Rivalries

Amazingly Leeds fans don't see either Sheffield club as their main rivals but two top 6 PL clubs and 2 London clubs in all ……… .

Load of bollocks. They've clearly just Googled which clubs are closest to us and then put Leeds 2nd after last season.

Mansfield have always hated anything to do with Sheffield for as long as I can remember, don't know why. I remember in the 70's the united match was postponed so about a dozen of us went to watch Mansfield v Rotherham. No problem with the Rotherham fans but the Mansfield fans went nuts to get at us after the game. They forgot about the Rotherham lot and came down on us they chased us through shops then through fire exits and back alleys while we were lobbing dustbins at them to keep them off.
I was once at a Mansfield game (borrowing a mates season ticket I hasten to add!) the season we went up under Warnock and over heard one of them saying he was getting a United season ticket "just so he could watch some Premier League football", after Mansfield were beaten 5-0 by Cheltenham that day. If Forest ever go up, Field Mill will be empty

[QUOTE="PokerBlade, post: 2192554, member: And every now and then we play one of Doncaster, Barnsley, Rotherham, Bradford, or Chesterfield, and they like to pretend it's a derby game but they're basically irrelevant and I can't really tell them apart.

Cant agree with that. Bradford are twice the size of club any of the others are. A club short of any recent success that recently sold 20 000ish season tickets. Agreed not a rival but unfair to bracket them with the other mentioned teams.

Bradford City have similarities to Leeds United, in that they have big potential, huge potential supporter base right on their doorstep.
Much bigger potential than Barnsley, Rotherham, Donny, Chesterfield etc.
Bradford City have the potential to be a fairly big club.

However studying their history, time spent in each division, average attendances and highest attendances they aren’t as big as people think.
Bradford City have only averaged over 20,000 on just FOUR occasions in their entire history, last time they averaged 20K was 1922.
They did recently sell over 18K season tickets but they were priced at an incredibly low £99 for adults and £49 for kids.

Point taken but were tickets priced like that at any of the other clubs they wouldn't have gotten anywhere near that amount. Doncaster is poorly supported for the size of the town with many choosing to travel to weeds for their football.

Rivalry for me means slightly envious of them. Wednesday, Leeds, Derby, Forest have had recent success which United could have had. I also have to put up with friends or family glowing in their success and consequent banter. The banter is much sweeter now they look up to us.
Toytown or Dingles etc no relevance other than easy 3pts and not far to drive. For that reason alone I hope they win promotion so a short drive and easy win is available.
Quite why any Yorkshirman wishes southerner teams success over Yorkshire teams is beyond me.

I can't even remember when we last played Mansfield. Or where it is.

My memries of Mansfield:

  • Simon Webster's leg cracking in half - everyone in the ground heard it.
  • Deano juggling the ball and scoring from the edge of the box with a turning volley.
  • Tony Kenworthy own goal.
  • Snow. Bob Booker. Penalty. Duffield. 1-0. Heroes.

I think Rotherham and Chesterfield have a irrational dislike of “Dee Dahs” in general not any Sheffield club in particular.

To be honest there's only one team I think of as rivals, Wendy, the rest are more like irritation's because they think their rivals...…...... :tumbleweed:

We played there in a pre-season friendly last summer.
Can't remember the score but remember Wilder doing his post-match team-talk on the pitch.
