I agree. It is unprofessional and disloyal though, to fabricate a reason not to play in a friendly. Should we ignore that just because we like a player and wrongly blame the club management?
Thing is though, owners and management tell players they are ill (or have sunstroke) so as to miss a match thus protecting an asset that they are currently trying to broker a deal for (sorry if this has been said before but I can hardly see my cornflakes let alone the small text on mi phone).

Hi blades.

Firstly good luck for next season. Proper football club and a good set of fans.

Really enjoyed my trip into brammell lane.

Back on topic. I don't think we will lose Ryan Leonard. Ryan is a big part of what we are trying to achieve. The money that has been offered is nowhere near what it would take for us to part with him. I would have thought it would take 750k+ To tempt us. Of course Ryan could force the issue but I don't think he is that kind of player.

From what I have heard we have offered him a very good 4 year deal with potentially the captaincy too.

I think the club's stance is that we want to achieve championship football which would bring in countless millions. It makes no sense to sell one of your best for peanuts and jeopardise that.

I could be wrong!

Good luck in the championship

If you're trying to convince us that he won't go because he's your best player and it wouldn't make sense for you to sell... then you're using the wrong reasons to the wrong set of fans.

Have Southend ever been in the Championship or Division 2? I can't recall. It's not a club I have ever associated with that level of football. No disrespect to your club or you, but I don't see them as Championship contenders. I know you had a good season last season finishing 7th - but even if you strengthen the team that doesn't necessarily mean you'll improve on that position.

Ryan Leonard will need to weigh this up carefully. His chances of playing at the top level in the game are better away from Southend. Whether that's us or someone else. Careers in football are short.

Good luck in League 1 next season but don't expect promotion with or without Leonard. Other players that you will be looking to sign will probably have a similar impression of your club and it's prospects to me.

No I'm merely stating that a good season and potential championship football is worth more than 300k. Our chairman is nothing if not stubborn. He will either want the cash or another good season from Ryan. Ryan is a good player and a decent honest pro. If he doesn't go now he will want to put himself in the shop window for January or at the end of next season. The only way to do that is by continuing to improve his game and play well.

I don't blame any player for wanting to better themselves. But I has to he done right.

That's fair to say. And at this moment I time I'd say you are right.

We are an ambitious club and hope to get the final go ahead for our new stadium in the coming months. Essex is a huge catchment area and we are unable to tap into that at roots hall. The new stadium will have a capacity of 21k. I'm not saying we will fill it or that it will increase our fortunes but it will at least give us a chance.

We have played championship football. The last time being a solitary season in the mid 00's and spent six seasons there In the 90s. But your right that the bottom two divisions have been our mainstay.

Lots of club's have built new stadiums and have enjoyed great success, but for everyone of those there are the likes of Darlington.

Yes I read about that new stadium plan. Work not started yet though but I think it would be very good for your club. Clubs can be transformed and attract new supporters if they have a nice new stadium and are playing good football at a decent level.

One of our local clubs, Chesterfield, moved to a new stadium a few years ago and their average gates leapt up by about 50%.

Unfortunately for them they've got serious financial problems and got relegated last season. But it was looking very different when they first moved to their new home.

I used to live in Essex, near Colchester, and know a bit about the rivalries and potential down there. The big club will always be West Ham of course. But there's room for Southend to gear up a bit and take a bigger share of a huge catchment area I agree.

Is there any footage anywhere of Kevin Arnotts wonder goal at Southend in the 83/84 season?

What a goal that was,and so important, great player Ossie Arnott

Yeah they were in there in the early / mid 1990s and I think did Ok. Had Mike Marsh in the midfield and Jerome Boere up top I think.

Probably also prevents too much disruption of the match that said player is missing?

Leonard is at an age where he needs to be tested sooner or later, so he needs to be looking ar the Championship.

If he enjoys it down there and/ or has some ties then I'd possibly stay for the final year of his contract. Each month fron now on whilst he's playing well then his valuation goes down but his salary demands at a new club go up.

The situation can be reviewed in January18.
If Southend are top 2 at Xmas then it might be worth while staying at Southend to see if they get promoted.

But if Southend are mid table then I reckon he'll be sold in the JTW for a knock down price of £100 to £200 K
And due to the smalllish transfer fee then it gives him a great opportunity to negotiate a big pay rise at a Championship club.

Or he could see out his final year, massive risk for Southend but no risk for the player.
Leave on a FREE in Summer18 and get a pig pay rise somewhere else.

It wouldn't make much sense for him to sign a contract extension at Southend as this means he could spend his whole career in the lower divisions. Just because the Sothend Chairman might be ambitious doesn't mean promotion. We have an ambitious Chairman with relatively big finances and we still spent 6 years in league 1.

No risk.......Unless he has a shit season.

Or he has a career ending injury in April next year...

Agree, there is the old adage. Strike whilst the iron is hot.

For Ryan Leonard this could be the watershed moment and crossroads of his career.
If he refuses a move to the Championship this Summer he might have lost his chance forever.

Well spotted ha.
Maybe the auto spell on this IPad thinks he's joining Sheff Wednesday next year.

we don't want him going there! not unless they pay 10 mil for him, then I can sleep easy knowing at least they have been had up for the tuna mans money :)
