I do think time stipulations can be negotiated also as with any move the player has to agree to sign the contract in your scenario I could imagine Brewster being absolutely furious

Anything over £20m they have to bin the buy back clause it's ridiculous.

It effectively becomes the most expensive loan signing in history if he's any good.

it’s the other way round

Say we buy him for 20m and sell him for 30 or 35 in 2 years time - effectively Liverpool have paid us 10m plus to develop him.

I always felt like that would have been the ideal scenario with hendo. We paid 20m for him this summer Man U could have him back in 2/3 years for 25-30m once de gea was out of the way If he kept developing. But I suspect the new mega contract meant that was unlikely.

Knowing us buy back will be £10m

Because if the lad genuinely fulfilled his potential & Liverpool wanted to bring him back in a couple of year's time and we stood to make even just £10-15m on it, you'd say fair enough. We'd have had 2 years of great output from the deal and he'd be moving on for a profit to the club of his dreams.

But I'd hate to be shithoused and for Liverpool to exercise the buyback, only to flog him the next day at a profit to Aston Villa after their latest wacky venture hasn't panned out too well for them...
I think this happened with Deulofeu. Barca exercised buy back clause from Everton for nominal fee only to sell him to Watford for a profit. I deal with quite a few contracts (not a lawyer) and you can pretty much agree anything as long as both sides, and sets of lawyers, agree. Let’s hope our lawyer hasn’t just graduated out of law school!

I'm sure they are all different but what is a buy back clause?
Do we set the fee? Can they buy him back mid contract? Do we have to sell? Do they just get first refusal?

#edit
If its true, and true about the Watkins price tag, then £20m would be a very good price.

Buuuuuut, if its a purchase rather than a loan, we are going to have the wages debate again.

Both teams would agree the fee I imagine as it needs to be high enough for it to be worth our time and cheap enough that Liverpool would be willing to pay it at the drop of a hat

Does a buy back happen at a drop of a hat? If he's our player surely we can't be made to sell him?

It’s basically a release clause is it not? If it’s met there’s little you can do?
Unless I’ve completely misjudged that

I think it's if we want to sell him the selling club get 1st refusal at an agreed price. What's the point otherwise? May as well just take him on loan for 2 years.
