They do it in baseball. NY Yankees don't use number 5 as a tribute to Di Maggio.
Would it not be the right time to do this as a fitting tribute to a great servant for the Blades.

(Just as long as he doesn't go working for Leeds again).

No. Aside from anything else, baseball/basketball probably are more able to do this due to the large number of specific squad numbers they've used for years. We only started to do this from 92/93 I think. 1-11 are still for the most part seen as position-specific numbers. I think it would be a great shame not to have a number 10 lining up at all for United in the future.

Many younger ones will remember Deano as number 10

Let's retire number 10 in tribute to TC. Number 7 can be retired in tribute to Woody, and 4 in tribute to Bob Booker.

6 gets retired in tribute to Joe Shaw, and 5 in tribute to Morgan.

1 in tribute to Alan Kelly, 12 gets retired in tribute to Alan Quinn.

3 will be retired in tribute to Nudger Needham, and 2 in tribute to Rob Kozluk, for laughter's sake if nothing else.

9 can be retired due to the unsavoury connection to the last player to wear it, and 8 and 11 just so we get the full set in.

Start them from 13 in future. In fact, given the bad luck we've had lately, let's make them all wear 13 from now on.

Sorted. Next please.

No chance, he was the best player in the 70's that's all and only then when he felt like it. Just one of a line who thought the grass was greener up the M1 ........... none of them did much up there LOL

Shoreham, You forgot the best of the lopt. JIMMY HAGAN

I mentioned the best of the lopt, or even the lot. Joe Shaw. And I couldn't remember what squad number Jinny Hagan wore. Besides which, he swanned off to manage Benfica, so that rules him out.

Seems like everybody's in favour of this. Just need to pass the forms round now. ;)

You don't retire a number because you sack somebody. Usually they die. QPR did it with the young lad a couple of years ago. Man City did it for Marc Vivien-Foe (#23). You can't just stop giving players a shirt because a fat arrogant bloke who used to be a good player once wore it.

Higher squad numbers = more iron on transfer sales in the club shop. Watch out for the announcement.....

They didn't have squad numbers in Hagan's day. They wore the number according to what position they played in.

He mainly wore number 10 for the early part of his career, though in the 1950s he tended to wear number 8 (Harold Brook switched to inside left). He also wore 7 on a few occasions. The numbers didn't mean much, however, since Hagan could turn up almost anywhere to weave his magic. I recall seeing a Heap cartoon showing Hagan with a big question mark on his back.

theyve done the alternative ,kept the number 10 shirt and retired TC
Harsh reality is continuity as a div 1 member means income short falls , its purely a business decision, had we gone up , he,d have got a pay rise

I know. The first English match in which squad number were worn was Arsenal v Wendy in the 1993 League Cup,and then the full season from 93-94. Incidentally, Wendy v Arsenal and Chelsea v Swansea in 1928 were the first time shirt numbers were used in English football.

Joe Shaw and Woody didn't have squad numbers either. And does anyone remember when George Best died? There was a small effort to get Man Utd to retire number 7, as that was Best's number. They then showed a clip of him in action. Wearing number 11.

As far as I can remember, TC never had a squad number either, but maybe I am mistaken.;)

I would say that you are onto a winner here Kingy..................

Not for me, Currie was great for us of that there's no doubt but not worthy of such an accolade.

At the new Comiskey Park the Chicago White Sox have cartoon likenesses of their greatest players around the the perimeter of the pitch. It looks great and helps create the atmosphere.

I think something like that would be far more appropriate; our top all time 11 and a sub, maybe 3 attached to the roof of each stand looking down on the latest batch of masters of disaster.

Doing this would be almost as silly as, say, building a statue in the carpark of someone who never played for or managed us and whose family are all Wednesdayites.

Bit unfair. Dooley's connection with United was over 30 years - quite a bit longer than his connection with Wednesday.

I can't see what his family's allegiances have to do with anything.

OK. So take his family out of the equation.

He still never played for us or managed us.
If I had a list of say 200 Blades related names and was asked to rate them as worthy of a statue he'd probably be somewhere between Ray Lewington and Monty.

I think its the 34 year connection that swings it. You would probably have to go back to George Waller pre WWII for someone connected with the club for a longer period.

Me? I would ditch the statue idea entirely. Its all a bit Stalinist/Socialist Realist for me, but everyone seems to do it these days....

Best idea of the lot, for me. They could commission Foxy to do the characters based on the forum background. Have a fan's vote for the players included.
