I thought that, as is often the case, the ref was abysmal all through the game. The missing of two bookable fouls by that twat Little, then the way he neshed out of a 2nd yellow very late on for Little, as he would need to send him off, got me thinking. Is this ref this season, reluctant to send a man off?
I read yesterday he dismissed about 15 players last season, booking 3.2 per match or something. Maybe hes been told to cut down on the cards. I thought he was totally devoid of control over the game and his inability to stop endless serious fouls by Little, encouraged that twat to keep going as he knew he`d get away with it.

He should have carded Little for the first bad challenge on Harris and then gone off for the one he got booked for.

The third was actually the other similar looking player in Bristol's team. He actually went for his cards and then put them back in his pocket when he thought it was Little because he would have had to send him off.

Also, he should have booked their player for diving like he did Davies. He let the game carry on because we came away with possession (which was actually good referring) but then failed to show the yellow once the ball went out of play.

These are just a few of the points that really aggravated me today but there were numerous errors IMO.

I agree it was a very poor showing from him today.

Don't worry about the ref. He is doing his best.
However the United team ............

I've never known such a contradiction between people watching on TV and those at the ground, we got plenty of comments on Twitter from people saying he'd had a blinder and that we were wrong.

He was woefully inconsistent.

I'm not even going to begin to go into the cards he neshed.

He and his linesman allowed a foul throw, which bounced before it had entered play.

He's the only ref I've ever seen book a player while play continued - At the time, most around us thought he'd booked the Bristol man for a challenge on Murphy, he hadn't, he'd booked Murphy for simulation and allowed them to continue with play while he was still doing it.

The lino on south stand side actually missed the ball going well out of play in first minute or so, whilst it was airborne. All day long he was a total waste of space.

I think they just took their Free Kick quickly and Flynn intercepted it. More annoying than the ref's performance for me was the fact that we had two players rightly booked for diving. Poor form, United.

Edit: As Zablade said

In real time, from half way John Street, I never saw the ball stop. Even had it stopped at some point during them continuing, it would have been nowhere near the actual offence and he was holding up Murphy still booking him. Will watch it back, but it looked very much to me like they just played on.

Agree with you on the diving, Murphy did have his legs taken, but he carried on a few steps before going down.

You could be right, it certainly happened very quickly. Flynn wasn't 10 yards away either so if he did give the Free Kick it should have been retaken.

Did Murphy dive though or was it shit refereeing? The latter for me

Just watched the Murphy incident back, Sky had Smith down as being booked for it and said it was a foul.

You can't see anything other than their man kick the ball forward as it zooms in on Smith.

I'm still 90% certain they just shifted the ball around and played on before Flynn got the ball and put out for a throw.

Did Little actually elbow Harris in the first half? I missed it from where I was sitting on the kop. Just wondered if any replays were shown on sky

He was woefully poor.
How Murphy and Davies could go in the book for simulation when both Freeman and Wilbraham avoided cards for chucking themselves to the floor was crazy. Davies did actually look like a foul from my angle but without the courtesy of video replay I couldn't say it was a dive.
Little should've been off for the elbow. His reaction said it all to me. After the referee allowed play to go and finally brought it back (only due to 4th official.) Little moved away from the ball and swerved completely away from any United player as he ran up to Cotterill. Our players were too busy being peed off at the complete utter toss pot of a linesman that failed to show any balls and put his flag up for a foul to notice Little anyway.
The referee set the precident from the start when Scougall (possibly Reed) was shoved to the floor early on but didn't get a foul and then he pulled play back for a soft nudge on a Bristol player. The linesman too with the ball going well over the line but allowing Bristol to carry on playing. Both Harris and Davies had words with him before Garner did too. (This may've not helped us in long run)

I'm sorry to say but Bristol were a disgrace. I can't abide the tactics they used to con the ref and his officials. Time wasting from the start, (sending a man to distract ref by chatting to him) constant shoving and pulling at players, it was all worked and really shows the dross side of the English game. The time wasting got to Clough later and he shouted to ref and the response he got back looked like something on the lines of 'What can I do about it?' And shrugged his shoulders. I think he did a dam good job of helping Bristol kill any momentum we had and needless to say our players allowed things to bother them too much.

This happens time and time again and refs appear oblivious to it. My favourite example today was seconds after added time had been announced - One of their midfielders wandered up to ask him how long left, he obliged, showed him his watch and then had a lovely little chat.

He didn't. He had his elbow sticking out and Harris ended up careering into it, causing the injury. Certainly no intent and certainly no dangerous play either.

Cheers for clearing that up pal. We're all blades aren't we. UTB & FTP

If thats the standard of refereeing you regulars have been use to I am surprised some of you have not been done for abusing referees. it was my first time and it was an appalling refereeing performance and I include the linesman in that, the elbow on Harris was 5 yards from the linesman

Books players for diving but not acts of violence

The Bristol right back was a 'little' lucky to stay on the pitch by the end.
He left the game a 'freeman'
Alright I'll grab my coat
But in all seriousness the ref was dreadful

The ref was abysmal only surpassed by the South Stand Lino. He needs to consider packing it in. As bad as you'll see.

I was Row V south stand and I could hear the smack from there but yet the linesman (but 5 feet away) saw nothing. He purposely went for Harris. If it doesn't look like that on the replay I'll be shocked. Looked a straight red from where I was sat, then got a booking in the second half for a rash challenge and then the Referee refused to book him for diving, even though a few minutes prior Davies had been booked for the same thing. Little was a fouling shit from the first whistle.

The entire reason Bristol got away with it all..heavy fouling, niggling, whining..was that they are strongarm league one cloggers with a few decent players thrown in. They knew the ref was a tosspot and they, being a real cynical side, took advantage. It was all gamesmanship. Nothing honest at all. The pussy of a ref was willing to be manipulated and as our players are largely either weak in body, in will, or naive, Bristol managed to boss the ref. He utterly failed to control the match from the off. He did spot our 2 dives..but he missed 2 handballs by United players. What a tit.

I can't remember the handballs? I remember Little or possibly Baldcock handballing it early on which was actually what Garner got on at linesman for. There was just too much inconsistency on the whole, he seemed to give both teams some soft fouls but left the heavier tackles. I haven't had the chance to watch the game back (don't have sky sports) be interesting to see both he and the linesman preformance again. Bristol have some decent players but I just can't stand those type of tactics. (That would be same if we employed similar tactics too.)

That`s part of the problem. We don`t use tactics. We have a vague mishmash of ideas masquerading as plan A but when that gets sussed we are hopeless.

I may have been imagining things but I am sure Don Goodman said that the player deserved to get booked for a "cynical" foul on Murphy (even after the replay) and then once it was clear that Murphy had been booked that it was a "Brilliant decision" by the ref.

No, you're right he said that. He was also spunking in his pants with the commentator when Bristol C were lining up holding hands before we scored they both made out that it was amazing stating things like - look at them making sure the space is just right.... As Higdon glanced the header in goodman said "that's why I don't like zonal defending"

I thought the ref had a decent game too. He booked our two rightly for trying to con him. No need for diving, if I was Clough I'd ban them both for a game and let them work their way back into the side.

The elbow didn't look intentional, but when a home player goes down holding his face it must immediately mean that it was an intentional elbow. If it wasn't for that incident we wouldn't have heard the Blades fans at all!
