We dont have the stength in depth to cope with Europe in my opinion. We all know Wilder will fuck the League Cup off again next season. The only reason we’ve had a go at the FA Cup is cos we were safe in the league.

O’Connell back-up has been a problem area for some time – we’ve never really had it, and it’s only the luck of his good injury record and Stevens being able to fill in last season temporarily that has meant we’ve not really had to confront it.

I‘ve been impressed with Robinson. He’s come into a slightly new position and while he’s obviously still learning he’s getting better as we does the role more. He hasn‘t been helped at all by Stevens being a bit all over the place, but he‘s clearly keen to embrace the more attacking parts of the role. You saw today him having the confidence to pick out Fleck on the ground with a short pass rather than just tonking it downfield, numerous overlaps, some really good passes into the box. There were some glimpses of this at Old Trafford, lost in the midst of the criticism of the team. Compare what he had the confidence to do today with his first two games and there is a big improvement.

It’s very unlikely that we’ll find someone to do the LCB role as well as O’Connell. But I think Robinson looks like he could be a decent understudy.

Coming in to replace some one who has consistently been hot in that position, he’s done very well.
JOCs absence has clearly affected others around him, and the balance of our attacking options has shifted too. Robinson is not a like for like replacement, but he is proving capable and brings a different skill set. JOC obviously has an effect on those around him too.
At our level, having players slot into key positions is difficult, considering the budget we have.
Luke Freeman is a similar problem for the manager. A capable lad who can step up and provide similar cover and different skills.
The loss of JOC to the starting line up, has clearly affected the qualities of his replacement, and masked O’Connells effect on those around him.

The trouble is most of the recent goals conceded have come down his side of defence, I notice when Norwood didn't track the runner Robinson was rooted to the spot , Hendo had to try and close the shooting angle.

This, he’s looked ok going forward but is seriously lacking in pace and defensive nous at PL level. JoC would have stopped a lot of their attacks from getting into the box

I think it is more a Championship player who is still coming to terms of the speed of thought needed in the Premier League where things happen a lot faster even if the game seems to be at a lower pace at times. When there is an opportunity Premier league players are on to it like lightning.

This is entirely my own prejudice, but when that throw goes in, arrow like, I feel a bit dirty, as though we might be betraying our pure footballing principles, we shouldn’t need that kind of agricultural tactic.

That may be connected to the fact that I was living in Stoke when Rory Delap was taking every Stoke throw under Pulis and I hated the way they used it. I felt it should somehow have been outlawed, not quite sure how, but it definitely had no place in the game. Times change though, it does now

Nothing at all againt Robinson, he's done admirably. But if we want a squad challenging for top half finishes then we have to be upgrading even cover positions. Blatantly obvious our squad is exposed to suspensions and injuries.

Like we did in the championship, we have to evolve and upgrade the squad ruthlessly and constantly.

He’s been signed for a very specific role: LCB. Wilder’s stated it, Robinson’s made it clear that’s why he was brought in, and if we’re to try and keep working on him to be that back-up I don’t see the value in us moving him around elsewhere when we’ve already got people in the squad like Osborn that are there to provide back-up to Stevens.

You might not be aware, but Robinson didn’t really nail down a role at QPR till Holloway put him at centre-back, where he stayed till he was sold to Forest – attribute-wise, he has all the basic ingredients you’d ideally want in a backup LCB in our system. He’s never going to be O’Connell – but I’ve seen enough improvement in a short space of time to suggest he’s worth persevering with in getting to grips with that role so he can be a useful backup when needed.

He's only been here (in terms of training/playing) a few weeks thanks to the layoff. End of the JTW and we went into lockdown 8 weeks later or something. More sessions, a gym schedule to bulk up a bit, and he can only improve.

He's not a plug and play JOC replacement but we paid what, £500,000 for him - that's fuck all, JOC must be a £20m defender in the Premier League market at least, for 1/40th the price, he's definitely not 1/40th the player is he?
