We need fewer small midfielders. Wilder signed another small unathletic midfielder in Rothwell recently.
We can now field 5 or 6 central midfielders who aren’t tall or strong or mobile.
Modern football requires the opposite. It’s frustrating that we keep doing it.

That will be the 6.1ft Joe Rothwell...?

Phillips, Soumaré, Riedewald...? I'd argue Rothwell and Peck aren't small or unathletic either.

Really? Ndiaye, RND, Osula and jebbison in seasons before breaking through and playing at least 19 games. That's with promotions and premier league money. It's pretty well known? Plenty of young loans too where premier league sides trust us with young players.
Which manger did they break through under?

Interesting how Gibbs-White & McAtee’s careers progressed compared to say, Raj-Sakyi.

Current manager is dismal at developing youth. They either make the grade or he bins them off.

Alternatively shagging one of his daughters is a proven route to the first team.

So literally the same as every other manager then. What are the other options to the above?

I’m far from being a Wilder fan, but he has transitioned Brooks, Seriki, Peck and Arblaster into the first team really well. Credit where it’s due.

Phillips is an experienced professional on loan from the most successful English side over the past 10 years. He's not going to be here next season.

Soumaré is athletic, I'll give you that, but he's technically lacking and far too loose in possession. I don't doubt that he'll have a decent career but probably in a slower league where he's under less pressure.

Riedewald has looked a step above since he joined and is rightly first choice when fit. Our results with and without him are stark (first two matches as he got up to speed were defeats at Preston and Coventry).

Rothwell is slow and unathletic. He might be fairly tall (6'1") but that doesn't mean much if he can't get about the pitch

Peck turns like milk, particularly in possession. He's got a decent engine on him but he's not athletic in the sense of speed over 10 yards or changes in direction.

Arblaster was more athletic pre-ACL but he's clearly still working his way back to fitness and will probably be seen almost exclusively as a sub from here on in.

Two of those reached the first team through that third way.

The other was only in the team following a veto of signing Dozell and injuries. Ditto with Seriki, he’s signed half a dozen right backs and wingers rather than play Brooks or Seriki and has resorted numerous times to playing other players out of position rather than develop youth players.

They are doing well despite wilder, rather than because of him, and it’s no shock this has come at the time they’re both looking for a new contract elsewhere.

Jebbison, Osula, Marsh, Buyabu, Sausnakas, Zatterstrom, Curtis are all having their careers mismanaged, added to Gordon, Amissah, Slater, Smith etc… the evidence is pretty damning. We have a great youth set up but a horrific pathway to getting them into the first team unless they can make the grade immediately.

Wilder derangement syndrome is so fascinating.

Not every player on the fringes of the first team via the academy is going to be good enough.

Success on the pitch is more important than giving players not good enough minutes and should ALWAYS be the aim.

Is there a parallel reality in which we handed Slater and Whiteman 100 first team appearances in order to make them the players they are today?

If there is, that reality would be unlikely to have seen two promotions to the PL.

They'd be accusing the management/club of bladey bladeness in that situation too
