I know we'd all like footballers to be noble and make their decisions based purely on a love for the game. Unfortunately, money is a thing and I'm not sure how much I'd like the prospect of taking a big pay cut if I had a family at home to take care of. And I wouldn't judge anyone if they put those personal issues ahead of Sheffield United who offered him a contract of a certain length that he presumably accepted in good faith.

And, anticipating the responses, I have absolutely no idea if that's why he's hanging on. I don't know what injuries he's had or how bad they are. Maybe he's laughing every time he speaks to Wilder about how he's robbing him blind. All I know is that there are perfectly valid reasons that an individual might have for wanting to keep hold of a contract they're entitled to and I'm not going to judge an individual with the little info we have.

He didn't work out. He wasn't an expensive signing, especially relative to where the club now stands. We moved on too quickly for some of our squad and those still hanging around are something we just have to deal with in a professional manner.

I'm guessing but I'd have thought the club just choose not to post pictures of him, seeing as he's such a fringe player, never really did anything for us, and will 99% likely never feature for us again. The response on social media would just be people taking the piss, or - dare I say it - along the lines of the opening post of this thread. Much better to post pics of Fleck, Sharp, whoever (even Clarke who has unarguably had some great moments for us).

I don't follow the u23s too closely but (again, guessing) it seems like it would make more sense not to waste that playing time on someone who is 30+ and isn't going to play for us again, as opposed to a youngster or someone who needs the minutes for fitness. Similar for cup matches really, play Morrison / L Freeman etc instead of Holmes.

I doubt it. I'm pretty sure the medical staff will be all over it and wouldn't let him get away with anything underhand. Think it was a poor signing to be honest and not the lads fault that he's signed a great contract for himself or ended up injured.

No matter what anyone thinks or who's fault it is i bet it's not bad sitting on at least 5k a week

Carruthers was out of contract, so didn’t have a great deal of choice. Holmes is not

I remember we went ahead with signing John Ebbrell for £925K despite that insurance companies refusing to insure him. That was a big mistake.

I assume that the insurance is paying some (if not all) of Holmes wages when he is injured?

What people are failing to comprehend is that football is more than just entertainment or a hobby for professionals, it’s their livelihood. Of course, if he hasn’t got any options that work for him he’s going to stay if he’s getting a regular wage. No one on here can seriously suggest they would put their family life at risk if they were in a similar situation.

Anyone who’s angry at Holmes should probably be directing it at his agent anyway given that it’s them who negotiate the deals and put the feelers out to potential new clubs. Agents prioritise their own interests before they even think about their player, so I wouldn’t have thought they are too concerned about the club.

Sorry I might have missed it, but you feel sorry for the lad yet I haven't seen any evidence that he does want to play football. He could still play football if he wanted to. For example if he's on 18k and Charlton only wanted to pay 4k, I wouldn't imagine under the circumstances we wouldn't let that happen over paying his full wage.

Quite possibly. 'Back injuries' are subjective and are often down to the patient despite various tests that can be done. For example, i've had knee ops, and the MRI scan can say what's there or not, but not how much pain I might or might not be in.

I don't begrudge RH taking the shilling and seeing out his contract, but bearing in mind CWs comments previously (surely directed at RH), the contract he is on (best he will ever have), his moaning on twitter on the first day of summer training about having to leave his family behind, and his complete lack of presence at the club, I cant help but think he's probably had a fall out with CW and both parties are stubbornly sticking to their guns.

He doesn't get near to the squad and it seems that injury has curtailed any potential move. Ironically it might happen sooner than later as his contract is up this summer and he might want to beat the summer signing rush.

The lads injury will either clear up pretty quickly (conveniently once his contract runs out), or he will retire from the game once his contract runs out. We will soon see.

No ill feelings from me, it's just the way it goes sometime, but I'm not naive enough to think that footballers cant be like any other employees in that they can take the piss of it suits (not that I'm saying RH has done in this situation, as I just don't know either way).

He was loaned out to Oxford United for the season in August 2018 and to Gillingham in January 2019. If he'd just wanted to sit around at United 'stealing' a wage, why would he have agreed to that? Both loans ended early because he's crocked.
