If things go wrong tomorrow against Leeds I can see CW have a very public vent of his frustrations after the game, similar to the one he had at Northampton when it looked like the sale of the club was about to fall through.

If we leave the squad as is until January, or whenever the next one is, we'll be using that window to build a team that can get us promoted at the first attempt (and selling off top assets that we can get a premium for).

This kind of carry on is typical of owners at Sheffield United really thought we had learned our lesson and turned a corner but this transfer window proves yet again we have learned nothing.

The owner has at NO TIME made out he’s got the kind of funds to spend silly money. He’s been very open with the finances and what we are capable of.
For this club, the last year and a bit we have spent more on player transfer fees than we probably had in total up to that point over the history of the club!
Budgets have been agreed, made clear and the manager has to operate within those.
There’s been no hiding, no lies, just honesty.
so here’s some more honesty for everyone....
1. We are a victim of our own success to some degree. Player budgets haven’t been able to keep up with the rise in performance.
2. Our manager brought in 3 strikers for the start of last season. Whether they can be considered a success is open to debate. But total fees were around the £35m mark!!
3. Wilder highlighted the need for forwards improvement. He had his budget....but the largest chunk has gone on a keeper. On top of that we have strengthened full back areas. So have to question if Wilder saved sufficient for the strikers.

We've spent over 50 million in 2020 alone.

Spent around 8 million on 2 players who dont even make the bench
Are building a top notch training ground
Have upgraded several contracts including CW.
All without taking a penny from fans or selling any star players.
I want a striker in as much as anyone but the typical sheff united owners comment is 100% plain and simply wrong.

It’s not though.....in the past we showed virtually no ambition and we’ve often the lowest spenders.
You only need to go back 14 months...the doom mongerers confidently predicted the max we’d ever pay on a transfer was 10 million.
They harked back to the old days and confidently predicted we’d spent 20 million per season max.
Last week the Prince said we’d already spent 91 (ninety one) million on transfers.
It seems for some people...the more you receive...then the more you expect....it’s a vicious circle.
It takes bravery and business acumen...to resist letting you heart rule your head.
Being emotional taking risks in businesses often leads to failed businesses.
A significant factor is the current covid situation regards how it might effect income over the next 10 years.
What if the semi lockdown becomes permanent....as the politicians say ”the new norm”
What if capacity is (by law) reduced to 33% for every venue. So our gates are permanently restricted to 10,000.
Would this lead to lower advertising revenue? Will Sky drastically reduce their offer for the next tv deal?
Also let’s not forget that Brewster is only potential....he’s hardly played any 1st team football anywhere.
He’s learning his trade so not likely to do much this season...he’s probably a good investment for the future but not a player for the here and now.

Not heard from him since the demise of Crab Industries (almost nothing to do with the fire at head office). His parting words were he was off to help out the NHS. This had almost nothing to do with the subsequent upsurge in A&E admissions....

Shame about that - if t'interweb (&/or this site) had existed back then you'd have access to infinite financial advice , but hey ho better late than never:-
Don't worry about this years budget - you can spend as much as you want - as you can set a new budget next year

Not many posts make me change my mind, but this has made me reevaluate a bit.
I think the main frustration is that we seem close, its as though we are risking losing out because of £3-4m, but as you rightly point out, there are a lot more factors than what us fans usually take into consideration.

To be honest that sounds the most likely explanation.
None of us expected him to be for sale earlier on in this window to be fair, maybe the United staff didn't either.
£20m sounds like a good deal or even a bargain for such a sought after youngster but its not really if your entire transfer kitty hinged on him coming on loan for a £2m fee.
Maybe most of our budget was set aside for a Luke Freeman upgrade? Maybe it still is.

Maybe they want £20m with a buy back for £25m - so we risk £20m if he isn't PL material and if he is we lose him in a year for £25m I can see why they are reluctant. Or maybe its just very complicated. Staged payments, sell on clauses, buy back clauses and maybe the player wants a releaser clause. Buu back alone over a three year contract £25m next summer £30m the following etc etc through his contact

Aye but the lack of any ascertainable stampede in pursuit of your "good deal" / "bargain" suggests he may not be as " sought after" as you (& the press (sic) ) suggest - & certainly not on the terms Liverpool were/ are setting ( even with their (apparent) change in stance / generosity re 'terms')
