RIP Shred

I'm another who didn't know Shred personally other than to nod and say 'alreight?' Hearing the news Friday was so emotional, emotional all weekend really, I'm glad I wasn't in work, living in Bristol my colleagues wouldn't have understood just what this man meant to all us Blades and hence why this stupid 50 year man was in tears over someone I didn't even know.

Someone earlier in this thread mentioned the Shred stories that are in Matt Bell's 'Blades Tales' books and to be honest I had forgotten that so I dug my copies out today and had a good read. If you haven't got it get 'Blades Tales 2'; from tears of sadness over the weekend I've cried tears of joy reading Bill Brealey's hilarious stories of his time with Shred over the years, there must be over 20 stories in there. If you want to remember Shred with a smile on your face I suggest you get hold of a copy of this fantastic book.

P.S. No I'm not Matt Bell, Kev Titterton or Andy Nicolson ;-)
Can you type in the story from Blades Tales 2 (I dont have it) about how he embarrassed Eddie Colquhoun twice please?

Silent, just for you and of course for Shred, here's the story, written exactly as Bill wrote it in phonetic Sheffieldish!!

Shred Loves Eddie

Eddie Colquhoun's testimonial dinner in the old Tudor Rooms at Bramall Lane, abaht 1978. Currie is Shred's all time 'ero but Colquhoun is 'is second-favourite player on t'planet. 'E loved 'im, 'e adored 'im, since 'e come from West Brom in '68. When it were 'is testimonial we 'ad a race night, American 'orse racin', an' Spencer's pissed aht on 'is eead.

Remember a DJ called Ray Stuart on Radio 'Allam? 'E's tellin' Shred to move away, move away from t'mike an' thi 'avin' all these people 'oo'd paid ten bob to pay tribute to Colquhoun. Shred's like tranna chuck fuckin' quids in, so o' course Ray Stuart's pushin' 'im aht 'o t'way an Shred loses 'is balance an' falls into t'speakers. T'fuckin' lot went, all yer could 'ear were this feedback, it were like a Jimi 'Endrix concert! Shred's goin' "Aaah, noooh, nooooh!" An' Colquhoun just fuckin' walks aht!

Cooerse we never see owt o' Colquhoun then for another four or five years. We guz to Scotland ageean for a pre-season tour an' we walks into this fuckin' pub in weerever it were, t'east coast o' Scotland playin' ..... Dunfermline or someone like that. An' 'oo's be'ind t'bar ....Eddie Colquhoun. We ant even 'ad a fuckin' drink an' Spencer guz "Ahhhh, aaahhh! Skipper"

'E guz runnin' o'er to t'bar an' Colquhoun's stood theer wi' t'cigar an' 'e just jumps on 'im an' 'e's like ... an' thiz all t'optics comin' o' t'wall. 'E guz, "Fuckin' phsyco! Geddim away from mi!"

Many Thanks AndyBrizz. Loved these two stories. I thought Woody was Shred's favourite though

I'm not going to say i knew Shred well, but like so many, I knew of him and indeed saw him at Rochdale last week. The tributes on here are quite remarkable and show beyond any doubt what "Being a Blade" means to us all - we are very lucky - many will never experience that feeling.

I am sure and hope that at BL tonight there will be a fantastic send off for the great man, but I, like many I'm sure, will also have a tear in the eye for the Blades we have ALL lost over the years.

I can honestly say that I never feel closer to my late Dad than when I am stood with my 2 sons hearing the mighty GCB ring out.

Despite the sadness, once again this week has made me feel lucky and proud to be a Blade.

RIP Shred and All Blades watching over us.

In the 1990s Shred often didnt wear a jumper or a coat when the weather was cold. I remember during half time at Notts County (FA Cup replay) in Jan 1999 I asked him how he could wear just a T shirt and jeans in the cold weather without feeling cold. He pointed to my woolly hat and woolly gloves and then started laughing sarcastically!

Was Shred the bloke about whom there is a story told in Blades tales who refused to acknowledge goals Curran scored for United or was that someone else?

Didnt know Shred then, started to know his face when I started to going to away games again in 1989. Then in the 1990s I got to know him better through Mick Parry

Even I do that Darren :)

I absolutely hated it when he played for us.

Never had a problem with any other ex Wendy, such as
Jeff King
Del Geary
Leigh Bromby
Alan Quinn
Wilf - the zone man
Cressers

Bradders was never a Wendy

Blades fans who watched the Blades in the 1940s had a problem with Joe Cockcroft (a Wendy player in the 1930s) when he came to us in the relegation season of 1948-49. He was in his late 30s and missed a crucial penalty in a match that we needed points. My Wendy supporting uncle found it funny!

Heard loads about Shred over the years without really knowing who he was..Remember being at MK that day,and a big bloke with long hair and glasses was sat/stood in front of us...every time United attacked we all stood up..the big bloke with long hair turned around and made his appologies for getting to his feet...I said it was no problem, don't worry about it mate...each time United attacked he sort of nodded my way...I mentioned to a mate about the game and the big Blade who was in front of us who seemed to show more concern than he needed to for standing up...the lad said it sounds like Shred that you're describing...not long after someone pointed him out one day,and I'm convinced it was Shred that day at MK...anyway,he was a top Blade either way..RIP Shred.

There was another, bigger, picture and a few more bunches of flowers added to that aswell.

If this has been mentioned elsewhere apologies.

James Shield, in his column in The Star, mentioned that a wreath was left at Bramall Lane in respect of Shred. Nothing unusual about that, other than this particular wreath was left by supporters of SWFC. I'm no different to many posters in that I indulge in a spot of banter regarding our S6 neighbours. With something as fundamental as the passing of a fan, any fan, it should remind anyone who loves the game of football that there are some things that put everything into perspective. Shred's death was a blow for many on here. I never knew the man, but the way in which he's been remembered reminded me that deep down we all share the same passions, the same hopes, and exactly the same capacity to let football get under our skin in a way that few other things in life are capable of.

Well done and thank you those supporters of SWFC for this gesture. At times like this local animosities seem trivial by comparison, whatever happens life always continues. I know the feelings that surround Shred's death will fade and we'll soon return to berating 'that lot' from Hillsborough. I suppose what this moment should remind us of is that we all share the same set of feelings, aspirations, and wishes as the rest of the world. Debate and banter are the lifeblood of local football rivalry, the world would be a far duller place without you or I embracing these types of exchanges. But there are a few things that rise above this sort of local rivalry, and Shred's passing should remind all of us that there are things that are important to us, and then there are things that genuinely matter, things that are the nuts and bolts of life itself. I hope that when a supporter of SWFC passes away, someone who was part of the fabric of that club in the way that Shred was a part of the fabric of our club, that we'll be capable of making the same type of gesture as those supporters of SWFC made about Shred.

Being perfectly honest, I'd never heard of Shred before he died, but I wish I had. I've never lived in Sheffield and most of my mates support other clubs, so the only away days I've been on have been since living in London.

What a man he seemed to be and what an effect he's had on the lives of all those who met him, and even some who haven't. It's the measure of someone that they made such an impression, but also had other people paying tribute to them among Blades scattered around the world.

It's not often you develop a lot of respect for a football fan you've never met, but this is certainly an exception. RIP old chap and we'll keep the flag flying high in your honour, as you did before and many will do after us.

I was talking to a guy at the lane today about how strange it will be not seeing him at the game any more (I sit about five rows behind him). All my time watching United I'd see him more surely than I'd seen nearly anyone else. Matt Bell is perhaps the only other person I saw so frequently whom I could put a name to.

The tributes were on Shred's seat again, I noticed. I wonder if anyone else will ever sit there?

Been out of action for a month so apologies for being late on this thread, but what a shocker this news was. Top man, top Blade and really sad news. Living abroad, and hardly ever having the opportunity to get back and watch a game, it'll certainly be strange not seeing Shred kicking about on a match day when I do actually make it.

RIP big lad, we won't see the likes of you again.

Hope all goes well tomorrow, thoughts with family and friends an blades.. RIP
