the first team itself but if Wilder does see him as a first team player or someone who atleast adds to the option of being a first teamer then surely you'd think a bid of more than £350k, our third bid 'btw' would be required?

My guess is that with the bids being made that Wilder rates him but not as much as Southend or Leonard himself might think and this is why I think there has been a long drawn out bidding process for his services, Southend wanting a lot more money and Leonard wandering if it would be a good move for his career, for example whether or not he could replace Fleck or Coutts meaning not enough game time. Questions, questions!

Dude, just start the thread. If you articulate the issue/opening post well enough and the patrons here feel there's a discussion to be had, it'll develop into a debate I'm sure Pinchy and others will relish. If not then, at least, you really can say you tried.

I haven't seen him play so I'm only going off other opinions that he's a good player. If that's the case and he signs then I look forward to making my own mind up by seeing what he can do.

If he doesn't sign I have no idea what I'm missing (if anything) so ignorance is bliss. I just think they should get on with completing it so that we don't reach Sam Morsy levels of thread boredom. I'm not sure how much we can talk about a player that isn't even at our club.

On a more serious note, Lenny has made his position clear - he wants to go. There is only a fag paper between that and a transfer request. Watch this space for Lenny upping the ante and RugRon upping his hairline but lowering his expectations.

This is where Wilder has it right. He's looking at their actual value and ability stand alone, We don't care he's important to southend. he has a year left there, hasn't attracted loads of interest elsewhere, and is worth "X" according to our manager.
They can go out and search for a replacement the same way we are. A player they can get for peanuts relative to them from non league or league 2, and hope he's good enough to make the step up. This lad is a gamble to us just the same. We are trusting a mans judgement as much as anything.

Or they can reject our offer which does not meet their valuation of a player who is valuable to them. That is absolutely their perogative. If we'd sold one of our best players in League 1 for a few hundred grand, I, and many others on here would be livid so I can entirely understand why Southend don't want to. Yes they risk losing him for nothing but it's up to them whether the sum on offer now is worth more than a year of the players' service. The point about how important a player is to the selling club is illustrated by Matt Done. Now we are in the championship, we have little to no use for him and will let him go for nothing or next to nothing to get him off the wage bill. When we signed him, he was integral to Rochdale so they wouldn't let him go unless they received a decent fee to help them strengthen the team. I'm not saying Wilder SHOULD pay more because he's imortant to Southend whereas JOC and Moore weren't. What I'm saying is that if he wants him, he will cost more than they did for the reasons highlighted in the Matt Done case.

Southend are perfectly entitled to keep their own players. They are entitled to settle upon a transfer valuation and stick to it. Equally we can and should offer no more than our valuation.

However, there is a another factor. Lenny. He wants to go. That changes the landscape. There's golf to be played and it's hot.

Southend will sell him. They'll compromise their valuation and they'll sell him. RugRon will have to make an adjustment. Not before time, either.

Take your point about bit part though, but we are all speculating on formation. Perhaps CW has 4-4-2 in mind for this division and he sees Lenny as more of a 4. Evidence shows that we are not blessed with a 4 for midfield, perhaps Fleck and Leonard in centre mid is a permutation.

I don't think it's as simple as bit part, back up, first team regular etc. I don't think Wilder wants guaranteed starters backed up by bit part players. I think he wants good options and competition in all areas. I think Leonard would be brought in as a potential first team player but far from guaranteed. I think Wilder probably sees him as someone who can offer stiffer competition to Fleck and Coutts than the likes of Whiteman, Scougall, Reed etc. could and who starts would be dependant on form, the opposition etc.. I think Carruthers was brought in under a similar basis that he would compete with Duffy for the role. Same with Baldock/ Freeman, Stevens/ Lafferty, Ched/ Clarke/ Hanson/ Lavery. Thomas is maybe a little different as he provides a natural wide option. Something we don't normally play with but gives us a means to change our shape like Chapman did last season.

It's a bit puzzling that in the many posts about formations and who plays where, the name of Carruthers is rarely mentioned as an important part of this team's future.

Of course Fleck and Coutts get mentioned, and of course we mustn't forget Duffy, but Carruthers? It's still unclear where he'll play, so Wilder obviously needs to make that decision for everyone's good.
