Maybe the original plan was a season long loan, talks going well until Liverpool moved the goalposts and now want a fee so that they can bring in a player they want?

Sounds about right. We were keen on a loan. Then Liverpool decided that they’d be able to sell him to raise funds for their spending spree they’ve been on (Thiago, Jota..) given the interest from Villa, Palace and Brighton. We’re sat there with our loan bid while Liverpool are waiting and hoping for a proper bid to come in. The longer that goes on, the more likely it is that we’ll resolve some kind of deal with them. Not sure if that’ll be a buy or a loan, mind, but it seems like that’s where we’re at. Hence Liverpool leaking a story to our media yesterday of “look, you can have him for this amount”. Increases pressure on us, knowing Wilder is keen to get a deal done, while also alerting even more the likes of Palace and Villa.

£20m is a lot of spondoolies for a young lad with the game time he has. We as a club have to back CWAKs judgement if they think he is the one and we have the funds to do business.

Not seen too much of the lad myself, so I can't be too outraged if this one doesn't get done. I'd like it to get done though if CW wants him.

I'd be happy enough if we bought the Arsenal youngster and maybe 1 other with the same money instead. But maybe Brewster has more potential for the long term. Whatever the club decides, I just wish they would get on with doing the business. Each game that goes by without strengthening the forward line could cost us long term this season.

Whitby-Blade

I have a feeling I’m going to get a few of these. We were talking about Football Manager. I signed him and was jokingly (presumably) asked if he was any good. Not talking about real life.

Agreed but what PL ready strikers cost £20 these days? Blame Villa for shoving lower level player prices up cause the price of players above them have been pushed higher as well.

In that case you need to get your tactics sorted, should be bagging you 30 a season this lad, he’s the second coming don’t you know?

Some in here think Wilder is feeling our board have let him down rather than think Wilder is disappointed with Liverpool's change of stance

If it were a loan then fine. £20m is a big gamble on a young player who hasn't proved himself in the PL. The buy back clause makes this a poor deal in my opinion as it loads all the risk onto us with potential scant reward. If we have £20m to spend on a striker I think I'd look elsewhere.

What makes you think Brewster is PL ready?
Like Wilder says though, we have to gamble. The closest we could probably come to affording a PL ready striker is King, but by afford I only mean the £20m Bournemouth would be wanting, that doesn't take into account other clubs that would want him too.

The young Arsenal lad probably isn't ready either but we simply can't afford the wages of a 'proven' PL striker.

What makes you think Brewster is PL ready?
I mean as an alternative to Brewster if we don’t think he is worth £20m. As you say Brewster is not a PL striker so if he is being offered for £20m off the back of what Villa paid for Watkins what would an oven ready striker cost. £20m is the price of a a PL prospect these days, that’s the pond we are fishing in cause we can’t afford the proven players.

Rian Brt. Where’s

But our pond has plastic 🦆😀

Maybe the original plan was to have Brewster on loan and buy Balogun (whose contract expires next year and he is refusing to sign a new one)

I’m desperate we sign a striker. Not only increased goal threat but a big boost to rest of squad.

Without knowledge of our negotiations with Liverpool who do I back to look after our club’s interests? Bettis/Wilder or LFC? Yep. Let them get on with it and if it’s right for the club they’ll do it as demonstrated by several big money signings since promotion!

Villa think Watkins is worth £33M and it is their problem. Maybe Wilder was planning to sign Brewster on loan and buying Balogun?

I've seen him play in last season's playoffs. Took his goal quite nicely to lob the keeper but did little else of note.

We need a striker or two, I love Billy, best shape in his life and he’s officially a Lane Legend in my eyes but age is catching up with him, Didsy is great and works hard but the cold facts of last season is one goal, Burke looks quick but not played consistently well, Ollie looks in better shape but doesn’t bag that many and Moose is out, lots of strikers but not one where you think bet he scores today and that’s the big problem when we are leaking goals.

Hope we play hard ball better than last time with Liverpool, Coady went for half our bid to Huddersfield!

For 18 mill he's no more of a risk than mcburnie or ramsdale
Yeah but McBurnie was last seasons gamble, and Ramsdale this one.

How many £20m gambles can we make each year?

I don't think either were gambles to be honest, I'm just playing devils advocate.

£20m sounds like a good deal or even a bargain for such a sought after youngster but its not really
To labour the point, and I know it’s not what you’re saying with your post, but how can someone be considered sought after when no one has made a bid? If this deal is so good, why has no one else done it?
This whole saga is an oxymoron. He’s highly rated but no one wants to pay the apparently bargain price for player who’s signing will decide if we stay in this league. It’s all very odd.

Still think this is done and he’s a United player come the end of the window at which point the grumbles will be saying he should have been brought in weeks ago before turning on him when he doesn’t score 15 goals in his first 15 starts.

He’s currently in bed watching the Swansea match according to his Instagram. Wilder don’t bother signing him, still in bed at this time?! LAZY

Based on what? How many times have you seen him play?
I saw him play for Swansea a few times last season. He had half a season at Swansea where he looked just as good as Mcburnie and had similar stats. He is also a lot more mobile than Mcburnie and has a lot more technical ability.

Ramsdale and Mcburnie had one good season before we signed them, Brewster has had half a season. I am not sure why then Brewster is a massive risk and those other two weren't.
