Because at some point during the season, where we can only do business during a transfer window, we will at some point get hit with 6 or 7 players out through injury and suspension, including 3 or 4 centre halves or midfielders. Then the value of having a solid, experienced pro who can play multiple positions will become apparent.

When people say we have a weak squad, they mean that our options for cup games/rotation/injury cover are weak.

For the people that whinge about this, do you want us to buy multi-million pound players on fat salaries to be that cover, or will cheap academy kids that might be national league quality do?
