No. Aside from anything else, baseball/basketball probably are more able to do this due to the large number of specific squad numbers they've used for years. We only started to do this from 92/93 I think. 1-11 are still for the most part seen as position-specific numbers. I think it would be a great shame not to have a number 10 lining up at all for United in the future.

You don't retire a number because you sack somebody. Usually they die. QPR did it with the young lad a couple of years ago. Man City did it for Marc Vivien-Foe (#23). You can't just stop giving players a shirt because a fat arrogant bloke who used to be a good player once wore it.

They didn't have squad numbers in Hagan's day. They wore the number according to what position they played in.

He mainly wore number 10 for the early part of his career, though in the 1950s he tended to wear number 8 (Harold Brook switched to inside left). He also wore 7 on a few occasions. The numbers didn't mean much, however, since Hagan could turn up almost anywhere to weave his magic. I recall seeing a Heap cartoon showing Hagan with a big question mark on his back.

I know. The first English match in which squad number were worn was Arsenal v Wendy in the 1993 League Cup,and then the full season from 93-94. Incidentally, Wendy v Arsenal and Chelsea v Swansea in 1928 were the first time shirt numbers were used in English football.

Joe Shaw and Woody didn't have squad numbers either. And does anyone remember when George Best died? There was a small effort to get Man Utd to retire number 7, as that was Best's number. They then showed a clip of him in action. Wearing number 11.

As far as I can remember, TC never had a squad number either, but maybe I am mistaken.

At the new Comiskey Park the Chicago White Sox have cartoon likenesses of their greatest players around the the perimeter of the pitch. It looks great and helps create the atmosphere.

I think something like that would be far more appropriate; our top all time 11 and a sub, maybe 3 attached to the roof of each stand looking down on the latest batch of masters of disaster.

I think its the 34 year connection that swings it. You would probably have to go back to George Waller pre WWII for someone connected with the club for a longer period.
