So Fleck is worth >£3m after a good season in L1 but Leonard is worth around £300k after a good season in L1?

Ah, but Leonard has only one year left on his contract so his value reduces by 90%, that's how it works

Player valuations are not linear these days and can be based on club finances.

Now that we are promoted we can easily fend off £1 million bids. In fact the effective value of many of our players has now more than doubled just because of promotion.

Let's say Leonard is worth £500K but Fleck is worth £2million, does that mean Fleck is 4 times better than Leonard? The answer is no, Fleck might only be 10% better but that 10% improvement can make a massive contribution towards the success of a team.

Another example is Lukaku at Everton. They don't need to sell him and for Everton £50 million isn't life changing, so they put a £100 million price tag in him. No one can tell me Lukaku deserves to be one of the most expensive players in the world.

If we reach the PL then Fleck would instantly be worth 15 million+.

For a club like Southend £500K is a massive amount and economics say they will be tempted to cash in. He'd be bought as a squad player with potential, probably wouldn't initially start. Also the valuation is decreasing all the time, so if we don't get him now then the January transfer window might be the time.

The obvious flaw in his plan being if the player rejects the 'substantially' improved offer and tells him he wants to move. They are then forced into either making him available for sale or lose out completely when his contract expires.

We'll see, although I must admit I am getting a bit bored of this now and wouldn't be at all dissapointing if Wilder signs his next target instead, whoever that may be.

The most telling part of the Chairman's comments is when he says, "We've knocked back all the bids so far".

And therein lies the facts of transfer reality. If a club receives a figure that they can't ignore or resist then a move will almost certainly take place. It's just that so far Southend have been unwilling to consider the Blade's bid. Things can change and press statements that seem unwilling to consider a bid can then become redundant.

Let's say Leonard is worth £500K but Fleck is worth £1.5million, linear wise does that mean Fleck is 3 times better than Leonard? The answer is no, Fleck might only be 10% better but that 10% improvement can make a massive contribution towards the success of a team.

I disagree. We wouldn't have sold Fleck in the JTW for £500k even if his contract expired at the end of the year. It's not a huge amount of money for Southend, it's OK but it's not game changing. We sold three players for over £1m last season, as a L1 club.

If Leonard is actually any good, someone else will make an offer for him.

Comparisons with the PL don't really work, we're not in the PL and we haven't got an income of £100m plus per annum. Lukaku is in a position where he can force a move and Everton won't be getting £100m. I doubt Leonard is financially secure enough to do that so if Southend want to keep him, they will do. They can certainly sit and wait for another three months.

At the moment though, it doesn't appear like they're losing out on a huge amount of money though. It's not like us when Hull offered £2m for Maguire. I'm pretty sure if Hull had offered £500k we'd have kept him and risked his contract expiring.

I think it's just games at the moment. If I were the Southend chairman I'd wait until August and see how the land lies. A lot of managers will be on their third choices by then and so there's a decent chance someone like QPR or Fulham might come in for him.

If this is going to be one of those never ending transfer sagas then I'm really not bothered about this bloke.

If they can agree on a price and the lad wants to come then fine. If not, move on. A defensive midfielder is not our most pressing need. All we need there is an extra option or some cover.

At the moment this thread could end up with more pages than the Sam Morsy one.

If we up the bid for Leonard to say £600k will the firum valuation of Fleck increase in line with that?

We're in the Pigs £20m defence are here.

Smarty pants! I think that by the time the weekend arrives we'll have a £25 million player in Fleck.....not an opinion, that's a red and white fact YHIHF

I think Ms Abbott has multiple accounts on here judging by the various figures being bandied about.

Where was he actually going to play?

Hobest question.

Apart from second fiddle to Coutts and Fleck.

It's a shame players don't get Beattie flu in the off-season. We'd properly know what was going on then

Totally agree, we should move on. He was only a back up player, abet with big potential, no urgency to sign him.

Although unless Southend are promoted next season it's in their interest to sell.
Suspect the situation will be reviewed in the January transfer window.
If Southend are only mid table then they'll be hoping to sell but his value will be plummeting.
Also knowing he missed out on a big movement could lead to a loss of form.

There's a loooooong way to go and many more zzzzzzzzzzs to catch en route, I'm afraid, before we're anywhere close to the Great Morsy Panic of 2014-15 (2,636 posts so far). And don't forget Dan Burn's admirable 767. Hell, even Ryan Tafazoli has clocked 439 !

Leonard has a long way to go, and a lot to learn yet :)

Millwall believe they're front runners due to location. RL has apparently made it clear he has no desire to move north. Thats from a player
Either his Geography is shite or Millwalls' is because Millwall is north of Southend. :)

My guess is that the Lennoard transfer will only move faster once it's known whether he will be willing to accept a new deal from Southend. If the answer is no, I'd suspect that Southend will be more willing to sell. Personally, I think Southend already know that they have no chance of keeping him - at least no chance of keeping him, unless they want an unhappy player on their hands and we all know that can be very dangerous to keep an unhappy player. Michael Brown springs to mind when he didn't get the move he wanted and then was average in the season after.

No way we would sell Fleck for 2 to 3 mill he's worth two three times that amount and if we are offered that sell him part of what we have to do is trade are way out of the division

...........and what happens if there is a clause in his contract.

Does anyone actually know?

Agreed he may be worth more, but clever agents have all sorts in contracts these day. If there isn't some sort of release clause then the agent isn't doing his job right.

Thank Pele we have players who can be linked with multi-million pound transfers....

We can all remember far too often the times when a book of green shield stamps would secure the whole team...

Indeed and I doubt many will pull the wool over our eyes while CW is here - but EVERY play has their price - and most have a release clause.
